PSU Chemistry There are 3 Divisions of Chemistry: Analytical Physical Synthetic/Biological Entry to major: Requires a grade of C or better in the following courses: CHEM 110, 111, 112, 113, 210, MATH 140, 141 GPA of at least 2.50 Graduate w/ Chemistry degree: Maintain a GPA of at least 2.00

PSU Chemistry Penn State s Chemistry Department is ranked #21 in US. According to US News and Report Faculty: Harry R. Allcock: Evan Pugh Professor of Chemistry James B. Anderson: Evan Pugh Professor Tom Mallouk: Evan Pugh Professor of Materials Chemistry and Physics Nicholas Winograd: Evan Pugh Professor of Chemistry

PSU Chemistry Courses General Chemistry CHEM 110, CHEM 111 (lab) Atomic structure, phases, solution, reaction (reactivity, ionic equation, stoichiometry, limiting reagent), thermodynamics, equilibrium CHEM 112, CHEM 113 (lab) Reaction rate, acid/base, thermodynamics, solubility, electrochemistry, transition metals, solid, MO theory and bonding Organic Chemistry CHEM 210 Principles & theories, nomenclature, functional group, structure, major reaction mechanism CHEM 212 Application of spectroscopy, reaction mechanisms, emphasis on the role of organic reactions in biological chemistry CHEM 213 Organic chemistry lab focuses on the most fundamental laboratory techniques for organic synthesis

PSU Chemistry Courses Analytical Chemistry CHEM 227 Analytical methods used in the biological and physical sciences, emphasis on acid/base, complexation equilibria, spectroscopy, separation Inorganic Chemistry CHEM 310 Inorganic chemistry concept/principle based, focuses on structures, bonding, properties CHEM 412 Structure, bonding, and properties of transition metal chemistry Physical Chemistry CHEM 450 Thermodynamics and its molecular interpretation CHEM 452 Quantum chemistry with emphasis on molecular structure, spectroscopy, kinetics CHEM 457 Physical chemistry lab focuses on principles of physical chemistry, techniques of error analysis and quantitative data presentation

PSU Chemistry Courses The W courses CHEM 431W: Organic and Inorganic Preparations The study, evaluation, and discussion of the mechanisms of selected organic reactions CHEM 425W: Chromatography and Electrochemistry Gas, liquid, and other forms of chromatography; important techniques of electrochemistry. CHEM 423W: Chemical Spectroscopy Modern methods and instruments of spectroscopy and their applications to problems of chemical structure and analysis. CHEM 427W: Forensic Chemistry Analytical and instrumental methods used in the forensic sciences with special emphasis on the analysis and characterization of trace evidence. CHEM 459W: Advanced Experimental Physical Chemistry Laboratory experiments and projects for students interested in advanced study in physical chemistry.

Where to get help? Chemistry Resource Room Tutors everyday Instrument Room Organic chemistry (IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR) Professor/TA office hours

Outside of class Research CHEM 294 (freshmen/sophomore) CHEM 494 (junior/senior) 1 credit: 4-5 hrs in the lab 2 credit 8-10 hrs in the lab Recommend: Don t rush into research, make sure you meet the professor and are comfortable with him/her. Do something you re interested in. American Chemical Society (ACS)

Preparing for the summer Career Fair: Internships is an opportunity offered by an employer to potential employees, called "interns", to work at a firm for a fixed, limited period of time (couple of months long). Externships a temporary training program in a workplace, especially one offered to students as part of a course of study (couple of days long). Co-op is a type of internship program that enables college students to receive career training with pay as they work with professionals in their major fields of study (typically 2 semesters long).

After Graduation Grad School Find your interest. Medical, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, etc Prepare early for MCAT/DAT/PCAT. Corporate World Best if you had an internship with that company.
