Course #716-26 Advanced Urban Analysis E Chapter 0 Introduction Lecture Title: - Spatial Analysis and GIS Instructor: Yukio Sadahiro 0.1 Introducing myself 0.1.1 Educational background Yukio Sadahiro Associate professor of the department of urban engineering Office room: 915 Phone: 03-5841-6273 E-mail: sada@okabe.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp Websites: [Japanese] http://okabe.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/okabelab/sada/home-j.html [English] http://okabe.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/okabelab/sada/home-e.html 1989 Bachelor of Engineering, Department of Urban 1991 Master of Engineering, Department of Urban 1994 Doctor of Engineering, Department of Urban 0.1.2 Professional experience 0.1.3 Research interests 1991 Assistant Professor, Department of Urban 1995 Lecturer, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo 1998 Associate Professor, Center for Spatial Information Science, University of Tokyo Theoretical, rather than empirical aspect of spatial analysis and GIS Spatial and spatiotemporal analysis Quality of spatial data and analysis Visualization and perception of spatial data Applications of GIS including urban analysis 2001 Associate Professor, Department of Urban 1

Spatial and spatiotemporal analysis Quality of spatial data and analysis Statistical analysis of point distributions Spatial relationship between spatial distributions Analysis of uncertain (ambiguous, ill-defined) spaces such as cultural space, social space, and historical space. Spatial data mining The above analysis where spatial is replaced with spatiotemporal Relationship between space and time Evaluation, description and representation of spatial data quality Effect of inaccuracy on spatial data analysis Effect of data aggregation and disaggregation MAUP (Modifiable Areal Unit Problem) Integration of spatial data of different quality Mapmatching Visualization and perception of spatial data Applications of GIS including urban analysis Visualization of higher-dimensional (>2) spatial data Visualization of multivariate spatial data Integration of modern visualization and analytical tools in GIS Visualization of fuzzy spaces Visual support for spatial and spatiotemporal decision making Analysis of retail structure in Tokyo Analysis of choice behavior in urban spaces Location planning of urban facilities Spatial optimization of spatial boundaries 0.1.4 Published papers 0.2 Outline of course contents Publication list is available on my website. Lecture schedule (tentative) 0.2.1 Introduction to GIS April14: (1) [Chapter 0] Introduction 21: (2) [Chapter 1] Introduction to GIS 28: (3) [Chapter 2] Spatial data May 12: (4) [Chapter 3] Data acquisition 19: (5) [Chapter 4] Preprocessing 1 26: (6) [Chapter 4] Preprocessing 2 June 2: (7) [Chapters 5&6] Introduction to spatial analysis, Visual analysis 9: (8) [Chapter 7] Spatial operation 16: (9) [Chapter 8] Spatial analysis 1 23: (10)[Chapter 8] Spatial analysis 2 30: (11)[Chapter 8] Spatial analysis 3 What is GIS? Why do we have to use GIS? 0.2.2 Spatial data 0.2.3 Data acquisition How do we represent spatial phenomena in a computer? How do we obtain spatial data we need in our study? Who provides the spatial data we need?? A paper map 0.2.4 Preprocessing 0.2.5 Introduction to spatial analysis If we purchase spatial data, can we use them immediately in our GIS package? What is spatial analysis? Is it different from ordinary statistical analysis?? 3

0.2.6 Visual analysis 0.2.7 Spatial operation What is visual analysis? What should we do after visual analysis? 0.2.8 Spatial analysis 0.2.9 Spatial modeling What s next? How do we predict a spatial phenomenon?? 0.2.10 Spatial optimization 0.3 Materials for the lecture How do we optimize the location of urban facilities? Instead of blackboard, powerpoint files will be used. For your convenience, the files will be put on my website: http://ua.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/okabelab/sada/docs/classaua-e.html You can download the PDF version of the powerpoint files from the address above. Which is the better plan? Note: The files are prepared for class use. Please do not use them for other purposes. 4

0.4 Prerequisite 0.5 Textbooks and references All statistical, mathematical, and computational techniques are given in the class. However, it is desirable to study basic statistics and basic mathematics (linear algebra) in advance. No textbook is specified. Reference books will be introduced in each chapter. 0.6 Grading Reports Submission of at least two (out of four-five) reports is required. To write your report, you can consult anything including textbooks and the Internet, if necessary. You can submit your report by either handing in its hardcopy or sending an e-mail with an electronic file. Most file formats used by word processing software are readable, but Microsoft Word format is preferable. No examination is conducted. 0.7 One (unusual) application of GIS: Sadahiros map in Japan Sadahiro is a rare last name in Japan. The list of Sadahiros in the NTT telephone directory, 2001. Sadahiro sounds like a first name to Japanese people. They always say Is this really a last name? Is this a reasonable misunderstanding? The data were converted into spatial data by geocoding. The point data were aggregated in each prefecture. 5

Figure: The ratio of households whose last name is Sadahiro Figure: The ratio of households whose first name is Sadahiro 365 households whose last name is Sadahiro. 342 households whose first name is Sadahiro. END However, Sadahiro is used as the first name only for men, and the householders listed in the telephone directory are usually male. My conclusion: Sadahiro is used as the last name more frequently than the first name. 6
