Executive Director, Valley Library Consortium Saginaw, Michigan Re-posted The mission of the Valley Library Consortium (VLC) is to provide the greater Saginaw Valley Community with access to shared library and information resources through quality, cost effective automated services for its member libraries. The VLC is eager to continue the high level of service it provides to its members with a new Director. Working under the direction of the Board of the VLC, the Executive Director is responsible for the administration of the Consortium, including the operation and maintenance of the automated library system, monitoring of databases, communication with member library staffs, the development and administration of library staff educational programs, and the promotion and development of the Consortium and its various programs. Horizon (SirsiDynix) is the automated system currently in use for the twenty-five public, academic, school and special member libraries. This networked software allows libraries to manage the processes of acquiring, cataloging, providing public access and circulating of materials. Members have access to a shared bibliographic database of over 880,000 titles and 1.9 million volumes. The VLC will be selecting, implementing and migrating to a new automated library system within the next three to five years. An independent, 501(c)(3) organization with a healthy fund balance, the annual operating budget of the Consortium is approximately $540,000, funded through a combination of a flat annual membership fee and fees based on the members use of the system. In addition to the Executive Director, staff positions include a Systems Librarian, a Systems Analyst, and Computer Operator/Office Support. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Responsible for the day-to-day management of the Consortium, including the supervision of staff, the development and monitoring of budgets, the maintenance of equipment and supplies, issuance of status reports, and management of the physical plant Acts as landlord for the VLC office building Responsible for coordinating activities and operations between the Consortium's member libraries, including computer operations, interlibrary loan, and other joint activities

With the advice and authority of the VLC Administrative Council, establishes, monitors, and enforces policies and procedures involving VLC operations and, specifically, the use of VLC databases Monitors and advises appropriate individuals on the status of the VLC operations and databases Encourages interlibrary cooperation, specifically in respect to interlibrary loan activities and cooperative collection development Responsible for the development and management of the VLC educational program Coordinates training of library staffs and assists in the instruction of users Develops appropriate written instructions, and manages seminars, workshops and other educational forums Serves as an ex-officio member of the Board, VLC Administrative Council, the Database Control Group, and other committees, as required performs or delegates secretarial duties of the Administrative Council Responds to inquiries from potential new members Produces or coordinates all necessary reports and documentation, including procedural manuals Remains current on all VLC computer software and hardware, as well as new products and developments, including keeping the appropriate individuals in all member institutions informed of changes and developments Participates in professional activities, including appropriate committees and task forces, and attendance at professional meetings Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the Board, Consortium staff, member libraries, vendors and outside agencies Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Board The statements contained in this position description are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.
