EOSC114 Clicker questions spring 2008 1 of 20 EOSC114 spring 2008 - summary of PRS responses Introduction This page contains all questions generated in Spring term 2008 for use as in-class clicker questions. There is a separate table for each of six modules, and each row gives the module's day, question number, question and the bar graph summarizing student responses. A 20-pg PDF version is available for printing. For questions with no response data the Responses column contains a "no data" figure. Question may not have been used owing to lack of time, or some other reason. Questions are in the form of text for Roland's set because the PRS software does not reproduce the image properly from the Apple system (this is one of several reasons why a normal PRS "report" was not generated for this summary). Questions for other sections are given as an image of the corresponding PowerPoint slide. Some questions appear twice. Some instructors used such questions in a pre-lecture, post-lecture manner. Other times the instructor may have intended to use it in one lecture but ran out of time. Fragile System day q# Questions Responses fs4 1 Most electrical energy in BC is generated by hudroelectric dams. Do you think wind turbines should be developed as a significant source of energy in the near future? yes no fs4 2 The timescale for the mudslide disaster in California that was shon in the video was roughly 5. 6. seconds to minutes minutes to hours hours to days days to weeks weeks to months months to years fs4 3 The coast of the Americas that was most devastated by the 1998 El Nino weather was the east coast. True False
EOSC114 Clicker questions spring 2008 2 of 20 fs5 1 Do you feel that the worldwide food or energy shortages will affect you personally during your lifetime? Yes No fs5 2 How do you think you would respond if you encountered a real tornado? 5. 6. 7. rage incredulity joy fearful curiosity panic excitement other fs5 3 You are standing on shore and a ferry passes by. To determine the elapsed time between when the ferry passes and when the ferry generated waves reach the shore, you would use which wave speed? (Assume you know the distance between the ferry and shore.) 5. phase group light sound none of the above fs5 4 Do you think it is possible to have a wave without it propagating in some direction (discuss with a neighbor)? yes no fs5 5 For issues where we ask you to pair up, what do you think is the single most important reason we give "participation" marks for using the clicker? Promotes your ability to communicate your ideas. Strengthens your ability to debate and defend your answers, and to suggest improvements promotes a peer discussion that is balanced, with ideas put forth evenly from both partners. Promotes a safe environment for you to answer what you honestly think, rather than answering what you think the instructor wants. 5. Gives you feedback on how will you understand a topic. 6. Gives the instructor feedback on what needs to be taught better, or expanded upon. 7. Engages you in an active learning process 8. Encourages attendance.

No Yes, but both will be weak. Yes, strong downburst, but weak or no gust front. Yes, and they both can be strong 5. Not enough information to answer
EOSC114 Clicker questions spring 2008 11 of 20 s1 2 Which 2 weather hazards do you think will affect you the most in Vancouver? (type the most important one first, then type thenext most important before hitting Enter). 5. 6. lightning tornado hail downpours (of rain) and local flooding downbursts (of air) and gustfronts hurricanes s1 3 If you are outside when a supercell storm approaches, you shoud Hide under a large branch of a tree, to avoid being hit by hail. Stay away from a tree, to avoid being hit by lightning. Stay out of ditches, to avoid flash floods. Get inot a ditch, to avoid flying debris from tornadoes. s1 4 For thunderstorms to thrive they need to consume air containing a large amount of water vapour. From choices at right, pick the one moisture variable that indicates a large amount of water vapour (i.e. many water molecules) in the air. Talk with your neighbor. High saturation mixing ratio high mixing ratio high relative humidity none of the above s2 2 If you are outside when a supercell storm approaches, you should Hide under a large branch of a tree, to avoid being hit by hail. EOSC114 Clicker questions spring 2008 12 of 20 s3 1 Have you or a close friend or family member been struck by lightning? No Yes and they survived with only mild problems Yes and they survived with serious problems Yes and they died s3 2 If you were struck by lightning what chance do you think you would have of surviving? 5. 100% 75% 50% 25% zero chance s3 3 You can avoid being struck by lightning by looking for a descending "stepped leader" and then quickly moving out of the way True False s3 4 Speculate on what happens when air moelcules are removed from a hurricane core: 5. The hurricane dies The air column in the core collapses due to the vacuum. Cold stratospheric air descends into the troposphere to take the place of the missing air molecules in the core. The hurricane strengthens. Other possibilities. s4 1 You can avoid being struck by lightning by looking for a descending "stepped leader" and then quickly moving out of the way True False

Other possibilities. s5 1 Have you or a close friend or family member seen a tornado? No. Yes at a distance. Yes very close but no damage to their property. Yes and it damaged their property. s5 2 Which statement(s) are TRUE? 5. 6. Tornadoes always move towards the northeast in N. America. It is safe to be in a care in a tornado. Tornado warnings are ossied 6 to 12 hours in advance. Strong F3-F5 tornadoes can happen even without a supercell thunderstorm. Mobile homes attract tornades. None of the above are correct answers. s6 1 Enter the category (strength) of a most-intense storm (hurricane, typhoon, or tropical cyclone) you have been in. 5. 6. 7. Category 1 (weak) Category 2 Category 3 Category 4 Category 5 (strong) SuperTyphone None s6 2 Hurricanes don't hit British Columbia because (List all that are correct). They can hit BC but would be called "typhoons" in the E. Pacific The midlatitude winds blow Pacific hurricanes westward away from BC The sea surface is too cold (below the 26 degrees C that is needed). The tropopause is too shallow (only 10 km thick not the 15 km needed). 5. The steep coast mountain range protects BC from hurricanes. 6. Larger scale weather systems at our latitudes always destroy hurricanes. Waves
