Animals in Space Human astronauts are not the only living creatures to have orbited the earth. The very first animal in space was a Russian dog named Laika. Since then NASA has sent monkeys, mice, tadpoles, fish, and even an entire ant farm to space! The animals are not sent just for fun. Scientists use them to study the effects of zero gravity, or zero-g. Their findings are used to help make life better for humans travelling in space. There are strict regulations that NASA scientists must follow to ensure the animals have their needs met and are as safe as possible while in space. There are rules about the animal s housing, food, and their general care. NASA employs a team of space veterinarians to make sure their animal astronauts are well cared for. These veterinarians are trained astronauts and help plan any voyages involving animals. They also travel with the animals and monitor their health as well as conducting research. Special attention must be placed on the housing arrangements of the animals. Mice needed wire mesh cages so they can use their toes to keep them in place. They also required special bedding since wood chips would just float around in space. Even their gravity fed water bottles had to be exchanged for pressurized water bottles. A special gel had to be developed for the ant colony to live in. Unlike sand, the gel would not compress and crush the ants during the launch. It was also infused with all the nutrients they needed to stay healthy while in space. There have been some interesting findings. Aquatic animals like fish and tadpoles swim in loops while in space because they have no way to know which Page 4
way is up or down without gravity! These animal astronauts have proven very important to the continued development of the space program. Page 5
1. Why does NASA send animals into space? To keep the astronauts company. To see how they react to liftoff. To study the effects of zero gravity. To study the effect of space on animals. 2. What is the effect of zero-gravity on fish? They swim upside down. They swim in a circle. They cannot swim. They float. Page 6
3. What was the very first animal in space? A dog. A monkey. A fish. A mouse. 4. Why wouldn t the mice s gravity fed water bottles work in space? Mice don t need water in space. It kept breaking. They leak. There is no gravity in space. Page 7
5. What was the problem with using sand in the ant colony headed for space? The sand would compress during the launch and crush the ants. The sand would make a mess on the shuttle. The sand was not purified. Ants prefer gel to sand. 6. Which of the following sentences is a statement of opinion? There have been some interesting findings. Human astronauts are not the only living creatures to have orbited earth. The animals are not sent just for fun. Special attention must be placed on the housing arrangements of the animals. Page 8

Inside the Gate Chen had often wondered what went on behind the gates of the Forbidden City where the great Emperor of China Qian Long ruled. The great city had a moat surrounding it as well as a thick brick wall. There was also a watchtower on each of its four corners. Each building was ornately decorated. Chen had heard it had over eight hundred buildings. There were seventeen palaces, as well as temples and audience halls. Each building was connected by beautiful courtyards and gardens. Now he would finally get a chance to see it for himself. His father had just been hired to tutor the royal children who resided in the inner courts of the city. They would live there until his services were no longer required. Page 10
27. What was the purpose of the thick wall and the moat surrounding the Forbidden City? They kept people from seeing what went on inside. It made the city look impressive. They both helped protect the city. They kept the Emperor from escaping. 28. How did the boy feel about living in the Forbidden City? Eager Scared Nervous Worried Page 11
The following questions are not from any passage: 29. Which word means a place? they re there their none of the above 30. Which word is spelled incorrectly? January Janiter jeopardy judge Page 12
