By that, we can obtan these specal numbers n a new and drect way. Moreover, some connectons between Horadam and generalzed Lucas numbers are revealed to get a more strong result. Keywords: Horadam numbers, generalzed Lucas numbers, bnomal sums Ams Classfcaton: 11B39, 11B65 1 Introducton For a,b, p,q Z, Horadam [12] consdered the sequence W n (a,b ; p,q, shortly W n, whch was defned by the recursve equaton W n (a,b ; p,q = pw +qw n 2 (n 2, (1 where ntal condtons are W 0 = a, W 1 = b and n N. In Equaton (1, for specal choces of a, b, p and q, the followng recurrence relatons can be obtaned. For a = 0, b = 1, t s obtaned generalzed Fbonacc numbers: U n = pu +qu n 2. (2 For a = 2, b = p, t s obtaned generalzed Lucas numbers: V n = pv +qv n 2. (3 e-mal: nzylmaz@selcuk.edu.tr and ntaskara@selcuk.edu.tr 1
For a = 0, b = 1, p = 1, q = 1, t s obtaned classcal Fbonacc numbers: F n = F +F n 2. For a = 2, b = 1, p = 1, q = 1, t s obtaned classcal Lucas numbers: L n = L +L n 2. For a = 0, b = 1, p = 2, q = 1, t s obtaned Pell numbers: P n = 2P +P n 2. For a = 2, b = 2, p = 2, q = 1, t s obtaned Pell-Lucas numbers: Q n = 2Q +Q n 2. For a = 0, b = 1, p = 1, q = 2, t s obtaned Jacobsthal numbers: J n = J +2J n 2. For a = 2, b = 1, p = 1, q = 2, t s obtaned Jacobsthal-Lucas numbers: n = +2 n 2. Consderng [12] (or [6], one can clearly obtan the characterstc equaton of (1 as the form t 2 pt q = 0 wth the roots Hence the Bnet formula α = p+ p 2 +4q 2 and β = p p 2 +4q. (4 2 W n = W n (a,b ; p,q = Aα n +Bβ n, (5 where A = b aβ α β, B = aα b α β, can be thought as a soluton of the recursve equaton n (1. The number sequences have been nterested by the researchers for a long tme. Recently, there have been so many studes n the lterature that concern about subsequences of Horadam numbers such as Fbonacc, Lucas, Pell and Jacobsthal numbers. They were wdely used n many research areas as Physcs, Engneerng, Archtecture, Nature and Art (see [1-15]. For example, n [7], Taskara et al. examned the propertes of Lucas numbers wth bnomal coeffcents. In [10], they also computed the sums of products of the terms of the Lucas sequence {V kn }. In addton n [11], the authors establshed denttes nvolvng sums of products of bnomal coeffcents. And, n [16], we obtaned Horadam numbers wth postve and negatve ndces by usng determnants of some specal trdagonal matrces. 2 Man Results Let us frst consder the followng lemma whch wll be needed later n ths secton. In fact, ths lemma enables us to construct a relaton between Horadam numbers and generalzed Lucas numbers by usng ther subscrpts. Lemma 1 [10]For n 1, we have W n+ = V W n ( q W n. (6 Theorem 2 For n 2, the followng equaltes are hold: W n+ = V W 2 ( q V W. Proof. Let us show ths by nducton, for n = 2, we can wrte W 3 = V W 2 ( q W, whch concdes wth equaton (6. Now, assume that, t s true for all postve ntegers m,.e. m 1 W m+ = V m 1 W 2 ( q V m 1 W. (7 Then, we need to show that above equalty holds for n = m+1, that s, W (m+1+1 = V m W 2 ( q m V m W. (8 By consderng the rght hand sde of Equaton (8, we can expand the summaton as V m W 2 ( q m m 1 V m W = V m W 2 ( q V m W ( q W m = V Then, usng Equaton (7, we have V m W 2 ( q m Fnally, by consderng (6, we obtan V m W 2 ( q V m 1 W 2 ( q m 1 V m 1 V m W = V W m+ ( q W m m V m W = W (m+1+ W ( q W m. 3
whch ends up the nducton. Choosng some sutable values on a, b, p and q, one can also obtan the sums of the well known Fbonacc, Lucas, Pell, Jacobsthal numbers, etc. n terms of the sum n Theorem 2. Corollary 3 In Theorem 2, for specal choces of a, b, p and q, the followng result can be obtaned for well-known number sequences n lterature. For a = 0, b = 1, t s obtaned generalzed Fbonacc numbers: U n+ = V U 2 ( q V U. For a = 2, b = p, t s obtaned generalzed Lucas numbers: V n+ = V V 2 ( q V V. For a = 0, b = 1, p = 1, q = 1, t s obtaned classcal Fbonacc numbers: F n+ = L F 2 ( 1 L F. For a = 2, b = 1, p = 1, q = 1, t s obtaned classcal Lucas numbers: L n+ = L L 2 ( 1 L L. For a = 0, b = 1, p = 2, q = 1, t s obtaned Pell numbers: P n+ = Q P 2 ( 1 Q P. For a = 2, b = 2, p = 2, q = 1, t s obtaned Pell-Lucas numbers: Q n+ = Q Q 2 ( 1 Q Q. For a = 0, b = 1, p = 1, q = 2, t s obtaned Jacobsthal numbers: J n+ = J 2 ( 2 J. 4
For a = 2, b = 1, p = 1, q = 2, t s obtaned Jacobsthal-Lucas numbers: n+ = 2 ( 2. By choosng other sutable values on a, b, p and q, almost all other specal numbers can also be obtaned n terms of the sum n Theorem 2. Now, we wll show the relaton between Horadam numbers and generalzed Lucas numbers usng bnomal sums as follows. Theorem 4 For n 2, the followng equaltes are satsfed: W n+ = n 2 n 2 ( n ( n V n 2 ( 1 V n 2 q W +q a q W q a ( n 1 V n 2 1 q, s odd ( n 1 ( 1 V n 2 1 q, s even. Proof. There are two cases of subscrpt. Case 1: Let be s odd. Then, by Theorem 2, we can wrte W n+ = V W 2 +q V W = V W 2 +q V n 2 W +q V n 3 W 2 + +q W (. We must note that the proof should be nvestgated for both cases of n. If n s odd, then we have W n+ = V n 2 ( V W 2 +q W +q V n 4 (V W 2 +W 3 (9 + +q ( V V W (n 3 +W (n 2 +q W (. Hence, t s gven the bnomal summaton, when the recursve substtutons equaton (9 by usng (6, W n+ = 2 ( n 2 ( V n 2 n 1 q W +q a V n 2 1 q. (10 If n s even, then smlar approach can be appled to obtan W n+ = V n 2 ( V W 2 +q W +q V n 4 (V W 2 +W 3 + +q V 0 ( V W (n 2 +W (. 5
and W n+ = n n 2 2 ( n 2 ( n 1 V n 2 q W +q a V n 2 1 q. (11 For the fnal step, we combne (10 and (11 to see the equalty n 2 ( n W n+ = V n 2 q W +q a ( n 1 as requred. Now, for the next case, consder Case 2: Let be s even. Then, by Theorem 2, we know V n 2 1 q, W n+ = V W 2 q V W = V W 2 q V n 2 W q V n 3 W 2 q W (. and therefore, we wrte W n+ = 2 ( n ( 1 V n 2 q W q a f n s odd. And we get W n+ = n 2 ( n ( 1 V n 2 q W q a 2 ( n 1 n 2 2 ( n 1 f n s even. Thus, by combnng (12 and (13, we obtan n 2 ( n W n+ = ( 1 V n 2 q W q a ( n 1 ( 1 V n 2 1 q (12 ( 1 V n 2 1 q (13 ( 1 V n 2 1 q. Hence the result follows. Choosng some sutable values on, a, b, p and q, one can also obtan the bnomal sums of the well known Fbonacc, Lucas, Pell, Jacobsthal numbers, etc. n terms of bnomal sums n Theorem 4. Corollary 5 In Theorem 4, for specal choces of, a, b, p, q, the followng result can be obtaned. For = 1, 6

By choosng other sutable values on, a, b, p and q, almost all other specal numbers can also be obtaned n terms of the bnomal sum n Theorem 4. 7
