We continue the study (initiated in [8]) of the orbital stability of the ground state cylinder for focussing non-linear Schrödinger equations in the H s (R n ) norm for ε s, for small ε. In the L -subcritical case we obtain a polynomial bound for the time required to move away from the ground state cylinder. If one is only in the H -subcritical case then we cannot show this, but for defocussing equations we obtain global well-posedness and polynomial growth of H s norms for s sufficiently close to.. Introduction. Let n be an integer. We consider the Cauchy problem for the non-linear Schrödinger equation iu t + u = F (u); u(x, 0) = u 0 (x) (.) where u(x, t) is a complex-valued function on R n R, u 0 (x) lies in the Sobolev space H s (R n ) for some s R, and the non-linearity F (u) is the power non-linearity F (u) := ± u p u, for some p > and sign ±. We refer to the + sign as defocussing and the - sign as focussing. For certain values of p, the long-time behavior of this equation has been extensively studied in the energy class u(, t) H s (R n ), s = (see e.g. [34], 99 Mathematics Subject Classification. 35Q53, 4B35, 37K0. When p is an odd integer, then F is algebraic and there are a number of results addressing the long-time behavior in H s in this case ([3], [], [5], [6], [7], [], [3], []). One of the main purposes of this paper is to demonstrate that these techniques can be partially extended to the non-algebraic case. We briefly review a portion of the known local and global well-posedness theory for this equation. It is known (see e.g. [4]) that the Cauchy problem (.) is locally well-posed in H s when s max(0, s c ), where s c is the critical regularity s c := n p. (.) In the sub-critical case s > s c the time of existence depends only on the H s norm of the initial data. We refer to the case s c as the H -subcritical case, and the case s c 0 as the L -subcritical case. In particular, local well-posedness below H is only known in the H -subcritical case. These local well-posedness results are known to be sharp in the focussing case (see [3]); for instance, one has blowup in arbitrarily small time when s s c. In light of the recent work in [6] it is likely that these results are also sharp in the defocussing case (at least if one wants to have a fairly strong notion of well-posedness). In the H -subcritical case it is known [4] that the Cauchy problem (.) is globally well-posed in H s for all s ; indeed, one also has scattering in the defocussing case [], [9]. The global well-posedness is an easy consequence of the local theory, conservation of the L norm and Hamiltonian H(u) := u ± p + u p+ dx, (.3) combined with the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. Similarly, in the L -subcritical case s c 0 one has global well-posedness in H s for all s 0. This leaves open the question of the global well-posedness in H s in the intermediate regime 0 s c s. When the initial data has small H s norm then global well-posedness is known (see e.g. [3]) but the general case is still open. For simplicity we restrict ourselves to the defocussing case. The cases when p is an odd integer have been extensively studied; we summarize the known results in Table. Our first theorem extends these results 3 to fractional p in the regime 0 s c. Theorem.. Suppose that we are in the defocussing case with s c (see (.)). Then the Cauchy problem (.) is globally well-posed in H s whenever > s > ε(n, p) > s c When p is not an odd integer one also needs the constraint s p because of the limited regularity of F. We shall gloss over this technicality since we will primarily be concerned with the regime 0 s. In the L -critical case s c = 0 one might expect global well-posedness for large L data by combining L conservation and the local well-posedness theory. However a subtlety arises because the L norm cannot be scaled to be small, and indeed in the focussing case the L mass can concentrate to a point singularity. In the defocussing case the large L global well-posedness remains an important open problem (even in the radial case). 3 Similar results have been obtained for the non-linear wave equation in [5]. However the argument in [5] cannot be extended to NLS because it relies on the gain in regularity inherent in the wave Strichartz estimates, which are not present for the Schrödinger Strichartz estimates.

Furthermore, one has a polynomial growth bound for all times T R. u(t ) H s C(s, n, p, u 0 H s)( + T ) C(s,n,p) (.4) One can probably modify these arguments and exponents to handle focussing nonlinearities, especially in the L -subcritical case s c 0, but we shall not do so here. In the L -subcritical case one has global well-posedness for all s 0 thanks to L norm conservation, but the question of polynomial growth of H s norms for s close to 0 remains open. We have not explicitly calculated ε(n, p); the exponents given by our arguments are significantly weaker than those in the results previously mentioned. Our approach is based on the I-method in [4], [], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7] (see also [3]). The idea is to replace the conserved quantity H(u), which is no longer available when s, with an almost conserved variant H(Iu), where I is a smoothing operator of order s which behaves like the identity for low frequencies (the exact definition of low frequencies will depend ultimately on the time T in (.4)). Since p is not necessarily an odd integer, we cannot use the multilinear calculus (or X s,b spaces) in previous papers, and must rely instead on more rudimentary tools such as Taylor expansion (and Strichartz spaces). In particular there does not appear to be an easy way to improve the exponent ε(n, p) by adding correction terms to H(Iu) (cf. [3], [5], [7]). Also, we will avoid using the L conservation law as much as possible as this norm can be critical or supercritical. As a partial substitute we shall use the subcritical L p+ norm which we can control from (.3) (cf. [4]). In the cases when p is an odd power, smoothing estimates such as the bilinear Strichartz estimate of Bourgain (see e.g. [3]) are very useful for these types of results. However we will not use any sort of smoothing estimates in our analysis 4, and rely purely on Strichartz estimates instead. (One of the advantages of the I- method is that one can use commutator estimates involving the operator I as a 4 Indeed, the sharp bilinear improvements to Strichartz inequality in L p x,t norms are only known in dimensions n =, ; for higher dimensions the problem is connected with the very difficult restriction problem for the paraboloid (see e.g. [33] for a discussion).

Our second result concerns the orbital stability of ground states in the focussing case. For this result we shall restrict ourselves 5 to the L -subcritical case s c 0. When s c 0 there exists a unique radial positive Schwartz function Q(x) which solves the equation Q Q = F (Q) on R n (see [8], [7], [6]). We refer to Q as the canonical ground state at energy 6. The Cauchy problem (.) with initial data u 0 = Q then has an explicit solution u(t) = e it Q. More generally, for any x 0 R n and e iθ S, the Cauchy problem with initial data u 0 (x) = e iθ Q(x x 0 ) has explicit solution e i(θ+t) Q(x x 0 ). If we thus define the ground state cylinder Σ by Σ := {e iθ Q( x 0 ) : x 0 R n, e iθ S } we see that the non-linear flow (.) preserves Σ. We now investigate how the non-linear flow (.) behaves on neighborhoods of Σ. In [34], [35] Weinstein showed that in the L -subcritical case s c 0 and when n =, 3, the ground state cylinder Σ was H -stable. More precisely, he showed an estimate of the form dist H (u(t), Σ) dist H (u 0, Σ) (.5) for all solutions u 0 to (.) with dist H (u 0, Σ), and all times t R. In other words, solutions which started close to a ground state in H stayed close to a ground state for all time (though the nearby ground state may vary in time). To prove (.5), Weinstein employed the Lyapunov functional L(u) := H(u) + u = u + u + p + u p+ dx, (.6) which is well-defined for all u H. Since this quantity is a combination of the Hamiltonian (.3) and the L norm, it is clearly an invariant of the flow (.). The ground states in Σ then turn out to minimize L, so that L(u) L(Q) for all u H. More precisely, we have the inequality L(u) L(Q) dist H (u(t), Σ) whenever dist H (u(t), Σ) ; (.7) see [34], [35]. The stability estimate (.5) then follows easily from (.7) and the conservation of L. Weinstein s proof of (.7) requires the uniqueness of the ground state Q, which at the time was only proven for n =, 3 [8]. However, this uniqueness result has since been extended to all dimensions n [6] (with an earlier partial result in [7]). Thus (.7) (and hence (.5)) holds for all dimensions n (always assuming that we are in the L subcritical case s c 0, of course). In [8] the H orbital stability result was partially extended to regularities H s, 0 s, in the special case n =, p = 3 (which among other things is completely integrable). The second main result of this paper is a partial extension of the results of [8] to arbitrary L -subcritical NLS: 5 In the L -critical or L -supercritical cases the ground state is known to be unstable, indeed one can have blowup in finite time even for data arbitrarily close to a ground state in smooth norms. INSTABILITY BOUNDS FOR NLS 37 Theorem.. Consider the focussing case with s c 0. Suppose that u(t) solves (.) with dist H s(u 0, Σ) σ for some 0 σ and ε(n, p) s. Then one has u(t) H s for all t = O(σ C(n,p,s) ) for some C(n, p, s) > 0. In other words, if the initial data lies close to the ground state cylinder in H s norm, then the solution stays inside a ball of bounded radius in H s for a fairly long period of time. Note that if we tried to naively apply perturbation theory to prove this theorem, we would only be able to keep u(t) inside this ball for times t = O(log(/σ)) (because after each time interval of length, the distance to the ground state cylinder might conceivably double). Of course, when s = 0 or s = one can use the conservation laws to obtain Theorem. for all time t. However there does not seem to be any easy way to interpolate these endpoint results to cover the 0 s case, since the flow (.) is neither linear nor complex-analytic. The proof of Theorem. also proceeds via the I-method. The main idea is to show that the modified Lyapunov functional L(Iu) is almost conserved. It should be possible to refine this method by approximating u(t) carefully by a ground state as in [8] and obtain a more precise estimate of the form dist(u(t), Σ) ( + t ) C(n,p,s) dist(u 0, Σ) for all time t. (In [8] this is achieved in the model case n =, p = 3). However there seem to be some technical difficulties in making this approach viable, mainly due to the lack of regularity 7 of the non-linearity F, and so we will not pursue this matter. It should be possible to remove the constraint s > ε(n, p) and prove Theorem. for all s > 0 (as in [8]). This may however require some additional assumptions on p (e.g. one may need p + n ) as it becomes difficult to control the modified Hamiltonian for s close to zero otherwise.. Preliminaries: Notation. Throughout the paper n, p, s are considered to be fixed. We will always have the implicit assumption ε(n, p) s for some sufficiently small ε(n, p) > 0 in our arguments. However when p, F is not twice differentiable, and so correct estimation of the double difference seems very subtle.

Thus I N is an operator which behaves like the Identity for low frequencies ξ N, and behaves like a (normalized) Integration operator of order s for high frequencies ξ > N. In particular, I maps H s to H (but with a large operator norm, roughly N s ). This operator will be crucial in allowing us to access the H theory at the regularity of H s. We make the useful observation that I has a bounded convolution kernel and is therefore bounded on every translation-invariant Banach space. We also define the fractional differentiation operators α for real α by α u(ξ) := ξ α û(ξ) and the modified fractional differentiation operators α by α u(ξ) := ξ α û(ξ), where ξ := ( + ξ ) /. We then define the inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces H s and homogeneous Sobolev spaces Ḣs by u H s := s u L x ; u Ḣs := s u L x.
