news update August 2018 (No.6/18) Still the heat continues but should we complain? We ll soon get fed up with the rain when it returns, so make the most of it while it lasts, as many members did last weekend at the annual VSCC Prescott Hill Climb. Several gathered on Friday afternoon for tea at the kind invitation of Ros & Tony Hartnell, eating far too much cake prior to going for supper that evening at The Plough Inn at Ford. clutch lining Last month we mentioned that investigations are underway into the prospect of having some clutch plates lined with a modern friction material, in place of the traditional cork facings. These investigations are specifically in respect of 18/80 clutch plates, but in the meantime we have heard from the owner of a Flatnose 14/28 M.G. who has just had his clutch plates relined by a specialist firm, with a modern friction material which is commonly used in modern wet clutches for example in fork lift trucks. The corked plates on a 4-cylinder car are somewhat smaller in diameter than those on an 18/80, but the principal is the same i.e. the two plates each have cork protruding about 3mm each side of the plates. When the new friction material is bonded to each side of the plates, the surface must be machine-scored about 1.5mm deep, so that the oil can be thrown away from the plate by centrifugal force, in order for the clutch to work properly. The criss-cross pattern of these scores can be seen in the illustrations below. The two friction plates are at the top of the picture, bottom left is the centre plate and at bottom right, the pressure plate.
Here s the clutch assembly in the bell-housing, installed on the splined centre hub and the gearbox is ready to go back onto the engine. A close up of the clutch sandwich. From the left - pressure plate, rear friction plate, centre plate, front friction plate and protruding splined hub with castellated nut. The happy owner tells us that the new clutch works well, and we ll keep you informed about its long-term performance. Drive safely,
