The Illinois River is a spring-fed river rising in the Ozark Mountains in the northwest corner of Arkansas, southwest of Fayetteville, near the town of Hogeye. It is a 145-mile-long tributary of the Arkansas River, joining the Arkansas out of Tenkiller Ferry Lake South of Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

In 1828, the river was designated as a main waterway for the Cherokees. Tahlequah was the western terminus of the Trail of Tears.
