arxiv:09.4830v [math.dg] 25 Nov 2009 EXTENSION OF REILLY FORULA WITH APPLICATIONS TO EIGENVALUE ESTIATES FOR DRIFTING LAPLACINS LI A, SHENG-HUA DU Abstract. In this paper, we extend the Reilly formula for drifting Laplacian operator and apply it to study eigenvalue estimate for drifting Laplacian operators on compact Riemannian manifolds boundary. Our results on eigenvalue estimates extend previous results of Reilly and Choi and Wang. athematics Subject Classification (2000): 35J60, 53C2, 58J05 Keywords: eigenvalue estimate, Reilly formula, drifting Laplacian, Bakry-Emery-Ricci tensor. Introduction Among the important formulae in differential geometry, Reilly formula is an important tool used to give a lower bound of eigenvalues of Laplacian operator on a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. otivated by important work of G.Perelman [8], we study an extension of Reilly formula for drifting Laplacian operator associated with weighted measure and Bakry-Emery-Ricci tensor on a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. Let (, g) be a compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary. Let L = be the Laplacian operator on the compact Riemannian manifold (,g). Given h a smooth function on. We consider the elliptic operator with drifting L h = h associated with the weighted volume form dm = e h dv. We also call L h the h-laplacian on. Assume that () L h u = λu, Date: ay 26th, 2009. 2 LI A, SHENG-HUA DU with u 2 dm = and λ = u 2 dm. With the help of the Bochner formula for a smooth function f (see [6] and [20]) 2 L f 2 = D 2 f 2 +( f, Lf)+(Ric)( f, f), we can show the following Bochner formula for Bakry-Emery-Ricci tensor (see [5]) (2) 2 L h f 2 = D 2 f 2 +( f, L h f)+(ric+d 2 h)( f, f). We remark that the tensor Ric h := Ric+D 2 h is called Bakry-Emery- Ricci tensor which arise naturally from the study of Ricci solitons ([7]). 2 L h u 2 = D 2 u 2 λ u 2 +(Ric+D 2 h)( u, u). Recallthatthesecondfundamentalformof isdefinedbyh(x,y) = g( X ν,y) for the unit outward normal ν to the boundary. Using the integration by part on, we have the following extension of Reilly formula. Theorem. We have the following extension of Reilly formula (3) ( L h f 2 D 2 f 2 )dm = Ric h (,f f)dm+ ((Hf ν h f + f)f ν dm + (h( f, f) < f, f ν >)dm. Here and below, the symbol means the operation is taken on the induced metric on. We shall apply the above result to study the eigen-value estimate for drifting Laplacian operators on. We impose either Dirichlet boundary condition u = 0 on or the Newmann boundary condition u = 0, where ν is the outer unit normal to. The corresponding ν first eigen-value of the h-laplacian is denoted by λ D or λ N respectively.
Theorem 2. Assume that EXTENSION OF REILLY FORULA 3 (4) Ric+D 2 h Dh 2 nz +A for some A > 0 and z > 0. () If the modified mean curvature H h ν of is non-negative, then n(z +)A λ (n(z +) ). (2) If is convex, that is, the second fundamental form (defined by h(x,y) = g( X ν,y)) is non-negative, then λ n(z +)A (n(z +) ). We can also prove the following result, which generalize a result of Choi and Wang [4]. Theorem 3. Let ( n,g) be a closed orientable manifold with Ric h (n )K > 0. Let h be a smooth function on. Let P be a embedded minimal h-hypersurface dividing into two submanifolds and 2 (i.e., H = h ν where ν is the unit out normal to ). Then for the drifting Laplacian h := P h P, λ ( h P ) (n )K. 2 This paper is organized as follows. In section 2 we prove Theorem, and Theorem 2 is proved in section 3. Theorem 3 is proved in section 4. We prove Theorem below. 2. Proof of Theorem Proof. We shall integra the formula (2). Choose a local orthonormal frame fields {e j } such that e n = ν on the boundary. Note that L h f 2 dm = f i f ij ν j dm, 2 and ( f, L h f)dm = L h ff j ν j dm L h f 2 dm.
4 LI A, SHENG-HUA DU ( L h f 2 D 2 f 2 )dm = Ric h ( f f)dm+ (f n h f f i f in )dm. Recall that h f = f h f. f n h f f i f in = f n h f + jj f n f j f jn ). j<n(f Now j<nf jj = j<n (e j (e j f) ( ej e j )f) = j<n( e j e j )f ( ej e j )f)+ f For j < n, = Hf + f. f jn = f nj = e j (e n f) ( ej e n )f = e j (f n ) k<nh jk f k. f j f jn =< f, f n > h jk f j f k. j<n Putting all these together we have ( L h f 2 D 2 f 2 )dm = Ric h ( f, f)dm+ ((Hf n h f + f)f n dm+ (h( f, f) < f, f ν >)dm. The result follows.
EXTENSION OF REILLY FORULA 5 3. Proof of Theorem 2 The idea in the proof of Theorem 2 is similar to the one used by Reilly in [9] (see also [8]). We Use the extension of Reilly formula to prove Theorem 2 below. Proof. Let L h u+λu = h u+λu = 0. We shall integrate the extension of Reilly formula (3). Note that for any z > 0. So, we have (a+b) 2 a2 z + b2 z ( u) 2 = (λu+ h u) 2 λ2 u 2 (5) ( L h u 2 D 2 u 2 )dm z + h u 2 z ( λ2 zu 2 z + + f u 2 )dm. z Note that for both Dirichlet and Newmann Problems, we have ((Hu n h u+ u)u n dm+ (h( u, u) < u, u ν >)dm = ((Hu 2 n h nu 2 n )dm+ h( f, f)dm 0. In the last step we have used our assumption on the geometry of. Then by our assumption (4) we have (6) Ric h ( u, u)dm ( Dh 2 +A) u 2 dm. nz Putting (5) and (6) together we have. and The result is proved. 0 λ λ 2 n(z +) λ2 +Aλ n(z +)A (n(z +) ).
6 LI A, SHENG-HUA DU 4. Proof of Theorem 3 Suppose h Pu+λu = 0. Without loss of generality we may assume that h( P u, P u)dm 0. Define f on such that h f = 0, on with the boundary condition f = u on. By Theorem we have 0 ( D 2 f 2 )dm = Ric h ( f, f)dm+ (Hf n h f + P u)f n dm + ( < P f, P f ν >)dm. Note that (Hf n h f+ P u)f n dm = ((H h n )f n P h P f+ h P u)f ndm = (( ν h H) n f +λu)f n dm = λ uf n dm, and ( < P f, P f ν >)dm = ( h P u,f n)dm = λ uf n dm. Compute 2 uf n dm = (f 2 ) n dm = h f 2 dm = 2 f 2 dm. Using our assumption we have 0 ((n )K 2λ) f 2 dm. Since f 2 dm > 0, we get λ (n )K. 2
