SCIENCE (PAPER 1) Physics (Two hours) Answers to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the Question Paper. The time given at the head of the paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Section I is compulsory. Attempt any four questions from Section II. The intended marks for questions or parts of questions have been mentioned after each of them. SECTION I (40 marks) Attempt all questions from this section. Question 1: 2 X 5 = 10 marks a) i) What is meant by the term 'term'? ii) Write two requirements for selecting a unit for a physical quantity. b) i) State two precautions that you would observe while measuring a length correctly with the help of a metre scale. ii) How is the error due to damage of zero mark of metre scale eliminated? c) In an experiment to verify Ohm's law, a student increases the potential difference in steps of 0.2 volt from 0 to 1.6 volt and records the current in circuit to be 0, 0.1 A, 0.2 A, 0.3 A, 0.4 A, 0.5 A, 0.6 A, 0.7 A, 0.8 A. Plot a graph showing the variation of current with the potential difference. What is the shape of the curve obtained on the graph? d) How does the presentation of data in tabular form help us in analyzing them? e) i) Give an example of a motion in which the average velicity is zero but the average speed is not zero. ii) Give an example of a motion in which speed is constant but velocity is variable. Question 2: 2 X 5 = 10 marks a) Study Fig 'A' in the diagram sheet carefully. It shows a hydraulic machine in which the area of cross-section of the pistons X and Y are 4 cm 2 and 160 cm 2 respectively. i) Calculate the pressure at Y. ii) Name and state the principle which supports your answer in part (i). b) i) State Newton's second law of motion. ii) State the condition when Newton's second law takes the form F=ma. c) i) State two factors on which the upthrust experienced by a submerged

body depends. ii) A sphere of iron and another of wood, of the same radius are held under water. Compare the upthrust on the two spheres. d) i) A body is held immersed in a liquid. Name the two forces which act on the body. ii) Draw a diagram to show the above named forces. e) Study Fig B in the diagram sheet carefully. It shows a buoy in equilibrium i) Name the three forces that keep the buoy in equilibrium. ii) Copy the diagram and show the direction of each force in it. Question 3: 2 X 5 = 10 marks a) i) 'The coefficient of linear expansion of copper is 0.000017 C -1.' Explain the meaning of this statement. ii) State one application of the thermal expansion of metals. b) i) How is land breeze formed? ii) How is sea breeze formed? c) i) What is an ecosystem? ii) Name the source of energy for all ecosystems. d) Study Fig C in the diagram sheet carefully. It shows an incident ray and a normal to a plane mirror. i) Copy it and draw the reflected ray. What is the angle between the incident ray and the reflected ray? ii) If a light ray is incident normally on a plane mirror, what is its angle of incidence? e) i) What are the types of spherical mirrors? ii) Mention a difference between them. Question 4: 2 X 5 = 10 marks a) i) What is a resource? ii) Define natural resources. b) i) Name the two types of waves. ii) Define each type and mention a medium in which each of them can be produced. c) i) 'The electrification due to a positive charge is by the transfer of protons.' Is this statement true or false? Give a reason for your answer. ii) What is quantum nature of charge? d) i) What is meant by direct current? ii) Name two sources of direct current. e) i) Explain the meaning of the term 'magnetic induction'. ii) What role does it play in the attraction of a piece of iron by a magnet?

SECTION-II (40 marks) (Attempt any four questions from this section) Question 5: 3+3+4=10 marks a) Name any six fundamental units in S.I. system and write their symbols. b) Name the two types of tabular forms for the presentation of observations in an experiment. Give an example to distinguish between them. c) i) What is a seconds pendulum? ii) Write the numerical value of its frequency. iii) How much time does it take to oscillate from one extreme to the other? iv) If it is taken to a place where acceleration due to gravity is reduced to one-fourth, what change would be noticed in its time period? Give a reason for your answer. Question 6: 3+3+4=10 marks a) An object T is kep 60 cm in front of a plane mirror M. The mirror is now moved 25 cm away from the object. How does it affect the nature of the image? Explain with the help of a diagram and appropriate calculations. b) While using a concave mirror for shaving, where would the person's face be in relation to the focus of the mirror? Draw a diagram to show the position of the image as well as mention its characteristics. c) An object of height 2.5 cm is placed at a distance of 10 cm in front of a concave mirror of focal length 5 cm. Find, by graphical construction, the position, the height and the nature of the image formed. Question 7: 3+3+4=10 marks a) Study the velocity-time graph given in Fig D in the diagram sheet. It has three sections AB, BC and CD. i) From the study of this graph, state how the distance travelled in any section is determined. ii) Compare the distance travelled in section BC with the distance travelled in section AB. iii) Is the magnitude of acceleration higher or lower than that of retardation? Give a reason for your answer. b) A ball is thrown vertically upwards. It returns 6 s later. Taking g=10 ms 2, calculate the greatest height reached by the ball and the initial velocity of the ball. c) i) State Newton's universal law of gravitation. ii) Write an expression for the gravitational force between two bodies of masses m 1 and m 2 seperated by a distance r. iii) Is gravitational force attractive or repulsive? iv) Define gravitational constant according to your answer in part(ii). Question 8: 3+3+4=10 marks a) Study Fig E in the diagram sheet carefully. It shows a metal rod mounted on

an insulated stand. The metal disc of an uncharged electroscope touches end B of the metal rod. A negatively charged ebonite rod is brought near end A of the metal rod. i) What charge do the gold leaves have? ii) Do the leaves diverge or collapse? Give a reason for your answer. iii) If the metal disc of the electroscope is now earthed, what charge will the metal rod have? b) Study the given cases and answer the question that follows: Case 1: A cell is used to light a bulb. On closing the circuit, the bulb glows. Case 2: Two bulbs are joined in series with the same cell. On closing the circuit, the bulbs glow. Case 3: Two bulbs are joined in parallel with the same cell. On closing the circuit, the bulbs glow. How do the conditions in the above cases affect the glow of the bulb? Explain your answer with suitable reasons. c) i) What do you mean by 'magnetic field line'? ii) State two of its properties. iii) Why do they never intersect? iv) What do they indicate about the magnetic field at a given point? Question 9: 3+3+4=10 marks a) Explain the following: i) Application of fish plates ii) Coefficient of superficial expansion iii) A platinum wire is fixed in a glass rod. b) Explain any three unique features that a thermosflask has so as to minimize heat loss. c) Write a short note on the properties, applications, frequency range and speed of ultrasound in air. Also mention how it differs from ordinary sound. Question 10: 3+3+4=10 marks a) Compare between a simple barometer and an aneroid barometer according to the advantages that an aneroid barometer has over a simple barometer. b) i) Explain the following: * A balloon filled with hydrogen does rise up indefinitely. * Significance of plimsoll line drawn on a ship ii) Draw a neat labelled diagram of an acid battery hydrometer. c) i) A test tube loaded with lead shots floats to a mark X in water. The test tube alongwith the lead shots weighs 2.5 gf. When the test tube is floated in brine 5 gf of lead shots were added to make it float upto the mark X. Calculate the R.D. of brine. ii) A body experiences an upthrust of 200 gf in water. What will be the upthrust on the body in a liquid of relative density 0.8?

SECTION II (40 Marks) Attempt any four Questions from this Section Question 5 (a) Given diagram shows a screw gauge. In one measurement, the final position of the scale is as shown in the diagram. The circular scale has 50 divisions. [3] i. What is the least count of the screw gauge? ii. If 40th division of the circular scale coincides with the main scale line, what is the final reading? iii. What do you mean by back-lash error of a screw gauge? (b) In a physical balance, [3] i. State the principle on which it works. ii. What is measured by physical balance? iii. What is the role of a plumb line? iv. What is the role of base screws? v. State two requirements for a good balance. (c) A weather forecasting plastic balloon of volume 15 m 3 contains hydrogen of [4] density 0.09 kg/m 3. The volume of equipment carried by the balloon is negligible compared to its own volume. The mass of the empty balloon alone is 7.15 kg. The balloon is floating in the air of density 1.3 kg/m 3. Calculate: i. Mass of hydrogen in the balloon. ii. Mass of hydrogen and balloon. iii. If mass of equipment is x kg, write down the total mass of hydrogen, the balloon and the equipment. iv. Mass of air displaced by balloon. v. Using law of floatation, calculate the mass of equipment.

Question 6 (a) An electron moving with the speed of 5 10 4 m/s enters into an electric field and attains a uniform acceleration of 10 15 m/s 2 in the direction of motion. In how much time, will it attain a speed twice of its initial speed? In this time, how much distance will it cover? [3] (b) [4] i. Explain with the help of an example whether the velocity or the acceleration of a body give the direction of motion. ii. In the given figure, velocity-time graph of a body moving in a straight line is shown. Find the displacement and the distance travelled by the body in 6 s. (c) A body is projected vertically upwards with a velocity of 98 m/s. Find (i) the maximum height attained by the body and (ii) time taken by body to reach the highest point. Take g = 9.8 m/s 2 [3] Question 7 (a) [4] i. State Newton's third law of motion. ii. John pushes a wall with a force of 20 N towards the east, what force will be exerted by the wall on John? iii. In the following figure, a block of weight 10 N is hanging from a rigid support by a thread. Find: 1. The force exerted by block on the thread. 2. The force exerted by the thread on the block. (b) Mention three disadvantages of construction of large dams for generating hydroelectric power. [3] (c) A 3 kg stone is weighed first with a physical balance and then by a spring balance at the pole and at the equator. Where will the weight be maximum? [3]
