Cell-ebrate Cells Cell Structure & Notes April 11, 2017
Warm-Up: Tuesday True or False? True Cells can only come from other cells
Today we are Learning: I can describe that cells are the basic unit of life I can compare and contrast plant and animal cells I can create a model of the basic function of the organelles in a plant and animal cell. I can connect that cells are grouped singular and multicellular.
Cell-ebrate Cell Notes Read through pages 16-23 on the parts of the plant & animal cell and fill out the graphic organizer. Note: Some organelles are not in the reading selection. We will go over them once everyone is done.
Cell Wall Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information Plant Tough, nonliving material that acts like an outside skeleton for each plant cell. It gives the cell its rigid structure It was the cell walls of the cork that Robert Hooke saw under the microscope when he named cells, cells.
Mitochondria Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information Organelles where food & oxygen react to release energy. Considered the powerhouse of the cell. A cell can have as few as one mitochondrion or as many as 10,000 or more. The number depends on the cells activity.
Chromosomes Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information A stringlike structure in a cell nucleus that carries genetic information controlling all the cell s activities. Not all organisms have the same # of chromosomes in their cells: Humans-46 Flies-12 Dog-78
Ribosomes Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information An organelle that puts together proteins for the cell.
Chloroplasts Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information Plant Organelle that makes sugars, using carbon dioxide, water, and the energy from sunlight. Belong to a group of organelles called plastids. Plastids store plants colors. Normally, the green chlorophyll hids other colors until the fall when other colors show.
Cell Membrane Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information A thin outer covering that holds a cell together. Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information An organelle that transports materials inside of the cell.
Lysosomes Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information Animal (sometimes in plant) small round structures located in the cytoplasm that are responsible for breaking down large food particles into smaller substances needed throughout the cell.
Cytoplasm Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information A clear, jellylike material that filled the space between the cell membrane and the nucleus
Vacuole Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information a storage place for nutrients, wastes, and water. A plant cell has a much larger storage area than an animal cell because it holds more water and sugars Animal cells have many small vacuoles while plant cell shave 1 central vacuole.
Nucleus Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information Control center for the cell. Holds the genetic information Is surrounded by a nuclear membrane.
Nuclear Membrane Plant Cell, Animal Cell or Special Information A membrane that encloses the nucleus. Controls what enters and exits the nucleus. Is sometimes referred to as the nuclear envelope.
Compare & Contrast Explain the similarities & differences between plant and animal cells. Plant Cells Animal Cells
