CDF Run II Physics Program Very rich and broad physics program, probing a wide range of processes, whose cross sections span ~10 orders of magnitude: study of the interactions of quarks and gluons heavy flavor physics properties of W and Z bosons properties of the top quark searches for the SM Higgs boson direct searches for physics beyond the Standard Model This talk will focus only on some of the most recent results from CDF... Check http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/internal/physics/ for more! 2

Tevatron The Tevatron Collider Circumference 6.28 km ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV Run I (1987-1995) Run II (since 2001) Surpassed design luminosity ~8 fb-1 on tape per experiment Peak Luminosity ~4.1032 cm-2sec-1 3

CDF Detector Multipurpose collider detector Large international collaboration, 600+ members Silicon tracking Large radius drift chamber (r=1.4m) 1.4 T solenoid Projective calorimetry ( η < 3.5) Muon chambers ( η < 1.0) 4

Diphotons Crucial for H->γγ http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/qcd/diphoxsec_2010/public_diphoton.html Notoriously difficult to calculate EM radiation from quarks and initial protons various production mechanisms Selection in 5.4 fb-1: two photons above 17, 15 GeV η <1 5

W+charm Probing strange PDF http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/qcd/wcharm_2010/publicweb/publicwebslte.html Exploit the lepton charge correlation Select events with W decaying leptonically in 4.3 fb-1: tight lepton, large MET, 1 jet W charge from lepton c charge from soft electron in the jet axis Signal is evinced from an excess of events in wich the charge of the lepton from the W boson decay and the charge of the soft lepton are opposite in sign: Nobs = NOS - NSS 6

CP Violating phase βs - I http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/bottom/100513.blessed-bsjpsiphi_5.2fb/ SMALL IN Standard Model Processes of new physics can add new phase to β S Key elements of the analysis: Observation of large CP phase = sign of new physics! Angular distribution of J/Ψ and Φ mesons to identify CP-odd and CP-even final states Identify the flavor of the BS0 or anti-bs0 meson at the BS0 J/Ψ ( μ+μ-) Φ ( K+K-) reconstruction (ANN) time of production by means of flavor tagging (no 4-fold ambiguity) Unbinned maximum likelihood fit to extract βs- ΔΓ = ΓΗ ΓL 7

CP Violating phase βs - II Results updated to 5.2 fb-1 SM consistency 0.8σ 68% and 95% confidence regions in the ( βσ, ΔΓ ) plane 8

Top Mass Measurement http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/top/2010/mass/mtm3_p25_public/ Lepton + jets sample with 4.8 fb-1 matrix element based measurement neural network for background discrimination in situ W->jj jet energy scale (JES) calibration Mtop = 172.8 ± 0.7 (stat) ± 0.6 (JES) ± 0.8 (syst) GeV/c 2 = 172.8 ± 1.3 (total) GeV/c 2 Precision of this measurement is comparable with 2009 Tevatron combination! 10

Top Mass combination http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/top/2010/mass/tevcombination_july/ Mtop=173.3±1.1GeV/c2 0.6% precision Approaching <1GeV uncertainty Way better than simple scaling with L Entering precision era 11

Top-Antitop mass difference http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/top/2010/mass/tmt_massdiff_p28_public/ Mass difference would imply CPT-violation Measured in a sample of 5.6 fb -1 of lepton + jets events For each event, reconstruct ΔM reco = Mtop - Mantitop and fit the distribution to MC templates with different input Δ Mtop Δ Mtop = -3.3 ± 1.7 GeV/c2 0.0 GeV/c2 signal -4.0 GeV/c2 signal 12

Top Quark Width http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/top/2010/tprop/tmt_width_p23_public/ Short lifetime of top quark decay results in large width ΓSM~1.5 GeV Deviation from SM could indicate presence of t bh+ etc. Different width would change top mass line shape use mass templates from MC Method uses same technique from top mass analysis Dominating source of systematic uncertainty becomes jet resolution Lepton+jets (4.3 fb-1): Γtop < 7.6 GeV at 95% C.L. 13

Top Antitop Spin correlations http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/top/2009/tprop/lj_spincorr/ Top spins are correlated only if top lifetime is short enough Spin-spin correlation is observable in the top quark decay products Lepton +jets sample with 4.3 fb 1: exploit the helicity angles of lepton, d, and b quarks in a simultaneous likelihood fit Opposite spin fraction: fo= 0.80 ± 0.25 (stat) ± 0.08 (syst) Spin correlation coefficient: K= 0.60 ± 0.50 (stat) ± 0.16 (syst) 14

Forward Backward Asymmetry http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/physics/new/top/2010/tprop/afb/ QCD predicts small asimmetry effect Measure A in lab frame FB Unfold to parton level using migration matrix Lepton + jets sample with 5.3 fb 1 15
