Three oems by Stehen Crane I I saw a man ursuing the horizon; Round and round they sed. I was disturbed at this; I accosted the man. Instrumentation Male Vocalist Range: A 2 A lute iccolo Notes: - The songs could be erormed individually, but or the sake o narrative should be erormed as a continuous cycle. - There should be no break between the irst and second song. The erormers may take as much time as necessary to situate themselves between the second and third movements though. "Glisses are between the two designated notes. A erormer may bend the itch as much as desired on either a bend or all without any designated destination itch. - Grace notes marked with a marcato accent should be attacked harshly but quickly and then continue onto the bottom note. -Temos given in brackets [q = c100] are meant to give the erormer an aroximate guideline o how ast or slow a section should be." Comlete Duration: 11 minutes rogram Note: Rare in oetry, Stehen Crane s (1871-1900) oems are oten very short in orm and contain either an extremely abstract or clear commentary. To lengthen the unolding o Crane s structures, I have chosen to add in lengthy solos and reeat certain ortions o the text in a way that I believe does not damage the overall comrehension o the text. While the three oems chosen or this cycle are not groued together by Crane, the musical gestures and material throughout is all derived rom the lute solo in the irst ourteen measures. The irst song is structured with a slow and ast section, reresenting a conlict between the narrator and a man. Slowing down urther but building in intensity, the second song contains extensive solo voice and iccolo arts which, uon an uncertain resolution lead to the astest third song eaturing a challenging vocal cadence. While all three songs could not be sung in succession, the unity o material and narrative will be better understood with a comlete erormance.
