1. How are different types of radiation arranged along the electromagnetic spectrum? A. By how fast they travel incorrect answer B. By their sources incorrect answer C. By the amount of energy they carry incorrect answer D. By how radioactive they are incorrect answer 2. Place the following types of EM radiation in order, from lowest energy to highest energy: A) Visible light; B) Gamma rays; C) Radio waves A. A, C, B B. C, A, B C. B, C, A D. C, B, A 3. Astronomers often scan the sky using devices called radio telescopes. What can you conclude about these devices? A. They send radio broadcasts out to distant stars and planets. B. They pick up the radio waves emitted by stars C. They are less powerful than optical telescopes D. They can detect ultraviolet radiation. 4. Which word best describes gamma rays? A. Weak B. Destructive C. Visible D. Harmless 5. What do all forms of electromagnetic radiation have in common? A. Their strength B. Their speed C. Their wavelength D. Their frequency

6. Which lab activity from class would provided evidence that different light sources and different materials have different spectras (light signatures)? Activity: THE ACTIVITY USING THE SPECTROSCOPES/GLASSES Supporting evidence from that activity: WHEN WE USED THE SPECTROSCOPE GLASSES TO LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIGHT (I.E. SUNLIGHT, FLUORESCENT LIGHT, ELECTRICAL DEVICE LIGHT, WE SAW DIFFERENT RAINBOW PATTERNS. ALSO, WHEN WE WERE AT BUEHLER WE USED THE SPECTROSCOPE GLASSES TO IDENTIFY GASES BASED ON THEIR LIGHT SIGNATURE. THIS PROVES THAT DIFFERENT LIGHTS AND MATERIALS HAVE DIFFERENT LIGHT SIGNATURES BECAUSE THEY RE MADE OF DIFFERENT SUBSTANCES. 7. List all the ways we discussed and read about in class that astronomers can learn about objects and places in space, especially the ones that are too far for humans to travel to. HUMANS HAVE GONE INTO SPACE ORBITING THE EARTH, ORBITING THE MOON AND LANDING ON IT TELESCOPE TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS US TO SEE DEEP INTO SPACE SPACE CRAFT HAVE BEEN SENT TO LAND ON OTHER PLANETARY OBJECTS TO EXPLORE THEIR TERRAINS AND ENVIRONMENTS SPACE CRAFT HAVE BEEN SENT TO SPACE TO TRAVEL PAST AND/OR AROUND OTHER PLANETARY OBJECTS SPECTROSCOPY HAS BEEN USED TO ANALYZE THE LIGHT FROM DIFFERENT PLANETARY OBJECTS 8. We investigated different ways that astronomers hunt for water in the solar system and beyond. List all the lab activities we did in class to demonstrate this. Explain how each activity helps astronomers find evidence of water out in space. ASTRONOMERS HAVE USED PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN FROM SATELLITES AND OTHER TECHNOLOGIES. THOSE PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE BEEN ANALZYED FOR EVIDENCE OF CURRENT WATER OR PAST WATER BY OBSERVING THE LANDFORMS. ASTRONOMERS USE SPECTROSCOPY TO ANALYZE THE LIGHT EMITTING FROM PLANETARY OBJECTS. BY ANALYZING THE LIGHT, ASTRONOMERS CAN DETERMINE IF HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN ARE/WERE PRESENT FOR THE EXISTENCE OF WATER VAPOR IN THE ATMOSPHERE.

DIRECTIONS: Use your notes from 9 10 and the terms in the vocabulary box to fill in the blanks for the following nine questions. You will not need to use every term. Vocabulary Electromagnetic radiation Gamma rays Radiant energy Visible light Electromagnetic spectrum Infrared waves Radio waves Wavelength Frequency Microwaves Ultraviolet rays X-rays 9. The Electromagnetic spectrum represents the different forms of electromagnetic radiation. 10. Light is classified as wavelength because electrical and magnetic fields vibrate in a light wave. 11. Radiant energy is energy that travels by radiation. An example of this is light. 12. Heat radiation, also known as infrared waves, cannot be seen by your eyes but can be felt by your skin. 13. Microwaves are one type of electromagnetic radiation. 14. Radio waves can be used to communicate with satellites. 15. Because gamma rays have the highest energy of all electromagnetic radiation, they are the most damaging to human tissue. 16. Compared to all other types of electromagnetic radiation, radio waves have the lowest frequency. 17. An overexposure to ultraviolet rays can result in sunburns and skin cancer.

18. Match the kind of Electromagnetic Radiation (on the left) likely to be used in each of the following technologies (on the right). Each Technology may be used only once. Electromagnetic Radiation Technology C X-rays A. TV broadcast signals E Microwaves B. In a hospital to keep surgical equipment sterile. F Gamma rays C. Examining the inside of a weld in a steel oil pipe A Radio waves D. Lamp used to warm a baby chick D Infrared waves E. Measuring the speed of a passing car B Ultraviolet waves F. Used by an oncologist (a physician who studies and treats cancer) DIRECTIONS: Read the statements given below. If the statement is true, write T on the line in front of the statement. If it is false, write F and correct the statement to make it true. 19. F Radiant energy spreads out from its source in all directions. WAVES 20. F Electromagnetic radiation includes only visible light waves, RADIO, MICROWAVES, INFRARED, ULTRAVIOLET, X-RAY, GAMMA. 21. F Microwaves HEAT are IS a type of infrared wave. 22. F X rays have more LESS energy than gamma rays. 23. F Radio waves, microwaves and ultraviolet INFRARED waves all have longer SHORTER wavelengths than visible light. 24. T Both X-rays and gamma rays have higher frequencies than UV rays. 25. T The Sun radiates both visible energy and invisible energy.

26. F Communicating with satellites is an application of gamma RADIO rays. 27. Which of the following energies has the LONGER wavelength in the diagram? (Circle the best choice.) Radio or Infrared waves 28. Which of the following energies has the SHORTER wavelength in the diagram? (Circle the best choice.) X-Ray or Microwave 29. Which color of the visible light waves has the highest energy level in the diagram? (Circle the best choice.) Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Violet 30. The shorter the wavelength between waves, the higher its. 31. GAMMA waves have the highest frequency and carry the most energy. 32. X-RAYS waves are a type of energy that can penetrate materials and get a picture of what is located inside. These are used by doctors and security at airports. 33. VISIBLE LIGHT waves are the ONLY energy frequencies humans can see. 34. INFRARED waves (heat) have a wavelength just larger than the color red. 35. ULTRAVIOLET waves (cause skin burn) have a wavelength just shorter than the color violet. 36. RADIO The wave that has the longest wavelength and lowest

frequency.
