THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION HISTORIANS USE THE WORD REVOLUTION TO MEAN NOT ONLY A POLITICAL EVENT LIKE THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, but... AN EVENT (or TIME PERIOD) IN WHICH PEOPLE (EITHER THROUGH A SINGLE INVENTION OR A TOTALLY NEW WAY OF THINKING) CAUSE AN ENORMOUS CHANGE FOR HUMANS AND LIFE ON EARTH THE SCIENTIFIC REV. IS AN EXAMPLE

WHAT CAUSED THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION? ALTHOUGH SOME ANCIENT BOOKS HAD BEEN AVAILABLE, EUROPEANS REDISCOVERED MANY GREEK AND ROMAN CLASSICS THE GREAT SCHISM, BUBONIC PLAGUE, & THE REFORMATION GREATLY WEAKENED THE POWER OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH (scientists become freer to think different thoughts w/o being toasted) EUROPEAN EXPLORATION DISCOVERED MANY NEW LANDS, PLANTS, ANIMALS, PEOPLES & VASTLY DIFFERENT LIFESTYLES (this created uncertainty as to what is really right or true )

WHAT THE CHANGE WAS ~1300-1500 S THAT BROUGHT ON THE SCI. REV. THE PRINTING PRESS SPREAD OLD & NEW IDEAS (like the influence of internet today) EXPLORATION FORCED HUMANS TO DEVELOP NEW TECHNOLOGY IN ALL AREAS: ASTRONOMY, CLOCKS, CANNON, MEDICINE, BOTANY & BIOLOGY (inventions always lead to other, unexpected ways of doing things) RISE OF UNIVERSITIES IN THE 1200-1300 S (creates new scholars, thinkers, & scientists)

THE INFLUENCE OF THE ANCIENT GREEKS BECAUSE OF THEIR INTELLIGENCE & VAST ANCIENT WRITINGS, SOME GREEKS WERE ACCEPTED FOR 1,000+ YEARS ARISTOTLE (#1!), PTOLEMY, & GALEN ARE EXAMPLES HARD TO MAKE PEOPLE START TO ACCEPT NON-ANCIENT GREEK SCIENCE

THE CLASH OF OLD & NEW SCIENCE Like the earth being round, some ancient Greeks also knew the sun not the earth was the center of the solar system. BUT... PTOLEMY S GEOCENTRIC THEORY WAS ACCEPTED AS TRUE BY MOST UNTIL... COPERNICUS CHALLENGED IT (1543) and... KEPLER PROVED IT MATHEMATICALLY comet & super nova in the 1570 s helped too (universe couldn t be unchanging if things blew up )

GALILEO THE CLASH OF SCIENCE AND RELIGION MOVEMENT OF IDEAS: GALILEO FINDS OUT ABOUT A DUTCH TELESCOPE & BUILDS HIS OWN LOOKS IN IT and wow!: JUPITER has 4 MOONS, SUN has DARK SPOTS, MOON has CRATERS (not smooth) Galileo says COPERNICUS IS RIGHT GETS IN BIG TROUBLE WITH THE CHURCH

GALILEO THE CLASH OF SCIENCE AND RELIGION "T:\North\TEACHERS\World History 4.2\World history videos\galileo1-moon.mp4" T:\North\TEACHERS\World History 4.2\World history videos\galileo2-sun.mp4 "T:\North\TEACHERS\World History 4.2\World history videos\galileo3-experiment.mp4" http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/galileobattle-for-the-heavens.html #4 here: 32min-35:30 for reaction to his claims #5 trial is 1:32:00.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD SCIENCE & THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD IS STRICTLY A EUROPEAN INVENTION F. BACON & R. DESCARTES DEVELOP IDEAS THAT WILL LATER BECOME the SCIENTIFIC METHOD: HYPOTHESIS, EXPERIMENT, ANALYZE RESULTS, REFINE, PUBLISH

NEWTON: THE GIANT OF THEM ALL KEPLER DISCOVERS KEY TO PLANETARY MOVEMENT GALILEO DISCOVERS KEY TO EARTHLY MOVEMENT NO ONE COULD FIGURE OUT HOW THEY WERE LINKED until... NEWTON S LAW OF UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION EXPLAINS ALL UNIVERSAL MOVEMENT sort of...

EFFECTS OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL CHANGES FOLLOW SCI. REV. EDUCATED PEOPLE IN EUROPE BELIEVE THAT IF NATURAL LAWS CAN EXPLAIN THE UNIVERSE, THEN NATURAL LAWS CAN BE USED TO EXPLAIN & HELP HUMANITY ENLIGHTENMENT: INTELLECTUAL MOVEMENT THAT BELIEVED IN PROGRESS HUMANS CAN IMPROVE THEMSELVES THROUGH REASON
