UPPER BOUND OF MULTIPLICITY IN PRIME CHARACTERISTIC DUONG THI HUONG AND PHAM HUNG QUY arxiv:1901.00849v1 [math.ac] 3 Jan 2019 Abstract. Let (R,m) be a local ring of prime characteristic p an of imension with the embeing imension v. Suppose the Frobenius test exponent for parameter ieals F te(r) of R is finite, an let Q = p Fte(R). It is shown that e(r) Q v. We also improve our boun for F-nilpotent rings. Our result extens the main results of Huneke an Watanabe [6] an of Katzman an Zhang [9]. 1. Introuction Throughout this paper, let (R, m) be a Noetherian commutative local ring of prime characteristic p > 0 an of imension. Our work is inspire by the work of Huneke an Watanabe [6] in what they gave an upper boun of the multiplicity e(r) of an F-pure ring R in term of the embeing imension v. Namely, Huneke an Watanabe prove that e(r) for any F-pure ring. In the case R is F-rational, the authors of [6] provie a better boun that e(r) ( v 1 1) (cf. [6, Theorem 3.1]). Recently, Katzman an Zhang trie to remove the F-pure conition in Huneke-Watanabe s theorem by using the Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik number HSL(R). Notice that HLS(R) = 0 if R is F-injective (e.g. R is F-pure). If R is Cohen-Macaulay, Katzman an Zhang [9, Theorem 3.1] prove the following inequality e(r) Q v, where Q = p HSL(R). They also constructe examples to show that their boun is asymptotically sharp (cf. [9, Remark 3.2]). The key ingreient of this paper is the Frobenius test exponent for parameter ieals of R. Recall that the Frobenius test exponent for parameter ieals of R, enote by Fte(R), is the least integer (if exists) e satisfying that (q F ) [pe ] = q [pe ] for every parameter ieal q, where q F is the Frobenius closure of q. It is aske by Katzman an Sharp that whether Fte(R) < for every (equiimensional) local ring (cf. [8]). If R is Cohen-Macaulay then Key wors an phrases. 2 DUONG THI HUONG AND PHAM HUNG QUY F te(r) = HSL(R). Moreover the question of Katzman an Sharp has affirmative answers when R is generalize Cohen-Macaulay by [5] an R is F-nilpotent by [14] (see the next section for the etails). The main result of the present paper as follows. Theorem 1.1. Let (R,m) be a local ring of imension with the embeing imension v. Then (1) If R is F-nilpotent then (2) Suppose Fte(R) <. Then 1 e(r) Q v, 1 e(r) Q v, We will prove the above theorem in the last section. In the next section we collect some useful materials. 2. Preliminaries F-singularities. We firstly give the efinition of the tight closure an the Frobenius closure of ieals. Definition 2.1 ([3, 4]). Let R have characteristic p. We enote by R the set of elements of R that are not containe in any minimal prime ieal.then for any ieal I of R we efine (1) The Frobenius closure of I, I F = {x x Q I [Q] for some Q = p e }, where I [Q] = (x Q x I). (2) The tight closure of I, I = {x cx Q I [Q] for some c R an for all Q = p e 0}. We next recall some classes of F-singularities mentione in this paper. Definition 2.2. A local ring (R,m) is calle F-rational if it is a homomorphic image of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring an every parameter ieal is tight close, i.e. q = q for all q. Definition 2.3. A local ring (R,m) is calle F-pure if the Frobenius enomorphism F : R R,x x p is a pure homomorphism. If R is F-pure, then it is prove that every ieal I of R is Frobenius close, i.e. I F = I for all I. The Frobenius enomorphism of R inuces the natural Frobenius action on local cohomology F : Hm i(r) Hi m (R) for all i 0. By similar way, we can efine the Frobenius closure an tight closure of zero submoule of local cohomology, an enote by 0 F an Hm(R) i 0. Hm(R) i Definition 2.4. (1) A local ring (R,m) is calle F-injective if the Frobenius action on Hm(R) i is injective, i.e. 0 F = 0, for all i 0. Hm(R) i
UPPER BOUND OF MULTIPLICITY 3 (2) A local ring (R,m) is calle F-nilpotent if the Frobenius actions on all lower local cohomologies Hm i(r), i 1, an 0 are nilpotent, i.e. Hm(R) 0F = Hm(R) i Hi m (R) for all i 1 an 0 F = Hm(R) 0. Hm(R) Remark 2.5. (1) It is well known that an equiimensional local ring R is F-rational if an only if it is Cohen-Macaulay an 0 = 0. Hm(R) (2) An excellent equiimensional local ring is F-rational if an only if it is both F- injective an F-nilpotent. (3) Suppose every parameter ieal q of R is Frobenius close. Then R is F-injective (cf. [13, Theorem A]). In particular, an F-pure ring is F-injective. (4) An excellent equiimensional local ring R is F-nilpotent if an only if q = q F for every parameter ieal q (cf. [12, Theorem A]). F-invariants. We will boun the multiplicity of a local ring of prime characteristic in term of the Frobenius test exponent for parameter ieals of R. Let I be an ieal of R. The Frobenius test exponent of I, enote by Fte(I), is the smallest number e satisfying that (I F ) [pe ] = I [pe]. By the Noetherianess of R, Fte(I) exists (an epens on I). In general, there is no upper boun for the Frobenius test exponents of all ieals in a local ring by the example of Brenner [1]. In contrast, Katzman an Sharp [8] showe the existence of a uniform boun of Frobenius test exponents if we restrict to the class of parameter ieals in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. For any local ring (R,m) of prime characteristic p we efine the Frobenius test exponent for parameter ieals, enote by F te(r), is the smallest integer e such that (q F ) [pe] = q [pe] for every parameter ieal q of R, an Fte(R) = if we have no such integer. Katzman an Sharp raise the following question. Question 1. Is F te(r) a finite number for any (equiimensional) local ring? The Frobenius test exponent for parameter ieals is closely relate to an invariant efine by the Frobenius actions on the local cohomology moules Hm i (R), namely the Hartshorne- Speiser-Lyubeznik number of Hm i(r). The Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik number of Hi m (R) is a nilpotency inex of Frobenius action on Hm i (R) an it is efine as follows HSL(H i m(r)) = min{e F e (0 F H i m(r) ) = 0}. By [2, Proposition 1.11] an [10, Proposition 4.4] HSL(Hm i (R)) is well efine (see also [15]). The Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik number of R is HSL(R) = max{hsl(hm i(r)) i = 0,...,}. Remark 2.6. (1) If R is Cohen-Macaulay then Fte(R) = HSL(R) by Katzman an Sharp [8]. In general, the authors of this paper prove in [7] that Fte(R) HSL(R). Moreover, Shimomoto an the secon author constructe a local ring satisfying that HSL(R) = 0, i.e. R is F-injective, but Fte(R) > 0. (2) Huneke, Katzman, Sharp an Yao [5] gave an affirmative answer for the question of Katzman an Sharp for generalize Cohen-Macaulay rings. (3) Recently, the secon author [14] gave a simple proof for the theorem of Huneke, Katzman, Sharp an Yao. By the same metho he also prove that Fte(R) < if R is F-nilpotent. Very recently, Maox [11] extene this result for generalize F-nilpotent rings.
4 DUONG THI HUONG AND PHAM HUNG QUY 3. Proof of the main result This section is evote to prove the main result of this paper. Without loss of generality we will assume that R is complete with an infinite resiue fiel. We nee the following key lemma. Lemma 3.1. Let (R,m) be a local ring of imension, an q a parameter ieal. (1) If R is F-nilpotent then q q F, where I is the integral closure of ieal I. (2) In general we have q +1 q F. Proof. (1) By the Briançon-Skoa type theorem [3, Theorem 5.6] we have q q. The assertion now follows from Remark 2.5(4). (2) The assertion follows from [9, Theorem 2.2] 1. We prove the main result of this paper. Theorem 3.2. Let (R,m) be a local ring of imension with the embeing imension v. Then (1) If R is F-nilpotent then 1 e(r) Q v, 1 (2) Suppose Fte(R) <. Then e(r) Q v, Proof. Because theproofsof two assertions arealmostthesame, wewill only prove(1). Since R is F-nilpotent we have Fte(R) < by Remark 2.6(3). Let q = (x 1,...,x ) be a minimal reuction of m. By Lemma 3.1(1) we have m m = q q F. On the other han we have (q F ) [Q] = q [Q] by the efinition of Fte(R). Thus (m ) [Q] q [Q]. Exten x 1,...,x to a minimal set of generators x 1,...,x,y 1,...,y v of m. Now R/q [Q] is spanne by monomials x α 1 1 x α yβ 1Q+γ 1 1 y β v Q+γ v 1, where 0 α 1,...,α,γ 1,...,γ v < Q an 0 β 1 + +β v <. The number of such monomials is Q v( ) v 1 1 so lr (R/q [Q] ) Q v( v 1 1). Since q is a parameter ieal we have e(q [Q] ) = Q e(q) = Q e(r) an e(q [Q] ) l R (R/q [Q] ). Hence e(r) = 1 ) 1 Q e(q[q] Q l R(R/q [Q] ) 1 1 Q Qv 1 The proof is complete. = Q v ( v 1 1 1 In fact KatzmananZhang[9, Theorem2.2]neee toassumethat everyc R isanon-zeroivisor, i.e. Rhasnoembeeprimes.
