SHREE VELAGAPUDI RAMA KRISHNA MEMORIAL COLLEGE NAGARAM 522268, GUNTUR (DIST), ANDHRA PRADESH Report of the DST SEATS INSPIRE Programme INTERNSHIP SCIENCE CAMP Held from 07-02-2012 to 11-02-2012 (5 Days Work Shop) COURSE CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF COURSE MODULE A five day workshop sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (DST) was organized by Shree Velagapudi Ramakrishna Memorial College, Nagaram, Guntur (Dist.) Andhra Pradesh during 07-02-2012 to 11-02-2012. This workshop was an important opportunity to bring out the discussions about the ongoing research works of various Science fields. The important aim of discussions was to Inspire the Intermediate Science students towards Science subjects. This will help the nation to attract more students to science and hence to research purpose. Eminent personalities and Scientists opened the workshop. It was attended by 150 participants, the Intermediate students of Science stream from various Jr. colleges in and around Nagaram of Guntur and Prakasam (Dists.) Sri BurraRatnaRaju, Principal and Sri G. Hanumantha Rao, H.O.D of Mathematics Department acted as the Convenor and Organizing Secretary of the INSPIRE SEATS Programme.

Inaugural Function The Inaugural session was initiated by Dr. S.R.K. Prasad, Correspondent, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore who highlighted the aims of the INSPIRE Programme. He also inspired the participants by taking the eight point oath formed Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Former President of India. Photographs and models related to suggested broad themes of Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Mathematics were displayed and they were much attracted by the participants. The inaugural session was also attended by Dr. A.D.L. Prasad, Secretary and Correspondent, S.V.R.M. College, Nagaram. Sri N. Raghu Kumar, Deputy D.E.O., Bapatla, Dr. K. Laskhmi Narayana, Sindhur Institute of Technology, Siddipet; Dr. R.T. Ravi, Scientist, ICAR, New Delhi; Prof. V.S. Murthy, IIT, Chennai; Prof. P. Kanda Swamy, Bharthiyar University, Coimbatore, Prof. S.C. Samantha, IAPT, Secretary, Midnapur (WB); Dr. M. Krishna Murthy, Varsity Education Management Limited, Hyderabad; in this Inaugural session a book was released on physics by name Experimentation in Physical Sciences

KEY NOTE ADDRESS The key note address was given by Prof. V.S. Murthy, IIT, Chennai who spoke on The Science of Resveratrol Prof. Murthy said that the presentation is on the latest research in the areas of longevity, cancer and latest diseases. It is medicine which has been a natural extract from grapes skin, wine grape juice, peanuts, blue berries, bilberries and cranberries. He also discussed the benefits of Resveratrol. Prof. Murthy concluded his speech by saying how resveratrol works in controlling obesity.

Day I (07-02-2012) Talk : 1 Next walk way presented by Prof. P. Kanda Swamy, Bharatiar University, Coimbatore on Mathematics prospects and Future Prof. Swamy said that though mathematics is everything in nature from rabbits to seas shells. In his address, Dr. Swamy presented the Fibonaci number series and the simple definition of the whole never ending series. He gave examples of rabbits to prove this statement. At the end of his speech, he gave the list of some prestigious institutions where mathematics can be perused. He also gave the list of some reputed organizations where there is application of mathematics.

Talk : 2 The second lecture was delivered by Dr. M.Krishna Murthy, Varsity Education Management Pvt. Ltd. on Chemistry Bigger than life Dr. Murthy started his speech saying that Chemistry is the big story of a small electron. He said that the lightest of all organic gaseous compounds is methane. Dr. Murthy highlights the structures of hydrogen, carbon, ammonia, alamine, Glycine. Dr. Murthy discussed that when electrons are accelerated and stopped a photon of light will be generated and if the photos are high enough they can combine to form an electron or pistron pair.

Talk : 3 Next talk was presented on Luminescence Day to Day life: Physics of Fluorescent Lamp and light Emitting Diodes by Prof. V.S. Murthy, IIT, Mumbai. He explained the evolution of light sources, LED application, fluorescence phosphorescence, their mechanisms, application, emission of light etc. Talk : 4 The last talk on day one was delivered by Dr. S.C. Samantha, on Birth of Quantum Numbers Physics of Hydrogen Atom. Dr. Samantha started his speech by saying the Atomic theories of Neil Bohar and Ruthuford. Later he explained what Alpha particles are and what is atomic spectra and spectral series and electronic spin etc. he concluded his speech by explaining the Stern Gerlacts Experiment.

Day II (08-02-2012) Talk : 1 Prof. S.K. Dogra, IGNOU, New Delhi, gave a lecture on Intermolecular Forces Prof. Dogra began his talk by saying how inter molecular forces work. He explained how inter molecular forces can be divided into. He explained the electronic structures of atom, electron charge density etc. he also explained what an induced dipole and polarizability are he further discussed exceptions of Inter Molecular Forces Talk : 2 The next speech on Macromolecules was delivered by Dr. Mannem Krishna Murthy, Varsity Education Management Pvt. Ltd. Hyderabad. Dr. Murthy began his lecture by beginning what polymers are and who coined the term Polymers later, he explained Macromolecules, polymerization and the two types of polymers i.e. synthetic

polymers and natural polymers. He explained how plastic are made of polymers. He gave structures and bonding of various polymers. He mentioned that low density polyethylene is used to make plastic bags, plastic wrap, and squeeze bottles. He also explained about nylon, a synthetic fiber, its structure and the derivation formula of Nylon. He later explained about polestar, ethylene which are used in clothing. Finally he mentioned about the natural polymers like proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Talk : 3 The next lecture was addressed by Prof. Ashok Kumar Misra IIT, Madras on Chemistry and mankind : shape of things to come Prof. Misra displayed various pictures of prehistoric time to tell how rapidly chemistry developed trough copper age, Bronze age, Iron age ect. And how Natron, a hydrated sodium carbonate was used to preserve the Egyptian mummies in ancient days. Later he mentioned the advent of the modern chemistry and the pioneers of modern chemistry and displayed their photographs. Later he explained the responsibilities of chemistry in near future in various fields; how LED and OLED are used, artificial photosynthesis; flexible opv; future energy needs like solar energy, biodiesel, fuel cells, batteries; material of future like nano materials, Aerogel, MRI etc. later he explained about green chemistry.

Talk: 4 The last speech on day II was given by Dr. K. Ravindra Kumar, Varsity Education Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad on Silicon and its compounds in daily life Dr. Kumar began his speech by giving introduction of silicon and its importance. He said that the pure form of silicon is Qwartz and impure form it is sand. Mentioning the importance at Silicon, Dr. Kumar said that it is used in electronic, making alloy wheels etc. the uses of polymers like Mica silicagel, sodium silicate were explained. Later he explained the silicones and its applications, in petroleum gelly, cooking oils etc. PRACTICAL SESSION In Physics practical session Prof. A.K. Misra, Dr. M. Krishna Murthy, Prof. S.K. Dogra demonstrated experiments related to Chemistry laboratory, a practical session Separation of Amino acids by paper chromatography was conducted. Sri K. Ravindra Kumar demonstrated experiments related to Physics on optics and electricity experiments was conducted. He showed solar cell experiments and laser wave length demonstration. WALK TALK We played Science Videoson NASA & Bigbangand as a walk-in-talk session, interaction between the participants and Prof. S.K. Dogra, Dr. M. Krishna Murthy, Sri K. Ravindra Kumar, Prof. A.K. Misra and the staff members of our college Physics and Chemistry departments was held.

Day III (09-02-2012) Talk : 1 Dr. K. Ravindra Kumar, Sri Chaitanya IIT Academy, Hyderabad, gave a lecture on Physics of Running. In his speech he pointed out the velocity or speed of the famous Olympic athlete. Usian Bolt popularly known as lightning bolt. He derived the formula for speed from the physical laws and got the value of the power by comparing the empiscal formula with derived one. Lastly he explained Olympiad Exam. Talk : 2 The second talk was delivered by Prof. D. Basavaiah University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad on Philosophy of Ultimate success in scientific life Prof. Basavaiah started his speech saying how science has improved the quality of life and cultural and

civilization. Next he has given various important components for scientific success. He mentioned that a student should have high ambition to achieve something great and useful to society. He said that perseverance and hard work are needed to achieve success in one s life. Later he displayed the photographs of famous personalities of the world like, Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Napoleon, and Scientist like Isac Newton and his three laws of motion; James walt; the Wright Brothers; Micheal Faraday, Louis Pasteur, Alfred Nobel, Marie Curie, Wohler, Frit Habar, Graham Bell, Marconi, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Baird, Fleming, Pauling, Watson and Crick, R.B. Woodward, H.C. Brown, Sri C.V. Raman and their contributions to science. Later he explained what is science and importance classes of sciences. Talk : 3 Next lecture on Modern Biology in Health and Disease was delivered by Dr. Murali Dharnan Bashyam, CDFD Hyderabad. Dr. Muralidhar in the beginning told what DNA students for. He told the History of DNA and the pioneers of it. Next he gave the structures of DNA Nucleotide, DNA Bonding later he told about Polynucleotide s and their structure and bonding. He also explained the further discoveries in DNA. He mentioned that scientists, in the Human Genuine project, had obtained the DNA sequence of the 3 billion base pairs making up the human genome in 2003. He also gave the amazing facts of DNA. Later he explained the human the human genetic disorder. He gave examples of cells in human body.

Talk : 4 Next lecture on Areal distance presenting transformation on the plane was delivered by Prof. C. Robinson E. Raja, Indian statistical institute, Bangalore. He explained lines in R : A line is a shape consisting of points determined by an equation of the type Y = mx + c. After that he explained area of plane shapes like triangle, square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid and circle. He also explained Shift transformation takes parallel lines. Finally he explained as T is a linear transformation it takes straight lines in to straight lines and are dimension case, distance pursuing transformations and plane, relation between transpose and scalar product. PRACTICAL SESSION In Physics practical session Sri K. Ravindra Kumar, Hyderabad demonstrated experiments related to Optics and Luminescence. In chemistry PracticalsSpectrophotometric,P H Metric titrations and Conductometrictitrations. In life sciences laboratories Fossil impressional of Angiosperms and their formation, evolution tree regarding Angiosperms Museum Specimans- observation of some economic interestclassification of Bryophyta and pteridophyta with examples and plant physiology experiments anatomy slides observation demonstration by Dr. K. Ravindra Kumar, Prof. D. Basavaiah & Dr. M.D. Bhashyam WALK TALK In walk-in-talk session interaction between the participants and Dr. K. Ravindra Kumar, Prof. D. Basavaiah & Dr. M.D. Bhashyam and the staff members of our college Physics, Chemistry& Biology departments was held.

Day IV (10-02-2012) Talk : 1 The first lecture on Day 4 was given by Sri G. Hanumantha Rao, Dept. of Mathematics, S.V.R.M. College, Nagaram on An Approach to Basic Mathematics Sri Rao began his speech by saying whether mathematics is a social science pure science. He gave various quotation of famous mathematicians on Mathematics. He gave squares of various numbers and cube roots of numbers. He had also shown how multiplication is made easy by giving various examples, problems and their solution.

Talk : 2 The second talk on day 4 was delivered on Nano Science and Nano Technology ; surface characterization by Dr. B. Sridhar, IICT, Hyderabad. In the outline of the talk Dr. Sridhar gave synthesis, characterization and applications of various organic transformations; approaches to Nano Scale structures, Dr. Sridhar explain Nano Science, Nano Technologies, Nano Materials, Size dependent properties core shell Nano particles etc. in the synthesis of Nano particles, he explained the stober method etc. later he told about metallic Nanoshells. He also explained the electron emission process and principle of XPS, photo electron spectrum, green chemistry TEM images, magnetically recoverable Nano materials, gum Acacia etc. later, he explained medicinal chemistry. Resvertrol and its benefits, colchicines and its benefits, B nitro styranes and its benefits, their structures were discussed. Talk : 3 The next talk was addressed by Prof. Pradeep Sarin, IIT, Mumbai, on Ceramics Application and Thermo luminescence study of Natural minerals used on ceramic tiles industry Dr. Sarin discussed the applications of various types of ceramics. He said that humans can not start their life without ceramics. He showed various products and the area of particular product. He also told the future trades of ceramics. Next he discussed various types of ceramic materials. Like crystalline ceramics, carbon ceramic etc. later he explained super conductivity, messier effect, pie electricity, pyro electricity, ferro electric effect dielectric response, Titanates etc. He mentioned the ceramic processing its aides too. In the conclusion, he told how ceramic are used as human plants, how they are used in electronic devices and their application in geology.

Talk : 4 The last talk on day 4 was delivered by Prof. C. Rambabu, ANU campus, Nuzvid on Principles of Green Chemistry. Prof. Rambabu in his outline mentioned how chemical developments bring environmental problems and why we need green chemistry. He explained conventional synthesis and green synthesis. The alternative names of Green Chemistry are mentioned. The objectives of Green Chemistry, Challenges, goals, the twelve principles of it, structures were explained. Later he explained the energy, toxics in the environment. PRACTICAL SESSION In Physics practical session Prof. Pradeep Sarin, IIT, Mumbai demonstrated experiments related to Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism. In Chemistry laboratory, a practical Separation of Amino acids by paper chromatography was conducted. In Life Sciences laboratory, DNA isolation by Gel Electrophoresis seperatio of Pigments by Paper choromatography by Dr. B. Sreedhar & Prof. C. Rambabu WALK TALK Walk-in-talk session, interaction between the participants and Dr. B. Sreedhar & Prof. C. Rambabu, Prof. Pradeep Sarin and the staff members of our college Physics, Chemistry & Biology departments was held.

Day V (11-02-2012) Talk : 1 The next talk was delivered by Dr. Kota Murali, Chief Technologist and programme Director, Nano Technology, IBM India, Bangalore on Why Do you study science ; Dr. Murali started his speech saying that we study science for enjoyment; to know the un know; etc. He told the audience the excitements in chemistry, time scales of some fast processes, kinetics, slow reactions, fast reactions, how long it takes for a bond to break transient absorption measurements etc. next, he explained what is a femto second and what is a pico second. He also explained Femtochemistry and the Forerunners and the pioneers of Femtochemistry. Later he explained what is Fluorescence; fluorescence molecules why fluorescence is needed. He explained Tablonski energy diagram, fluorescence parameters, mirror image relationship, photo chemical reactions, molecular devices their structures etc. Later he explained the offon signaling mechanisms, fluorescence decay behavior etc. he also mentioned the fluorescent groups on proteins, fluorescence microscopy, tryptophan fluorescence.

Talk : 2 The second speech was addressed by Dr. A. Anjaneyulu lecturer in mathematics, V.S.R and N.V.R. College, Tenali on Graph Theory and its applications at the outset Dr. Anjaneyulu gave definition for a linear graph later he defined what is parallel edges or multiple edges. He said that a graph that has neither self loops nor parallel edges is called a simple graph. He also explained some applications of graphs. Next he discussed the seating arrangement problem, types of graphs like, finite graph, infinite graph etc. their brief history, when it was born etc. he also gave various pictures of graphs in his lecture. Later he explained Konigsberg Bridges problems, operation on graphs, Hamiltonian paths and circuits, their definition city route puzzle etc. Talk : 3 The third talk on day five was given by Dr. D.V. Rama Koti Reddy, A.V. College of Engineering, Andhra University, Vizag. On Micro Machines Dr. Reddy started his

speech by saying what is an instrument. The four types of elements were discussed. The told about the three phases of automation. Next he explained what is smart sensor, standardization, types of interface like real time service interface, diagnostic and management interface and configuration and planning interface. He also explained integrated smart sensors, level of integration and why we should use micro machines, advantages of MEMS. He mentioned that the world s smallest guitar is about 10 micro meters long. Talk : 5 The fifth talk on day five was presented by Prof. B. Kesava Rao, on Kiwifruit Flavonoids and their Anti oxidant Activity in Actinidia Prof. Rao, in his abstract mentioned that Kiwi fruits are abundant sources of anti oxidative photo chemicals such as carotenes, B. Vitamins, flavonoids, biomineral sylenium etc. The flesh colour various in different specious of Kiwi fruits. He has given the structures of colour Kiwi fruit anathocyarins. He has also shown various photographs of colour Kiwi fruits.
