BME 205 L09 SINUSOIDS AND PHASORS

Introduc2on We have so far only looked at DC circuits circuits excited by constant or 2me- invariant sources. We now begin the analysis of circuits in which the source voltage or current is 2me- varying. We re par2cularly interested in sinusoidally 2me- varying excita2on, or simply, excita2on by a sinusoid a signal that has the form of a sine or cosine. A sinusoidal current is usually referred to as alterna-ng current (ac). Such a current reverses at regular 2me intervals and has alternately posi2ve and nega2ve values. Circuits driven by sinusoidal current or voltage sources are called ac circuits. Sinusoids are ubiquitous in nature, e.g. pendulum, string vibra2on, ocean waves. A sinusoidal signal is easy to generate and transmit. It is the form of voltage generated throughout the world and supplied to homes, factories, laboratories, and so on. It is the dominant form of signal in the communica2ons and electric power industries. Sinusoids are easy to handle mathema2cally. Integrals and deriva2ves are themselves sinusoids, and they are the basis of Fourier analysis.

Sinusoids We will ignore any natural responses in this lecture and assume all circuits are in sinusoidal steady state. Consider the sinusoidal voltage where shown below as a func2on of its argument (a) and as a func2on of 2me (b) (a) It is evident that the sinusoid repeats itself every T seconds; thus, T is called the period of the sinusoid: (b)

This periodic repe22on is shown by replacing t by t+t in our voltage equa2on: Hence that is, v has the same value at t + T as it does at t and v(t) is said to be periodic. In general, a periodic func2on is one that sa2sfies f (t) = f (t + nt), for all t and for all integers n. The reciprocal of the period is the number of cycles per second, known as the cyclic frequency f of the sinusoid. Thus, Clearly, While ω is in radians per second (rad/s), f is in hertz (Hz).

Let us now consider a more general expression for the sinusoid, where (ωt + φ) is the argument and φ is the phase. Both argument and phase can be in radians or degrees. Let us examine the two sinusoids shown below. The star2ng point of v 2 occurs first in 2me. Therefore, we say that v 2 leads v 1 by φ or that v 1 lags v 2 by φ. If φ 0, we also say that v 1 and v 2 are out of phase. If φ = 0, then v 1 and v 2 are said to be in phase; they reach their minima and maxima at exactly the same 2me. We can compare v 1 and v 2 in this manner because they operate at the same frequency.

A sinusoid can be expressed in either sine or cosine form. When comparing two sinusoids, it is expedient to express both as either sine or cosine with posi2ve amplitudes. This is achieved by using the following trigonometric iden22es: from which it is easy to show that Using these rela2onships, we can transform a sinusoid from sine form to cosine form or vice versa. Note: It s not strictly necessary to do sine- cosine conversions when adding, say, Acos ωt and B sin ωt. We can instead form a triangle with the sine and cosine as orthogonal sides, and obtain the magnitude and argument of the resultant sinusoid in cosine form using: where

Example Calculate the phase angle between v 1 = 10 cos(ωt + 50 ) and v 2 = 12 sin(ωt 10 ). State which sinusoid is leading. Solu/on: Let us calculate the phase in two ways. Method 1 In order to compare v 1 and v 2,we must express them in the same form. If we express them in cosine form with posi2ve amplitudes, and It can be deduced that the phase difference between v 1 and v 2 is 30. We can write v 2 as Comparing equa2ons shows clearly that v 2 leads v 1 by 30.

Phasors Sinusoids are easily expressed in terms of phasors, which are more convenient to work with than sine and cosine func2ons. A phasor is a complex number that represents the amplitude and phase of a sinusoid. Phasors provide a simple means of analyzing linear circuits excited by sinusoidal sources; solu2ons of such circuits would be intractable otherwise. Before we completely define phasors and apply them to circuit analysis, we need to be thoroughly familiar with complex numbers. A complex number z can be wricen in rectangular form as where x is the real part of z; y is the imaginary part of z. In this context, the variables x and y do not represent a loca2on as in two- dimensional vector analysis but rather the real and imaginary parts of z in the complex plane. Nevertheless, we note that there are some resemblances between manipula2ng complex numbers and manipula2ng two- dimensional vectors.

The complex number z can also be wricen in polar or exponen2al form as where r is the magnitude of z, and φ is the phase of z. We no2ce that z can be represented in three ways: The rela2onship between the rectangular form and the polar form is shown in the figure, where the x axis represents the real part and the y axis represents the imaginary part of a complex number. Note that from the reciprocal opera2on, These are the basic proper2es of complex numbers we need. Other proper2es of complex numbers can be found in Appendix B. The idea of phasor representa2on is based on Euler s iden2ty. In general, which shows that we may regard cos φ and sin φ as the real and imaginary parts of e jφ ; we may write where Re and Im stand for the real part of and the imaginary part of. Given a sinusoid v(t) = V m cos(ωt + φ), we can thus express v(t) as (9.1a) (9.1b) or Thus where (9.2)

V is thus the phasor representa-on of the sinusoid v(t), as we said earlier. In other words, a phasor is a complex representa2on of the magnitude and phase of a sinusoid. Either Eq. (9.1a) or Eq. (9.1b) can be used to develop the phasor, but the standard conven2on is to use 9.1a. One way of looking at the phasor representa2on is to consider the plot of Ve jωt = V m e j (ωt+φ) on the complex plane (turned on its side in a). As 2me increases, it rotates on a circle of radius V m at an angular velocity ω in the counterclockwise direc2on. v(t) = V m cos(ωt + φ) is simply the projec2on of Ve jωt on the Real axis, shown in (b). The value of Ve jωt at 2me t = 0 is the phasor V of the sinusoid v(t). Whenever a sinusoid is expressed as a phasor, the term e jωt is implicitly present. It is therefore important, when dealing with phasors, to keep in mind the frequency ω of the phasor; otherwise we can make serious mistakes. Equa2on (9.2) states that to obtain the sinusoid corresponding to a given phasor V, mul2ply the phasor by the 2me factor e jωt and take the real part. (we take Re to give a cosine by conven2on; we could just as well take the Im part to make a sine func2on as above). As a complex quan2ty, a phasor may be expressed in rectangular form, polar form, or exponen2al form. Since a phasor has magnitude and phase ( direc2on ), it behaves as a vector and is printed in boldface.

For example, phasors can be graphically represented in a phasor diagram:

It s clear from our equa2ons that to get the phasor corresponding to a sinusoid, we first express the sinusoid in the cosine form so that the sinusoid can be wricen as the real part of a complex number. Then we take out the 2me factor e jωt, and whatever is lek is the phasor corresponding to the sinusoid. By suppressing the 2me factor, we transform the sinusoid from the 2me domain to the phasor domain. This transforma2on is summarized as follows: (9.3) The Table below also considers the sine func2on:

So to get the phasor representa2on of a sinusoid, we express it in cosine form and take the magnitude and phase. Given a phasor, we obtain the 2me- domain representa2on as the cosine func2on with the same magnitude as the phasor and the argument as ωt plus the phase of the phasor. The idea of expressing informa2on in alternate domains is fundamental to all areas of engineering. Note that in Eq. (9.3) the frequency (or 2me) factor e jωt doesn t appear, and the frequency is not explicitly shown in the phasor- domain representa2on because ω is constant. However, the response depends on ω. For this reason, the phasor domain is also known as the frequency domain. Similarly, the integral of v(t) is transformed to the phasor domain as V/jω 2me domain phasor domain v V So, we can replace a deriva2ve with respect to 2me with mul2plica2on of jω in the phasor domain, and replace an integral with respect to 2me with division by jω in the phasor domain. These equa2ons are useful in finding the steady- state solu2on, which does not require knowing the ini2al values of the variable involved. This is one of the important applica2ons of phasors. Besides 2me differen2a2on and integra2on, another important use of phasors is found in summing sinusoids of the same frequency. This is best illustrated in the example on next slide. The differences between v(t) and V should be emphasized: 1. v(t) is the instantaneous or -me- domain representa2on, while V is the frequency or phasor- domain representa2on. 2. v(t) is 2me dependent, while V is not. 3. v(t) is always real with no complex term, while V is generally complex. Finally, we should bear in mind that phasor analysis applies only when frequency is constant; it applies in manipula2ng two or more sinusoidal signals only if they are of the same frequency. vdt V jω

Phasor rela2onships for circuit elements Now we know how to represent a voltage or current in the phasor or frequency domain. How do we apply this to circuits involving the passive elements R, L, and C? We transform the voltage- current rela2onship from the 2me domain to the frequency domain for each element. Again, we will assume the passive sign conven2on. We begin with the resistor. If the current through a resistor R is i = I m cos(ωt + φ), the voltage across it is given by Ohm s law as showing that the voltage- current rela2on for the resistor in the phasor domain con2nues to be Ohm s law, as in the 2me domain.

So the voltage- current rela2on in the phasor domain is no different than in the 2me domain: It s clear from the phasor version of Ohm s law that voltage and current are in phase:

For the inductor L, assume the current through it is i = I m cos(ωt + φ). The voltage and current are 90 out of phase. Specifically, the current lags the voltage by 90. The phasor diagram is shown on the right.

The impedance represents the opposi/on which the circuit exhibits to the flow of sinusoidal current. Although the impedance is the ra/o of two phasors, it is not a phasor, because it does not correspond to a sinusoidally varying quan/ty. It s easy to write the impedance of R, L and C: R L C No2ce that when ω = 0 (i.e., for dc sources), Z L = 0 and Z C, confirming what we already know that the inductor acts like a short circuit, while the capacitor acts like an open circuit. When ω (i.e., for high frequencies), Z L and Z C = 0, indica2ng that the inductor is an open circuit to high frequencies, while the capacitor is a short circuit. This is illustrated below.

As a complex quan2ty, the impedance may be expressed in rectangular form as where R = Re Z is the resistance and X = Im Z is the reactance. The reactance X may be posi2ve or nega2ve. We say that the impedance is induc2ve when X is posi2ve or capaci2ve when X is nega2ve. Thus, impedance Z = R + jx is said to be induc-ve or lagging when X>0 since current lags voltage, whereas it is capaci2ve or leading when X<0 because current leads voltage. The impedance, resistance, and reactance are all measured in ohms. The impedance may also be expressed in polar form as From this equa2on and the last we infer that where and

The admicance Y (measured in siemens S) of an element (or a circuit) is the ra2o of the phasor current through it to the phasor voltage across it, or The admicances of resistors, inductors, and capacitors can be obtained in a similar way to impedance: R L C As a complex quan2ty, we may write Y as where G =Re Y is the conductance and B = Im Y is called the susceptance.
