Groundwater Investigation Southgate Gravel Pit 10/10/2014 Part of Lot 15, Concession 15 Groundwater Investigation Southgate Gravel Pit Part of Lot 15, Concession 15 formerly Township of Proton, Township of Southgate 1.0 INTRODUCTION GSS Engineering Consultants Ltd. was awarded the project for the groundwater investigation and subsequent report for the Township of Southgate, proposed gravel pit located in part of Lot 15, Concession 15, (formerly the Township of Proton) Township of Southgate, in the County of Grey, on March 31, 2014 by Drysdale Aggregate Consulting. The gravel pit, which is located on part of Lot 15, Concession 15, former Township of Proton, Township of Southgate is owned by the Township of Southgate and is located as shown on attached Figure 1. The proposed area to be licenced is approximately 10.2 ha and is primarily zoned A1 (Agriculture) and a very small portion EP (Environmental Protection) on the east side. It is proposed to apply for a Class A, Category 3 licence for a gravel pit above the groundwater table. GSS Engineering Consultants Ltd. 14-017 1

Groundwater Investigation Southgate Gravel Pit 10/10/2014 Part of Lot 15, Concession 15 2.0 HYDROGEOLOGICAL SETTING The proposed Southgate township gravel pit, is located in the Saugeen River watershed. The tributary of the Saugeen River flows north and northwest from this site. Figure 2 shows the proposed gravel pit area, lots, concessions, general topography, roads, streams, wetland areas and surrounding homes and buildings. The Surficial Geology as mapped by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources is shown on Figure 3. The surficial geology map shows that the proposed gravel pit is located mainly on a ridge of glaciofluvial deposits, river deposits and delta topset facies-sandy deposits. However, there are areas to the west that are made up of stone-poor, sandy to silty sand-textured till on Paleozoic terrain. In addition, the northwest corner area to be licensed is organic deposits of peat, muck and marl. It should be noted that the overburden at the site is underlain by bedrock from the Guelph formation. Groundwater Investigation Southgate Gravel Pit 10/10/2014 Part of Lot 15, Concession 15 3.0 GROUNDWATER INVESTIGATION April 14, 2014 On April 14, 2014, five (5) test holes were dug using a high hoe at the Southgate Gravel pit. The location of the test holes are shown on drawing No. 14-017-01. The water table was found in all test holes at depths ranging from 1.2 to 5.4 m. Ground elevations and locations of the test holes were surveyed within two (2) weeks after April 24, 2014. General ground topography was obtained from a plan prepared by W.L Bradshaw as shown on drawing No 14-017-01. The test holes TH-1 to TH-5 were logged on April 24, 2014, showing the location of the water table and type and thickness of the soils. A summary of the logs for test holes TH-1 to TH-5 are shown on Table 1. GSS Engineering Consultants Ltd. 14-017 3

Groundwater Investigation Southgate Gravel Pit 10/10/2014 Part of Lot 15, Concession 15 4.0 GROUNDWATER ELEVATIONS AT SOUTHGATE GRAVEL PIT Estimated seasonal high groundwater elevations at the proposed Southgate gravel pit measured on April 24, 2014 are shown Table 2. These groundwater elevations represent the estimated high groundwater elevations since they were taken in April, 2014. The seasonal high groundwater elevations are shown on drawing No. 14-017-01 which also shows the groundwater contours for the estimated seasonal high groundwater table. The groundwater elevations show that groundwater in the deposits in the shallow overburden is generally moving in a southeasterly direction towards the tributary of the Saugeen River. The gravel pit should be designed such that the bottom elevations are a minimum of 1.5 m above the estimated seasonal high groundwater elevations as shown in Table 2 and Drawing 14-017-01. Groundwater Investigation Southgate Gravel Pit 10/10/2014 Part of Lot 15, Concession 15 5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS It is recommended that an Operational and Rehabilitation Plan for the Southgate gravel pit be prepared using the estimated seasonal high groundwater elevations from Table 2 and from drawing No. 14-017-01, which forms part of this report. The bottom elevation for extraction from the gravel pit should be a minimum of 1.5 m above the seasonal high groundwater elevations. No negative impacts to surrounding natural features (including surface water) and associated groundwater features are anticipated. Respectfully submitted, GSS Engineering Consultants Ltd.
