SPALEVIĆ This paper is dedicated to Professor Walter Gautschi on the occasion of his 75th birthday Abstract. We study the kernels of the remainder term R n,s(f) of Gauss- Turán quadrature formulas n s f(t)w(t) dt = A i,ν f (i) (τ ν) + R n,s(f) (n N; s N ) ν= i= for classes of analytic functions on elliptical contours with foci at ±, when the weight w is one of the special Jacobi weights w (α,β) (t) = ( t) α ( + t) β (α = β = /; α = β = / + s; α = /, β = / + s; α = / + s, β = /). We investigate the location on the contour where the modulus of the kernel attains its maximum value. Some numerical examples are included.. Introduction Quadrature formulae with multiple nodes appeared more than years after the famous Gaussian quadratures. Starting from the Hermite interpolation formula and taking any system of n distinct nodes {τ,...,τ n } with arbitrary multiplicities m ν (ν =,...,n), Chakalov [] in 9 obtained such a general quadrature, which is exact for all algebraic polynomials of degree at most m + +m n. Taking all the multiplicities to be equal, Turán [] was the first who introduced the corresponding quadrature formula of Gaussian type. Let w be an integrable weight function on the interval (,). In this paper we consider the Gauss-Turán quadrature formula with multiple nodes, (.) f(t)w(t)dt = n s A i,ν f (i) (τ ν ) + R n,s (f), ν= i= where A i,ν = A (n,s) i,ν, τ ν = τ ν (n,s) (i =,,...,s; ν =,...,n), which is exact for all algebraic polynomials of degree at most (s + )n. G. V. MILOVANOVIĆ AND M. M. SPALEVIĆ must be the zeros of the (monic) polynomial π n,s (t) which minimizes the integral Φ(a,a,...,a n ) = π n (t) s+ w(t)dt, where π n (t) = t n + a n t n + + a t + a. In order to minimize Φ we must have the following orthogonality conditions (.) π n (t) s+ t k w(t)dt =, k =,,...,n. R Polynomials π n = π n,s which satisfy this type of orthogonality (.) (so called power orthogonality ) are known as s-orthogonal (or s-self associated) polynomials with respect to the measure dλ(t) = w(t)dt. For s = this reduces to the standard case of orthogonal polynomials. Several classes of s-orthogonal polynomials, as well as their generalizations known as σ-orthogonal polynomials, were investigated mainly by Italian mathematicians, e.g., Ossicini [6, 7], Ghizzetti and Ossicini [, 3], Ossicini and Rosati [9, 3, 3], Gori Nicolò-Amati [5] (see the survey paper [] for details and references). A generalization of the Gauss-Turán quadrature formula (.) to rules having nodes with arbitrary multiplicities was derived independently by Chakalov [3, ] and Popoviciu [36]. Important theoretical progress on this subject was made by Stancu [, ] (see also [3]). Methods for constructing the nodes τ ν and/or coefficients A i,ν in the Gauss- Turán quadratures, as well as in the generalized Chakalov-Popoviciu-Stancu formulas, can be found in [,,, 3,, 5, 39,, 3, 5]. The remainder term in formulas with multiple nodes was studied by Chakalov [3], Ionescu [9], Ossicini [7], Pavel [3, 33, 3], and Milovanović and Spalević [5]. The case of holomorphic functions f in the Gauss-Turán quadrature (.) was considered by Ossicini and Rosati [9]. In this paper we consider the remainder term R n,s (f) of Gauss-Turán quadrature formulas for classes of analytic functions on elliptical contours, when the weight function w in (.) is one of the special Jacobi weights w (α,β) (t) = ( t) α ( + t) β, with parameters α = β = ; α = β = + s; α =, β = + s; α = + s, β =, where s N. The reason for these choices is explained near the end of Section. The paper is organized as follows. The remainder term of Gauss-Turán formulas for analytic functions and some properties of the kernels in the contour representations of the remainder terms are given in Section. The cases of elliptic contours with foci at the points ±, when w is any one of the four Jacobi weight functions, are studied in Section 3. More precisely, the location on the contour where the modulus of the kernel attains its maximum value is investigated. Some numerical examples are included.. The remainder term in Gauss-Turán quadrature formulae Let Γ be a simple closed curve in the complex plane surrounding the interval [,] and D be its interior. If the integrand f is analytic in D and continuous on D, R
ERROR BOUNDS FOR GAUSS-TURÁN QUADRATURE FORMULAE 3 then the remainder term R n,s (f) in (.) admits the contour integral representation (cf. [9]) (.) R n,s (f) = K n,s (z)f(z)dz. πi The kernel is given by (.) K n,s (z) = where (.3) n,s (z) = Γ n,s (z), z / [,], [π n,s (z)] s+ w(t) [π n,s(t)] s+ z t dt, n N, and π n,s (t) is the monic s-orthogonal polynomial with respect to the measure dλ(t) = w(t)dt on (,). For s =, the formulas (.) and (.) reduce to the corresponding formulas for Gaussian quadratures. An alternative representation for K n,s (z) is ( ) K n,s (z) = R n,s = z w(t) n z t dt s ν= i= i!a i,ν (z τ ν ) i+. Put N = (s + )n and n t N = (t τ ν ) s+ + q(t) = π n,s (t) s+ + q(t) (q P N ), ν= where P m denotes the set of all algebraic polynomials of degree at most m. Expanding the integrand of (.3) in descending powers of z, and using (.) and R n,s (t N ) = R n,s (π s+ n,s ) = π n,s (t) dµ(t) = π n,s dµ, where dµ(t) = π n,s (t) s w(t)dt, we conclude that K n,s (z) = R n,s(t N ) z N+ + = π n,s ( dµ z N+ + C z + C ) z +, where C,C,... are constants. The integral representation (.) leads to the error estimate (.) R n,s (f) l(γ) ( ) ( ) max π K n,s(z) max f(z), z Γ z Γ where l(γ) is the length of the contour Γ. We thus have to study the magnitude of K n,s (z) on Γ. It seems that the first unified approach described above was taken by Donaldson and Elliott [5]. They applied it to several kinds of interpolatory and noninterpolatory quadrature rules. Error bounds for Gaussian quadratures of analytic functions were studied by Gautschi and Varga [] (see also []). In particular, they investigated some cases with special Jacobi weights with parameters ±/ (Chebyshev weights). The cases of Gaussian rules with Bernstein-Szegő weight functions and with some symmetric weights including especially the Gegenbauer weight were studied by Peherstorfer [35] and Schira [3], respectively. Some of the results have been extended to Gauss-Radau and Gauss-Lobatto formulas (cf. Gautschi [6], Gautschi and Li [7], Schira [37], Hunter and Nikolov []).
G. V. MILOVANOVIĆ AND M. M. SPALEVIĆ In the sequel we give some properties of the kernel (.). Lemma.. Let the kernel K n,s (z) be given by (.) and (.3). Then, for each z C \ [,], (.5) K n,s (z) = K n,s (z) Moreover, if the weight function in (.) is even, i.e., w( t) = w(t), then (.6) K n,s ( z) = K n,s (z). Proof. According to (.) it is clear that K n,s (z) = n,s (z) [π n,s (z)] s+ = K n,s(z), implying (.5). If w is an even function, i.e., w( t) = w(t), we have π n,s ( z) = ( ) n π n,s (z) and i.e., so that n,s (z) = n,s (z) = ( ) n(s+) K n,s ( z) = w(t) [π n,s(t)] s+ z t dt = w(t) [π n,s(t)] s+ z + t w( t) [π n,s( t)] s+ z + t dt, dt = ( ) n(s+) n,s ( z), n,s ( z) [π n,s ( z)] s+ = ( )n(s+) n,s (z) ( ) n(s+) [π n,s (z)] = K n,s(z) = K s+ n,s (z). Thus, in this case we get (.6). A particularly interesting case is the Chebyshev measure dλ (t) = ( t ) / dt. In 93, S. Bernstein [] showed that the monic Chebyshev polynomial ˆTn (t) = T n (t)/ n minimizes all integrals of the form π n (t) k+ t dt (k ). This means that the Chebyshev polynomials T n are s-orthogonal on (,) for each s. Ossicini and Rosati [9] found three other measures dλ k (t) (k =,3,) for which the s-orthogonal polynomials can be identified as Chebyshev polynomials of the second, third, and fourth kind: U n, V n, and W n, which are defined by U n (cos θ) = sin(n + )θ, V n (cos θ) = cos(n + )θ sin θ cos θ, W n (cos θ) = sin(n + )θ sin θ, respectively (cf. Gautschi and Notaris [9]). However, these measures depend on s, dλ (t) = ( t ) /+s dt, dλ 3 (t) = ( + t)/+s ( t) / dt, dλ (t) = ( t)/+s dt. ( + t) / It is easy to see that W n ( t) = ( ) n V n (t), so that in the investigation it is sufficient to study only first three Jacobi measures dλ k (t), k =,,3. Recently, Ossicini, Martinelli, and Rosati [] have proved the convergence as n + (alternatively, as s + ), of the Gauss-Turán quadrature formula
ERROR BOUNDS FOR GAUSS-TURÁN QUADRATURE FORMULAE 5 (.) for the cases dλ (t) and dλ (t), on the basis of results from [9], by taking f to be a holomorphic function on int Γ, where the contour Γ is an ellipse with foci at ± and sum of semiaxes >. Using estimates obtained for R n,s (f), they proved the convergence and rate of convergence of the quadrature formulae, R n,s (f) = O ( ρ n(s+)), n +. 3. The maximum modulus of the kernel on confocal ellipses In this section we take as the contour Γ an ellipse with foci at the points ± and sum of semiaxes >, { (3.) E = z C: z = ( e iθ + e iθ) }, θ < π. When, then the ellipse shrinks to the interval [,], while with increasing it becomes more and more circle-like. Since the ellipse E has length l(e ) = ε E(ε), where ε is the eccentricity of E, i.e., ε = /( + ), and E(ε) = π/ ε sin θ dθ is the complete elliptic integral of the second kind, the estimate (.) reduces to (3.) R n,s (f) E(ε) ( ) max K n,s (z) f, ε = πε z E +, where f = max f(z). As we can see, the bound on the right in (3.) is a z E function of, so that it can be optimized with respect to >. In this section we study the magnitude of K n,s (z) on the contour E. More precisely, for the measures dλ k (k =,,3) defined at the end of the previous section, we investigate the locations on the confocal ellipses where the modulus of the corresponding kernels attain their maximum values. Because of (.5), i.e., symmetry with respect to the real axis, the consideration of K n,s (z), when z = ( e iθ + e iθ) E, may be restricted to the interval θ π. Moreover, if the weight function is even, as in the cases of dλ (t) and dλ (t) (symmetry with respect to both coordinate axes), the consideration may be restricted to the first quarter of E, i.e., to the interval θ π/ (see (.6)). In the sequel we give explicit representations of the kernels K n,s (ν) on the ellipse E for the measures dλ ν (t), ν =,,3, and discuss the maximum points on this ellipse in order to get the exact value of max K n,s(z) (ν) or some estimate. z E 3.. The measure dλ (t) = ( t ) / dt. According to (.3), in this case we have n,s (z) = ( t ) / [ n T n (t)] s+ z t dt, n N, z / [,],
6 G. V. MILOVANOVIĆ AND M. M. SPALEVIĆ where T n (t) is the Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind of degree n. By substituting t = cos θ we obtain n,s (z) = ( n)(s+) π = ( n)(s+) s π [cos nθ] s+ z cos θ z cos θ dθ ( ) s + cos(s + k)nθ dθ, k where for the transformation of [cosnθ] s+ we used a formula from [9, p. 3]. Now, the kernel (.) has the form ( ) s + π s cos(s + k)nθ dθ k K n,s(z) () z cos θ = [T n (z)] s+. Furthermore, using [7, Eq. 3.63.], one finds (see also [, p. 76]) π ( (3.3) z m z ), m N, and we obtain K () n,s(z) = cos mθ z cos θ dθ = s π z π z ( ) s + (z z ) (s+ k)n k [T n (z)] s+. ERROR BOUNDS FOR GAUSS-TURÁN QUADRATURE FORMULAE 9 where M = E(ε) f ( + )/( ). On the basis of (3.) we conclude that the corresponding Gauss-Turán quadrature formulae converge if s is a fixed integer and n +, since lim R n,s(f) =. n + Moreover, we conclude that R n,s (f) = O( n(s+) ), when n +. Assuming that /( n n ) <, we see that also R n,s (f), when s + and n is fixed. This condition is satisfied if n n >, i.e., if n > +. The same conclusion was obtained in [, Eq. (5.5)]. Remark 3.. Recently, Gori and Micchelli [6] have introduced for each n a class of weight functions defined on [, ] for which explicit Gauss-Turán quadrature formulas can be found for all s. Indeed, these classes of weight functions have the peculiarity that the corresponding s-orthogonal polynomials, of the same degree, are independent of s. This class includes certain generalized Jacobi weight functions w n,µ (t) = U n (t)/n µ+ ( t ) µ, where U n (cos θ) = sinnθ/sin θ (Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind) and µ >. In this case, the Chebyshev polynomials T n appear as s-orthogonal polynomials. Since U n (cos θ) = sin nθ sin θ n, i.e., U n (t)/n µ+ ( t ) µ+/, by arguing, for example, in an analogous way as in [] we can obtain in this case that lim R n,s(f) =, under the previous s + condition n > +, where n is a fixed positive integer. 3.. The measure dλ (t) = ( t ) s+/ dt, s N. In this case we have n,s (z) = ( t ) /+s [ n U n (t)] s+ dt, z t n N, z / [,], where U n (t) is the Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind for the weight function w(x) = t, for which U n (cos θ) = By substituting t = cos θ we obtain n,s (z) = n(s+) π = n(s+) s π sin(n + )θ. sin θ sin θ z cos θ [sin(n + )θ]s+ dθ sinθ z cos θ ( ) s + ( ) s+k sin(s + k)(n + )θ dθ, k where for the transformation of [sin(n+)θ] s+ we used a formula from [9, p. 3]. By using the well-known representation [ U n (z) = (z + z ) n+ (z z ) n+], z the substitution z = (u + u ) and the formula (see [7, Eq. 9.63.3]) π sin(m + )θ sin θ z cos θ dθ = π u m+, m N,

The sum on the right-hand side we denote by Z n,s(u) () and rewrite it in the following form ( ) s + (3.) Z n,s(u) () = ( ) k u (n+)k, s + k + so that i.e., K () n,s(z) = (3.) If n is odd, then Z n,s( e () iθ ) (a n+ cos(n + )θ) Z n,s(i ) (), θ π/, / (a n+ ) / with equality for θ = π/. Proof. First we note that (3.3) Z () n,s(u) = where ζ n,s (u): = = [(s )/] ν= ( ν+ k=ν ) { if s is odd, u (n+)s as well as ζ n,s ( e iθ ) = ζ n,s (i ). ERROR BOUNDS FOR GAUSS-TURÁN QUADRATURE FORMULAE we see that S ν ( e iθ ) = ( s + ) ν(n+) s + ν + α (n+) cos(n + )θ + α (n+). Now, we consider the quotient F ν (,θ,n): = S ν ( e iθ ) (a n+ cos(n + )θ) /, when n is odd, and for θ π/ we wish to prove the inequality F ν (,θ,n) F ν (,π/,n), i.e., (3.5) i.e., S ν ( e iθ ) (a n+ cos(n + )θ) S ν (i ), θ π/. / (a n+ ) / Using the previous facts, inequality (3.5) reduces to (a n+ )( q cos(n + )θ + q ) (a n+ cos(n + )θ)( q), ( cos(n + )θ)( qa n+ + q ), where q = α (n+). Using (3.6), we find qa n+ + q = ( α)( α (n+) ), so that the previous inequality becomes (3.6) ( cos(n + )θ)( α)( α (n+) ). Since cos(n + )θ, >, and α < (see (3.)) we conclude that inequality (3.6) is true. This also proves inequality (3.5). According to (3.3) and (3.5) we have Z () n,s( e iθ ) (a n+ cos(n + )θ) / [(s )/] ν= F ν (,θ,n) + ζ n,s ( e iθ ) (a n+ cos(n + )θ) / [(s )/] ν= S ν (i ) (a n+ ) + ζ n,s (i ) / (a n+ ) / = with equality holding for θ = π/. Z () n,s(i ) (a n+ ) /, Theorem 3.. If dλ(t) = ( t ) s+/ dt on (,), s N, and n is odd, then ( (3.7) max K n,s(z) () i = K n,s () ( )), z E i.e., the maximum of K () n,s(z) (n odd) on E is attained on the imaginary axis. Proof. On the basis of numerical experiments a similar conjecture for K n,s(z) (3) on the ellipse E as Conjecture 3. can be stated. A useful estimate of (3.) can be given by using the fact that Z (3) Z (3) n,s( ) < Z (3) n,s() = s and the inequality (see [, p. 79]) n,s( e iθ ) a + cos θ (a cos θ)(a n+ + cos(n + )θ) a + (a )(a n+ + ), θ π, which is equivalent to a + cos θ (a cos θ)(a n+ + cos(n + )θ) a + (a )(a n+ + ), θ π, because of a = a and a cos θ = (a cos θ)/(a + cos θ). In this way, we get K n,s(z) (3) π ( ) s a + (a + cos θ), n+/ (a )(a n+ + ) a n+ + cos(n + )θ i.e., ( ) s (3.) K n,s(z) (3) π( + ) ( / + / ) n( )( n+ + n, ) n+/ n /
