Recommendations /Plans 1. Maintain and Update the Data((Set Up A Country Committee & Website); 2. Enhance the Data-Sharing and Public Awareness; 3. Strengthen the Application at Conservation Activities; 4. More investigation; 5. Collaboration at Regional Levels. 1 st ABCDNet Workshop, March 7, 2013, Zhaoqing, Guangdong,China 3

China Red List of Higher Plants (Ministry of Environmental Protection, MEP, 2008-2012) Group Work: Initiated by IBCAS, 295 experts participated; Time Scale: 2008-2012; Methodology: IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria: Version 3.1 (IUCN 2001) and the Guidelines for Application of IUCN Red List Criteria at Regional Levels ( IUCN 2003 ) Outputs: Red of Whole Flora, Analysis, Recommendation

5 Total Number of China Higher Plant Taxa Listed in the Various Red List Categories

Process of Conducting the Assessment 1.Set up basic checklist + related data : Names: Catologue of Life China(Sp2k) Specimens: China Virtual Herbarium(CVH) literatures:(bhl-china) 2. Data Inputed by experts; 3. Assessment made by the team and evaluated by experts. 6

Result of the Assessment 1.Red Listing of 35610 taxa; 2.Description of 3767 Threatened taxa; 3. Analysis on the Result. 7

12 Threats status by altitude, provinces and counties

Signification of the Completion of China Red Listing As the first Red List that includes quantitative analyses of the threats impacting China plants, our analyses were done at national, biome and provincial levels; and allow conservation authorities to identify the main causes of loss to plant diversity within their regions. 中国植物受威胁比例 11%, 值得关注和保护的占 28% China has become one of the few countries to meet Target 2, an assessment of the conservation status of all known plant species, to guide conservation action. No. of taxa & threatened of mega counties

Scope of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation(GSPC) Understanding and documenting plant diversity Conserving plant diversity Using plant diversity sustainably Promoting education and awareness about plant diversity Capacity building to address plant diversity Target 2, an assessment of the conservation status of all known plant species, to guide conservation action.

Recommendation 1: Gap Analysis The threatened spp can be used to conduct the conservation gap analysis of threatened species to ensure that they have been actively conserved both in situ and ex situ. Red List of China plants can be used to identify: 1)the geographic priority areas for biodiversity conservation; 2)Target species for conservation in botanical gardens and in seed banks.

Recommendation 2:Establish a Updating & Monitoring System To record and monitor the threatened species. The current assessment text can be the basis of the system, and to which botanists and amateurs can send their information, to include in updates. online This will ensure that the plant Red List from now on remains up to date, and accurately reflects the current status. Criteria used in the assessment More long term monitor

Recommendation 3:Strengthen Field Inventory and Taxonomic Researches This assessment has identified the taxa most in need of detailed inventory along with experts to develop new research projects and integrate these data to fully assess the threatened status of DD species: DD-P(Data Deficient Insufficient Population Data) :3612 SPP. DD-T(Data Deficient Taxonomically Uncertain ): 1160SPP. 111, 3.6% Top 15 poorly know families(dd)
