Thunderstorms and tornadoes the same thing??! No, a thunderstorm is made when wet air and cold air come together.! The sound of their coming together is thunder

What is Lightening?! A flash of energy made from the air and the moisture coming together! It is actually an electrical charge! Lightening must discharge

How does lightening discharge?! Ex. you rubbing your feet on a carpet! When there is too much charge, it explodes! It usually hits things that are close up, like a tree, a house, a barn or other building.

Is lightening safe?! A flash of energy made from the air and the moisture coming together! Why does lightening hit high things?! Why would I be safer in a ditch rather than under a tree?

What do I do in a Thunderstorm?! Go inside!! If you are outside, lay in a ditch! Keep away from water (bath, kitchen tap, a pond)! Don t use anything electrical until the storm passes

How will I know a Tornado is Coming?

PROJECT Tornado Sirens In your community

As Soon You Hear a Siren:! GO TO YOUR SAFE PLACE!

Safe Places! Basement or Cellar

Safe Places! If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls

Safe Places! Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Do not open windows.! DON T GO OUTSIDE LOOKING FOR FLUFFY! SHE IS OK!

A vehicle, trailer, or mobile home! Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy, nearby building or a storm shelter. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes.

What if You are Not Near Shelter?! Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Be aware of the potential for flooding.! Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.! Never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas in a car or truck. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter.! Watch out for flying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes most fatalities and injuries.

Assume the position! Get in the crouch position!

TEXT PROJECT Tornado Debris DON T play in it! Even if it looks cool! DATE CLIENT

PROJECT DATE What do we do now? CLIENT

Feelings and Emotions! Everyone sees the disaster differently! Some may cry, wail, scream, or say nothing at all! They might be grieving for a lost loved one, a pet, a friend (even if they had no personal losses)! Some people may not want to talk at all

Feelings and Emotions! Act like nothing happened! Drink or use drugs! Fear of being left alone! Don t want to leave home

Feelings and Emotions! Everyone sees the disaster differently! Some may cry, wail, scream, or say nothing at all! They might be grieving for a lost loved one, a pet, a friend (even if they had no personal losses)! Some people may not want to talk at all

Feelings and Emotions! Everyone sees the disaster differently! Some may cry, wail, scream, or say nothing at all! They might be grieving for a lost loved one, a pet, a friend (even if they had no personal losses)! Some people may not want to talk at all

Feelings and Emotions! Feeling sick (cold/flu/ headaches)! Feeling like life has no meaning! Acting confused! Short attention span

So how can you help? (even though you are not very big)?

How to Help!! Talk with someone about your feelings - anger, sorrow, and other emotions - even though it may be difficult.

How to Help!! Do not hold yourself responsible for the disastrous event or be frustrated because you feel you cannot help directly in the rescue work.

How to Help!! Take steps to promote your own physical and emotional healing by healthy eating, rest, exercise, relaxation

How to Get Help!! Use existing support groups of family, friends, and religious institutions.! Your teacher! Classmates! The Wonderful School Counselor

How to Help!! Ensure you are ready for future events by restocking your disaster supplies kits and updating your family disaster plan. Doing these positive actions can be comforting.! Your super counselor will come by your classroom to show you how!

Your Assignment!! Write a journal article about your tornado experience! Be sure to include:! Drawings (color them!)! Stories! What it was like for you and your family! Your super counselor will come by your classroom to hear all about what you wrote and drew!
