The Golden Windows - Unit 3 Worksheets: Reader 2 More Reading WORKSHEET 1a Why People began to Live in Houses Once upon a time, the great god Aum called the sun bird. He gave it three gourds. They were closed at both ends. He told the sun bird, Here are three gourds. Take them to the human beings on the earth. Two of the gourds contain seeds. But this third one is not to be opened. They shall open it only when I tell them to. The sun bird flew down from heaven to the earth. On its way, it kept thinking about the third gourd. The bird grew more and more curious. Finally, the sun bird could bear it no longer and opened the gourds. The first two contained seeds, as Aum had said. The third gourd held the surprise. When the sun bird opened it, inside were death, sickness and all kinds of dangerous animals, snakes and reptiles. The sun bird did not know what to do.

When Aum saw the gourds had been opened, he hurried down to earth. But though he tried very hard, he could not capture the animals that had escaped from the third gourd. Now the earth became a dangerous place. People had to be careful that they were not attacked by these animals that roamed everywhere. Earlier, they had slept in the cool open air, on a soft carpet of leaves and grass. Now, they were afraid they would be bitten in their sleep. They realised that they would always have to be careful and protect themselves from these dangerous animals that roamed free. So, men and women began to build shelters and homes to live in. These homes were at first just simple structures four walls covered with a roof. The door was a hole in one wall, close to the ground. They crawled through it to enter their homes. The houses were dark and airless inside. People were used to the open air and disliked sleeping in these airless shelters. But they had no choice. Then, they thought of making small openings higher up in the walls, closer to the roof. These were the first windows that homes ever had. They allowed both air and light into homes. And that is how homes began to have windows and became airy and full of light. Soon, people began to like living in them.
