Grade 2 Social Studies Social Studies Grade(s) 2nd Course Overview This course provides an opportunity for students to explore their community and how communities operate. Scope And Sequence Timeframe Unit Instructional Topics People and Places Ways of Living People at Work Unit: People and Places Places Near and Far Course Details 1. All Kinds of Groups 1. Sharing Cultures 1. Needs, Wants, and Choices 2. Goods and Services 3. People Save Money 1. Maps and Globes 2. Land and Water 3. Weather and Climate 4. Resources The unit, People and Places, gives students skills needed to understand their responsiblity in a variety of groups. Duration: Group members have varying responsibilities depending what group they are in (family, peers, school, community). Roles are influenced by traditions over time. Topic: All Kinds of Groups Duration: This topic allows students to explore individual roles in different groups. Describe the responsiblities of group members Identify and follow rules established by the group Identify different types of groups Identify members of a group Identify the leader of a given group Unit: Ways of Living In the unit, Ways of Living, students will learn that our country's people have great diversity in the way they live. Roles are influenced by traditions over time. Topic: Sharing Cultures Duration: Duration: This topic allows students to explore different cultures. Describe ways our ancestry and traditions have contributed to the development of our family Unit: People at Work Duration: In this unit, People at Work, students will understand that because there are never enough resources, goods, or services to satisfy people's wants, people and nations make choices about what to buy. Identify the difference between goods and services Identify ways of trading, including bartering, to obtain needed goods and services Topic: People Save Money Duration: In this topic students will learn what prices, banks, and savings accounts are and how people use prices to decide what to buy. Explain how income and savings influence your ability to purchase goods and services Unit: Places Near and Far In this unit, Places Near and Far, students will learn that the world has different types of land and water. Earth has many physical features. Relationships exist between geographic factors and society. Maps represent our world. Topic: Maps and Globes Duration: Duration: This topic explains the differences and similarities between maps and globes. Describe the difference between a map and globe Identify and locate the seven continents and the oceans Recognize and identify the equator on a map or globe Topic: Land and Water Duration: In this topic students will learn the many forms of land and water on the earth. Identify various landforms on a map or globe Topic: Weather and Climate Duration: In this topic students will be introduced to weather and climate and how they affect people's lives.
