GEOGRAPHY Map Skills Mrs. Pere ~ 2013
WHAT IS A GLOBE? A globe is a model of the Earth. North Pole Equator South Pole
WHAT IS A MAP? A map is a flat drawing of a place.
THE IMPORTANT PARTS OF A MAP 1. The title tells what the map is about 2. The map key it has symbols that represent real things in that place 3. The compass rose shows directions
The objects on a map key are represented by symbols that stand for real things. Different maps have keys with different symbols. The symbols depend upon what the map is about. there are some common symbols that are used on all maps. The symbol below represents a capital, and can be found on most mapsl.
Title The United States of America Map Key Compass Rose capital
The Compass Rose shows directions. Cardinal Directions shown on the compass rose are: North South East West They are abbreviated on the map by showing the first letter of each direction as a capital letter.
The Intermediate Directions are in between the Cardinal Directions on the compass rose. Intermediate Directions: Northeast Northwest Southeast Southwest NW SW NE SE The intermediate Directions are also shortened using a capital letter.
DIFFERENT KINDS OF MAPS Grid Map Landform Map
A grid map uses a set of boxes, or grid, to locate a place. The boxes on the grid map have letters and numbers. To locate a place on the grid map, move your finger to the right, then up.
A landform maps show different kinds of landforms, such as mountains, rivers, plains, etc. in the area that is shown in the map. Look at the key to figure out what landforms are in the map.
Lines of Latitude Lines of latitude are the horizontal lines on a map that stretches from the east to the west. 0 degrees latitude is the equator. They are imaginary lines, and the most famous imaginary line line of latitude - is the Equator. Major lines of latitude are shown in the diagram.
Lines of Longitude Vertical mapping lines on Earth are lines of longitude, known as "meridians". One simple way to visualize this might be to think about having hula hoops cut in half, vertically positioned with one end at the North Pole and the other at the South Pole.
Every location on earth has a global address. Because the address is in numbers, people can communicate about location no matter what language they might speak. A global address is given as two numbers called coordinates. The two numbers are a location's latitude number and its longitude number ("Lat/Long").
WHAT IS A CONTINENT? A continent is a large land mass. There are seven continents in our world North America South America Europe Asia Africa Australia Antarctica
WHAT IS AN OCEAN? An ocean is a large body of salt water that covers the Earth. The Earth is about 75% covered by salt water. The five (yes, five) oceans are: Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean Arctic Ocean Indian Ocean And Southern Ocean (also called Antarctic Ocean)
