Thermoacoustic Analysis of Combustion Instability Importing RANS Data Giovanni Campa Sergio Camporeale Dipartimento di Meccanica, Matematica e Management Politecnico di Bari Bari, Italy Ezio Cosatto Ansaldo Energia Genova, Italy Excerpt from the Proceedings of the 2012 COMSOL Conference in Milan Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 1 / 19

Something to be avoided about Thermoacoustic Instability! Franck Nicoud, University of Montpellier, VKI Lecture, Nov. 2010 Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 2 / 19

Origin of Thermoacoustic Instability Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 3 / 19

Thermoacoustic Instabilities They are due to the coupling between the unsteady heat release rate and the acoustic oscillations inside the combustion chamber. Gain of Acoustic Energy from Heat Release: 1 C pt v p q dv > Losses = Instability p acoustic pressure fluctuations; q heat release fluctuations. Wave Equation 1 2 p ρ ( 1 c 2 t 2 ρ p ) = γ 1 q c 2 t where q is fluctuation of the heat input per unit volume: q (x) = κ u i (t τ(x)) q(x) u i How to model heat release fluctuations? Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 4 / 19

Heat Release Model = Flame Sheet. Simplified approach and useful for the comprehension of the phenomenon and for sensitivity analyses. Is it realistic? = Flame Sheet inside a realistic configuration of combustion chamber. Does it describe the actual flame? = Spatial Distribution of the Flame inside a realistic configuration of combustion chamber. It is close to the actual flame, but it is not enough! Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 5 / 19

Objectives Investigate the thermoacoustic behavior of a practical annular combustion chamber using COMSOL Multiphysics; Introduce the actual temperature field and the actual flame shape as from RANS simulation; Examine the influence of the flame parameters. Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 6 / 19

Mathematical Model Eigenfrequency Analysis Perturbations are expressed by complex functions of time and position, so that the acoustic pressure waves are governed by: λ 2 p ρ ( 1 c 2 ρ p) = γ 1λ q(x, τ) c 2 where λ = iω is the complex eigenvalue of the system: Real part = Eigenfrequency; Imaginary part = Growth Rate: In COMSOL Growth Rate Positive = Unstable Mode; Growth Rate Negative = Stable Mode. physics = Acoustics application module = Pressure Acoustics study = Eigenfrequency Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 7 / 19

Ansaldo Energia Annular Combustion Chamber 3D FEM Geometry Boundary Conditions Closed End at Inlet and at Outlet; Symmetric Boundary Conditions in order to study a quarter of the chamber instead of the whole. Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 8 / 19

Burner Modeling Burner Transfer Matrix (see Campa and Camporeale, COMSOL Conference 2010) p ρc u T 11 T 12 = T 21 T 22 d the matrix elements are function of the Mach number, the area ratio α, the pressure loss coefficient ζ, the effective less l eff. Data are the ones from the actual Ansaldo Energia machine. p ρc u u Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 9 / 19

Modal Analysis On the left side Mode 3, axial waveform, and on the right side Mode 4, azimuthal waveform n = 1. On the left side Mode 8, azimuthal waveform n = 3 in the plenum, and on the right side Mode 13, azimuthal waveform n = 2. Import Reaction Rate field in COMSOL Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 13 / 19

Rate of Reaction Actual Flame Sheet where q = RR(x) LHV q (x) = κ u i (t τ(x)) q(x) u i being RR the Rate of Reaction as it comes from the RANS simulations and LHV is the Lower Heating Value of the fuel. 1 q = 0 and q = 0 when Rate of Reaction is lower than an inferior limit, which is properly defined; 2 in the other points q (volumetric heat release W /m 3 ) is calculated considering the Lower Heating Value and the Rate of Reaction. Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 14 / 19

Combustion chamber modes for different values of τ. Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 16 / 19

Influence of time delay τ on growth rate and Rayleigh index Rayleigh Index It is an important indicator of thermo-acoustic coupling: R i = V p qdv p q Giovanni Campa (Politecnico di Bari) COMSOL Conference 2012 October 10-12, 2012, Milan 17 / 19

Conclusion An actual annular combustion chamber has been examined; The actual operative conditions have been exported from RANS simulations into COMSOL Multiphysics; More detailed analysis when spatial distributions of temperature and heat release are considered; The effects of the 3D distribution of the flame inside the combustor can be investigated; The effects of the non linearity of the heat release can be investigated in the future.
