We nvestgate the role of thermal nstablty, arsng from raatve coolng of an optcally thn, usty plasma, by lnear stablty analyss. The corresponng sobarc stablty conton for conensaton moe s foun to be mofe sgnfcantly by the egree of onzaton an concentraton of fnte sze, relatvely heavy, an negatvely charge ust partcles. It has been shown that though the funamental wave moe s smlar n nature to the one n absence of ust partcles, a new ust-wave moe can propagate n such a plasma. It s conjecture that the presence of negatvely charge ust partcles may conserably affect the stablty of varous astrophyscal structures aganst thermal nstablty, whch can not be explane wth the help of gravtatonal nstablty. Key wors: thermal nstablty, usty plasma PACS: 53.20.Ex, 52.30.-g, 98.58.-w The formaton an exstence of a large number of astrophyscal structures such as nterstellar clous, solar promnence, localze structures n planetary nebulae etc. can not be explane by means of conventonal gravtatonal nstablty [1]. However, t has been argue that thermal nstablty may be a reasonably goo canate, wth can accelerate conensaton, gvng rse to localze structures whch grow n ensty by loosng heat, manly through raaton [1,2]. The frst comprehensve analyss of thermal nstablty n a ffuse nterstellar gas s frst gven by Fel [2]. Subsequently, many authors consere the process of thermal nstablty n fferent crcumstances e.g. n hyrogen plasmas [3], to explan formaton of clumpy gas clous n two phase meum [4], an thermal nstabltes n photooze nterstellar gas [5]. Recently, Brk [7] has consere thermal conensatons n a weakly onze hyrogen plasma. 1 E-mal : mpb@guphys.cjb.net Preprnt submtte to Elsever Scence 22 October 2018
In recent years, however, t has been realze that heaver ust partcles consttutes an ubqutous an mportant component of many astrophyscal plasmas. [7 9] nclung nterstellar clous, stellar an planetary atmosphere, planetary nebulae etc. It s, thus of partcular nterest to see the effect of ust partcles on the role of thermal nstablty n astrophyscal stuatons. One of the obvous facts of ntroucng ust as a component of plasma s the propagaton of very low frequency compressonal moes [10]. We, n ths paper, nvestgate thermal nstabltes n a multcomponent plasma wth electrons, ons, an ust partcles, assumng that a λ D, where a s the average ust sze, s the average nter-ust stance, anλ D sthe Debye length. We conser the ust partcles to be negatvely charge an col, whereas the ons can loose energy through raaton by e-exctaton. We further assume that electrons are sothermal. We ntrouce a heat-loss functon [2] exclusve of thermal conucton, whch takes care of the raatve loss. For smplcty, we o not take nto account the ust-charge fluctuaton, whch usually has a stablzng effect [6]. The resultant equatons are two-flu magnetohyroynamcs MHD) equatons wth Boltzmann strbuton for the electrons. The ust acoustc DA) an ust-on acoustc DIA) moes [10] are rule out by vrtue of col ust assumpton. We show that the sobarc conton for thermal conensaton moe s sgnfcantly mofe by the ncluson of ust ynamcs. We also fn the exstence of a new wave moe, solely because of the presence of the ust partcles. We begn by wrtng out the equatons for a unboune, weakly collsonal usty plasma wth a heat-loss functon Lρ,T), whch represents the rate of net loss of energy per unt mass, through raaton. We conser the ust partcles to be negatvely charge an col an the electrons obey Boltzmann relaton. We assume here that that on-neutral collsonal cross-secton s of the same orer as that of the electron-neutral collsons, so that the electrons can be treate as Boltzmann strbuton f T /T e )v Te /v T ) 1, an n practce ths conton s satsfe n the cases we are gong to conser n ths work. We observe that the presence of a sgnfcant ust populaton smaller δ e ) conserably mofes the nstablty crtera for the conensaton moe an has a stablzng effect. It s nterestng to note that the egree of onzaton has also a smlar effect on the stablty of the conensaton moe whch becomes mportant n certan stuatons. For example, n conensatons observe n planetary nebulae, the thermal nstablty s strongly assocate wth collsons of electrons wth N + an N ++ ons [2]. It shoul, however, be note that the contons 18) an 19) o not reuce to one gven by Fel even n absence of ust partcles, whch s because our conseraton of two-flu approxmaton. The nequalty 18) also mples that the growth rate of the conensaton moe s nepenent of the wave number n the short wavelength lmt, when the thermal-conuctvty s zero n opposte to a thermally conuctng plasma fnte k K ), where there s no conensaton for suffcently larger k. The growth rate of the moe s efntely smaller n presence of ust partcles, as we have guesse, but note the lengthenng of the cut-off wave number. In fact, the knees of the lower curves wth fnte k K prove to a bfurcaton pont n a collsonal plasma, as we shall see shortly. So, the presence of ust proves a stablzng effect aganst raatve conensatons. However, the range of nstablty shrnks to zero at T = 3.902, much hgher than 1.974, whch s for the ust-less case. Ths mples that for a planetary nebula wth a conserable amount of ust partcles, to be stable aganst the raatve conensaton moe, t has to be at a much hgher temperature. In Fg.4, we show the range of unstable temperature wth δ e. Note that a lower value of δ e correspons to hgher ust concentraton. To conclue, we have foun that the nstablty crteron for the thermal conensaton moe s sgnfcantly affecte by the presence of ust partcles, whch 8
can severely alter the stablty regmes of many astrophyscal conensatons where a sgnfcant number of ust partcles are present. The funamental wave moe s smlar n both cases wth an wthout ust partcles, though we now have another wave moe, whch s ue to the presence of ust partcles. Fnally, we have shown that the conventonal stablty regmes of many astrophyscal conensatons may be conserably change.
