Attention should be paid to: 1. orrectness of the results. 2. Presentation of the results and layout of the report. 3. ritical discussion of the results using the studied theory on numerical methods. The contents of the report will then be discussed (orally) with the examiners, at which the student may be asked to explain details of the programs and to rerun some of the problems. The project is individual and counts towards 40% of the final mark. The project should be handed in electronic form (zip archive file) to the lecturers, calling the file: surname_name_tel2007_8_project.zip. The archive must contain the project report (in pdf) and the related programs written in MATAB. Other accepted programming languages are SIAB, Octave, FORTRAN,, and BASI. 1

Solve the problem using the implicit Euler method and the Trapezoidal method for various choices of the time step and compare results with the exact solution. Which method is the most efficient? 4 Nonlinear problem The van der Pol problem originates from electronics and describes the behaviour of nonlinear vacuum tube circuits. The circuit scheme, designed by Balthazar van der Pol in the 1920 s, is given in Figure semiconductor R(I) external voltage inductor capacitor 4

This is an R loop, but with the passive resistor of Ohm s aw replaced by an active element which would pump energy into the circuit whenever the amplitude of the current falls below a certain level. Tasks: For µ = 1, 10, 1000, 10000 use the MATAB ODE solvers to compute the numerical solution in the interval [0, 2µ]. What happen when µ becomes large? Solve the problem using the implicit Euler method and the Trapezoidal method for various choices of the time step and compare results with the solution obtained with the MATAB ODE solvers. 5
