Masurmnt of Longitudinal Singl-Spin Asymmtry for ± Production in Polarizd Proton+Proton Collisions at STAR arxiv:191.1734v1 [hp-x] 7 Jan 219, for th STAR collaboration Ky Laboratory of Particl Physics and Particl Irradiation (MoE), Institut of Frontir and Intrdisciplinary Scinc, Shandong Univrsity, Qingdao, Shandong 266237, China E-mail: xuqh@sdu.du.cn Th sa quark contribution to th nuclon spin is an important pic for a complt undrstanding of th nuclon spin structur. Th production of bosons in longitudinally polarizd p + p collisions at RHIC provids an uniqu prob for th sa quark polarization, through th parityviolating singl-spin asymmtry, A L. At th STAR xprimnt, bosons can b ffctivly dtctd through th lptonic dcay channl ν with th Elctromagntic Calorimtrs and Tim Projction Chambr at mid-rapidity. Th prvious STAR masurmnts of A L for boson production from datasts takn in 211 and 212 hav providd significant constraints on th hlicity distribution functions of ū and d quarks. In 213 th STAR xprimnt collctd p + p data with an intgratd luminosity of about 25 pb at s = 51 GV with an avrag bam polarization of about 56%, which is about thr tims th total intgratd luminosity of prvious yars. Th final A L rsults from th STAR 213 data sampl ar prsntd and ar also combind with prvious 211+212 rsults. Th comparison with thortical xpctations suggsts a flavor asymmtry with ū(x) > d(x) for sa quark hlicity distributions with.5 < x <.25. 23rd Intrnational Spin Physics Symposium - SPIN218-1-14 Sptmbr, 218 Frrara, Italy Spakr. c Copyright ownd by th author(s) undr th trms of th Crativ Commons Attribution-NonCommrcial-NoDrivativs 4. Masurmnt of A L for ± boson in Polarizd p + p Collisions at STAR Th nuclon spin structur in trms of its parton constitunts is a fundmntal qustion in QCD and has bn studid xtnsivly both in thory and in xprimnt sinc th 198s. Th quark spin has bn found to contribut about 3% of th nuclon spin and th valnc quark hlicity distributions ar wll dtrmind at intrmdiat x from DIS xprimnts. Howvr, th uncrtaintis on th sa quark hlicity distributions ar still rlativly larg [1]. Th production of +( ) bosons in p + p collisions with on bam longitudinally polarizd provids an uniqu tool to accss sa quark and valnc quark hlicity distributions without th involvmnt of hadron fragmntation as in th smi-inclusiv DIS procss [2, 3, 4]. Th longitudinal singl-spin asymmtry A L for boson production in p + p collisions is dfind as: A L () σ(p +p X) σ(p p X) σ(p + p X) + σ(p p X), (1) whr σ(p ± p X) is th cross sction with a hlicity positiv/ngativ proton bam, with subscripts ± hr dnoting th hlicity. As th production of bosons violats parity maximally, th abov A L quation for ± can b rwrittn as follows at lading ordr: A + L A = u(x 1) d(x 2 ) + d(x 1 )u(x 2 ) u(x 1 ) d(x 2 ) + d(x 1 )u(x 2 ), (2) L = d(x 1)ū(x 2 ) + ū(x 1 )d(x 2 ). (3) d(x 1 )ū(x 2 ) + ū(x 1 )d(x 2 ) A + L approachs d/ d whn y, bcaus th valnc quark usually carris a much largr momntum fraction than a sa quark, and th rapidity along th polarizd proton bam is dfind as positiv. Similarly, A L approachs ū/ū whn y. In th xprimnt, ± can b dtctd via th lptonic channl ν with th kinmatics of th dcay lpton alon. A thortical framwork that dscribs inclusiv lpton production from boson dcay has bn dvlopd, so th masurmnts of A L vrsus th lpton rapidity can b compard with thortical prdictions [5, 6]. Th prvious data from dcays at RHIC [7, 8, 9, 1, 11] provid nw constraints on sa quark polarizations through th QCD global analyss of xprimntal data, which vn indicat th xistnc of a flavor asymmtry in th polarization of th lightquark sa in th proton for parton momntum fractions,.5 < x <.25 [12]. In this contribution, w rport nw masurmnts of th singl-spin asymmtris for ± bosons in longitudinallypolarizd p + p collisions at s = 51 GV from th STAR xprimnt [13], which wr finalizd shortly aftr th confrnc. Th data wr rcordd in 213 by STAR and corrspond to an intgratd luminosity of about 25 pb with an avrag bam polarization of about 56%. At th STAR xprimnt, th ν vnts ar charactrizd by an isolatd ± with a sizabl transvrs nrgy, ET, dpositd in th Elctromagntic Calorimtr, which paks nar half th mass, which is rfrrd to as th Jacobian pak. Th nutrino from dcay is undtctd, which lads to a larg missing transvrs nrgy that appars as an imbalanc in th p T sum of all th rconstructd final stat particls. In contrast, th p T vctor is wll balancd for background vnts such as Z/γ + and QCD di-jt or multi-jt vnts. Th ky slction cuts for signals ar thus basd on th lpton isolation and p T imbalanc faturs. Th charg sparation is don using th Tim Projction Chambr (TPC), which covrs th full azimuth and a psudorapidity rang of 1

First, a chargd track with high transvrs momntum (p T > 1 GV) was chosn, thn an EMC nrgy clustr was rconstructd from 2 2 calorimtr towrs pointd to by th xtrapolatd track. Th clustr nrgy ET 2 2 in ths towrs is assignd to th candidat lctron. Thn, furthr stags of isolation cuts ar implmntd, with slight diffrncs btwn BEMC and EEMC rgions. Th transvrs nrgy ratio in this 2 2 clustr ovr a surrounding 4 4 clustr is rquird to b largr than 95% (96%) in th BEMC (EEMC) rgion. It is furthr rquird that th candidat lctron carry a larg fraction (largr than 88% for both BEMC and EEMC) of th nrgy in th nar-sid con with radius R =.7, whr R = φ 2 + η 2. Aftr that, a p T -balanc variabl is calculatd in trms of th p T sum of th lctron candidat and th rconstructd jts outsid an isolation con around th lctron track with a radius R =.7. Th projction of p T -balanc to th dirction of th candidat lctron (namd signd p T -balanc ), is rquird to b largr than 14 GV (2 GV) for th BEMC (EEMC) rgion. In addition, th total transvrs nrgy in th azimuthally away sid is rquird to b lss than 11 GV to furthr supprss di-jt backgrounds in th BEMC rgion whn on jt loss a sizabl fraction of momntum du to dtctor ffcts. For th EEMC rgion, anothr isolation ratio from th nrgy dposit in th EEMC showr maximum dtctor (ESMD) is also usd (R ESMD >.7) [13]. Thr ar svral contributions to th rsidual background vnts undr th signal pak, as shown in Fig. 1. In addition, th boson can dcay to τ + ν and τ can furthr dcay to an lctron and a nutrino, though w will not distinguish this fd down contribution. To stimat th Z/γ and τ contributions, th MC vnts 2

Th QCD background is first stimatd using th xisting EEMC dtctor for th uninstrumntd accptanc rgion on th opposit sid of th collision point and th rst is stimatd using a data-drivn mthod [8]. In Fig. 1, th distributions for + and ar shown for diffrnt psudorapidity intrvals covrd by th BEMC, whr th black histograms ar th raw signal and th colord histograms ar for diffrnt background contributions mntiond abov. Th rsidual background fraction is found to b a fw prcnt and is corrctd in th dtrmination of th singl-spin asymmtry for signals, as dtaild in Rfs. [8, 13]. Th longitudinal singl-spin asymmtry A L is xtractd using th following quation: A L () = 1 1 N + /l + N /l, (4) β P N + /l + + N /l whr β quantifis th dilution du to rsidual background, P is th bam polarization, N + (N ) is th yild obtaind in th signal window (25 < < 5 GV) whn th polarizd bam is hlicity positiv (ngativ), and l ± ar th rlativ luminosity. Th rlativ luminosity factors ar calculatd indpndntly with high prcision using non- vnts. Th STAR 213 A L rsults hav rachd unprcdntd prcision and will significantly advanc our undrstanding of th nuclon spin structur. To assss thir impact, th STAR 213 data wr usd in th rwighting procdur of NNPDF global fit basd on NNPDFpol1.1 parton dnsitis [12]. Th rsults from th rwighting ar shown in Fig. 3 as th blu hatchd bands. Th diffrnc of th hlicity distributions of ū and d in th proton from th rwighting is shown in Fig. 4 [13]. Th nw STAR data confirm th xistnc of a flavor asymmtry in th polarizd quark sa, ū(x)> d(x), in th rang of.5 < x <.25 at a scal of Q 2 = 1 (GV/c) 2. This is opposit to th flavor asymmtry obsrvd in th unpolarizd quark distributions, whr d(x)>ū(x) ovr a wid x rang has bn obsrvd [1].
