SPC Day 1, 2 and 3 Cnvective Outlk Inf The Day 1, 2 and 3 Cnvective Outlks cnsist f a narrative and graphic depicting severe thunderstrm threats acrss the cntinental United States. The Day 1 and 2 Outlks als include a frecast where thunderstrms are expected. The utlk text are written in technical language and intended fr sphisticated weather users. Three risk categries (SLGT, MDT, and HIGH) are used t symblize the cverage and intensity f rganized severe weather such as supercells, squall lines, and multicell thunderstrm cmplexes. A SLGT risk implies well-rganized severe thunderstrms are expected, but in small numbers and/r lw cverage. A MDT risk indicates a ptential fr a greater cncentratin f severe thunderstrms than the slight risk, and in mst situatins, the strms and assciated severe weather are mre intense. A HIGH risk area suggests a majr severe weather utbreak is expected, with the expectatin f either a cncentratin f strng trnades r an enhanced likelihd f a lng-lived wind event (derech) with the ptential f higher end wind gusts (80+ mph) and structural damage. On days when the severe strm cverage r intensity is nt expected t be sufficient fr a SLGT risk, but sme threat exists, a SEE TEXT label will be placed n the graphic where a 5% severe prbability exists. The SLGT, MDT and HIGH categries are dependent n the prbabilities used t determine the severe threat. The Tables belw shw the cnversin frm prbabilities t the apprpriate categrical utlk fr the Day 1, 2 and 3 Outlks. The Day 1 Outlks cntains individual severe prbabilities fr wind, hail and trnades, while the Day 2 and 3 Outlks nly frecast the cmbined prbability f all three types f severe
weather. Whether a cmbined r individual prbability, the values represent the chance f severe weather ccurring within 25 miles f any pint, which is abut the size f a majr metrplitan area. As an example, if yu were lcated within an area that had a 15% prbability fr trnades, this means yu have a 15% chance f a trnad ccurring within 25 miles f yur lcatin. This may seem lw, but severe weather is uncmmn at any ne lcatin, s yur chances f getting hit by a trnad r ther severe weather are small. Hwever, a 15% chance f a trnad within 25 miles f a pint means a trnad ccurring nearby is prbably at least 15 times greater than climatlgy and shuld be taken seriusly. The prbabilities fr hail and wind are likely t be higher than trnades in mst frecasts, since hail and wind ccur much mre frequently than trnades. Smetimes, a blue hatched area will be verlaid with the severe prbabilities. This blue hatched area indicates a 10% r greater prbability fr significant events ccurring within 25 miles f any lcatin in the area. A significant event includes any f the fllwing: Trnades rated EF2 r greater, Thunderstrm Wind Gusts at 65 kt r higher, Hail 2 inches r larger in diameter. Fr the cmbined Day 2 and Day 3 Outlks, the blue hatched area means there is a 10% r greater chance fr significant trnades, and/r damaging winds and/r hail. On the Day 1 Outlk (abve example), the hatched area will be n the specific hazard graphic (trnad) which the enhanced threat exists.
