The result is sed on the nlysis of dt, corresponding to totl integrted luminosity of 4p 1, or 8 1 6 φ-mesons produced. The mesured rnching rtio of φ ηπ γ decy is equl to (.83±.23) 1 4. 1 Introduction Severl mechnisms my contriute into φ(12) ηπ γ decy rte including φ Vπ type trnsitions, where V is vector meson, with susequent V ηγ rditive decy, nd electric dipole rditive trnsition φ (98)γ with sclr (98) meson decying into ηπ. Theoreticl predictions of the φ ηπ γ rnching rtio, sed on ssumption of pure φ Vπ decy mechnism ([1], [2], [3]), re quite low, of the order of 5 1 6. Sitution with theoreticl description of the φ (98)γ decy is much more complicted, ecuse the results strongly depend on the qurk structure of the (98) meson. At present, its qurk structure is not well estlished nd severl models exist including modifictions of q q scheme [4], 4-qurk model [5], nd KK moleculr model [6]. Theoreticl estimtions of φ (98)γ rnching rtios vry from out 1 5 in two-qurk nd KK moleculr models up to 1 4 in the 4-qurk model ([1],[7],[2]), mking the φ (98)γ decy unique proe of the structure of (98) meson. The first serch for the φ ηπ γ decy ws conducted in the ND experiment [8] t emil:goluev@inp.nsk.su VEPP-2M e + e collider in 1987, where n upper limit of 2.5 1 3 ws estlished. In 1995 the new SND detector hving etter hermeticity, grnulrity, energy nd sptil resolution strted opertion t VEPP-2M. First indictions of φ ηπ γ decy were seen y SND in 1997 [9]. The result ws sed on nlysis of hlf of the φ-meson dt recorded in 1996 1997. In this work nlysis of full dt smple ws crried out. The φ ηπ γ decy ws oserved for the first time nd its rnching rtio ws mesured. 2 Detector nd experiment Experiment [1], [11] ws crried out in 1996 t VEPP-2M e + e collider with SND detector. The SND detector [12] is universl nonmgnetic detector. Its min prt is 3- lyer electromgnetic clorimeter consisted of 163 NI(Tl) crystls with totl thickness of 35 cm or 14 rdition lengths. The energy resolution for photons cn e descried s 4.2%/ 4 E(GeV) [13], the ngulr resolution of the clorimeter is close to 1.5 degrees, nd the solid ngle coverge is 9% of 4π sterdin. The dt, used for the study of φ ηπ γ decy ws recorded in 1996-1997 in the energy rnge from 98 to 14 MeV with the mostofthedtcollectedintheclosevicinity of the φ-pek. Six successive scns of the energy rnge were performed with totl integrted luminosity of 4.p 1 nd totl numer of φ-mesons produced of 8.2 1 6.
3 Dt nlysis The min ckground sources for the process under study e + e φ ηπ γ 5γ (1) re the following φ-meson decys: e + e φ ηγ 3π γ (2) e + e φ K S K L neutrls (3) nd nonresonnt process e + e φ π π γ (4) e + e ωπ π π γ. (5) The expected numer of events of the process (1) t rnching rtio of φ ηπ γ equl to 1 4 is out 3, while the numer of ckground events (2) is 3 1 4. Although theprocess(2)doesnotproduce5γ eventsdirectly, it cn fke the topology of the process (1) due to either merging of close photons or loss of soft photons through openings in the clorimeter. The process (3) produces 8 1 5 K S K L events with K S π π decys. The K L -s in φ-meson decys re slow nd hve decy length of 3 m, while the nucler interction length in NI(Tl) is out 3 cm. Chrcteristic feture of spurious 5γ events produced y K S K L decys due to either nucler interction of K L -s or their decys in flight is n energy-momentum imlnce nd poor qulity of t lest one photon in the event. Primry event selection ws sed on simple criteri: the numer of reconstructed photons is equl to five, there re no trcks in the centrl drift chmers, the totl energy deposition rnges from.8 to 1.1 center of mss energy 2E, nd the totl trnsverse momentum is less thn.15e /c. Such criteri gretly reduce ckground from the processes (2) nd (3), not ffecting the decys (1), (4), nd (5). Also rejected were the events contining close photon pirs with sptil ngle etween photons less thn 27 degrees, where energies could e poorly reconstructed. Next step in the event selection ws sed on qulity of photons nd kinemtic fit. Prmeter ζ [14] ws constructed descriing the likelihood of hypothesis, tht given trnsverse energy deposition profile of cluster of hit crystls in the clorimeter cn e ttriuted to single photon. The requirements were imposed tht ζ <, for ll photons. Then kinemtic fit ws performed under the ssumption, tht selected events re e + e 5γ ones nd corresponding prmeter χ 2 e, descriing the likelihood of this ssumption ws clculted. with χ 2 e > 1 were lso rejected. Study of simulted 5γ events of the processes (1), (4), nd (5) showed, tht the χ 2 e nd ζ cuts reject less thn 15% of true 5γ events, suppressing the process (2) y fctor of 3 nd mking the expected ckground due to the process (3) very smll, of the order of 1 events. Although, in contrst with the other processes, the Monte Crlo simultion of the process(3) is much less ccurte due to nucler interction of K L, so the dt nlysis my not completely rely on this estimtion. Chrcteristic feture of the process (1) is tht ech event must contin two photon pirs with invrint msses of η nd π mesons. Simultion shows tht if the photons in n event re enumerted in descending orderinenergy, thephotonsfromη γγ decy hvethe numersofeither1nd 2or1nd 3. Corresponding experimentl nd simulted distriutions in m 12 nd m 13 with n dditionl requirement, tht rest of photons contins pir with m ij m π < 2 MeV/c 2 nd more stringent photon qulity requirement ζ < 5. re shown in Fig.1. Bckground estimtions re sed on PDG tle vlue for φ ηγ decy rnching rtio [15], our mesurements of e + e ωπ cross section [11] nd φ π π γ decy rnching rtio [16]. Distriution of experimentl events in m 12 + m 13 shows n enhncement centered t η-meson mss, while the sum of ckground processes is nerly flt in this region. The sum of ll simulted ckground processes, where ech one ws normlized to thenumerofeventsexpectedtgivenintegrted luminosity nd totl numer φ-meson decys, descries the spectrum outside the enhncement quite well. If this excess of events is due to the decy (1), it corresponds to φ ηπ γ rnching rtio of the orderof 7 1 5, ut it is difficult to extrct ccurte result from these inclusive spectr, ecuse of poor signl to ckground rtio nd unknown decy dynmics. Detiled study of the process (1) requires sustntil suppression of ckground. It could e done using kinemtic fit with intermedite η nd π mesons tken into ccount. For ech event ηπ γ nd π π γ hypotheses were tried nd correspondingχ 2 ηπ γ, nd χ 2 π π γ prmeters clculted. To suppress the processes (4) nd (5) the following requirements were imposed: χ 2 ηπ γ < 2, χ 2 π π γ > 2, nd for dditionl suppression
the process (2): ζ < 4. With these requirements the contriution from the processes(4) nd (5), which re reltively rre themselves, ecomes negligile. Theresultingspectrofthe E γmx /E, energy of the most energetic photon, re shown in Fig.2. Since the recoil photon in the process (2) hs nrrowspectrum peked t 36 MeV, E γmx /E must e more thn.7 in this process. The spectrum in Fig.2, where true 5γ events re suppressed y n order of mgnitude, is well reproduced y simultion of the process (2) lone, while the spectrum in Fig.2 shows excess of experimentl events with ζ < 4 over the simultion of (2). The ckground (2) still domintes t E γmx /E >.7, so events with E γmx /E >.7 were rejected. From Fig.2 one cn see, tht this roughly hlves the detection efficiency for the process (1). This lso enhnces dependence of the detection efficiency on the invrint mss of ηπ system, whichvriesfrom1%tm ηπ = 97MeV/c 2 up to 5% t M ηπ = 7 MeV/c 2. The distriutions of the events over photon qulity prmeter ζ re shown in Fig.3. Selection criteri here were the sme s descried ove, except loosened requirement on photon qulity: ζ < 1. It cn e seen, tht simultion well descries the ckground from the process (2), while the excess of events in Fig.3 t low ζ is comptile with existence of the decy (1) with BR of the order of 1 4. Also ws checked the distriution in χ 2 ηπ γ. While the distriutions of experimentl events with < ζ < 1 is in good greement with simultion of the process (2), the distriution of the events with ζ < 4 grees with the simultion of the process (1) with smll contriution of the process (2). The totl numer of selected events stisfying the selection criteri is 25, from which 5 were estimted to e ckground from the process (2). The corresponding rnching rtio ws clculted using the ηπ invrint mss distriution of the selected events nd detection efficiencies, otined from simultion. The resulting vlue is (.83±.23) 1 4, where error is sttisticl one. For such stringent selection criteri the systemtic error in detection efficiency could e s high s 15%, ut t present level of experimentl sttistics the sttisticl error domintes. In order to study the ηπ mss spectrum the E γmx cut ws dropped. This incresed the ckground from the φ ηγ decy, ut mde detection efficiency twice higher nd less dependent on ηπ mss. The ηγ ckgroundwssutrctedusingeventswithm γγ outside η pek. The result is shown in Fig.4. The invrint mss spectrum ws fitted using formule from Ref.[1] nd ssuming tht the decy is pure φ (98)γ trnsition. The result is lso shown in Fig.4. It is seen, tht lthough the errors re very lrge, the oserved mss spectrum is consistent with γ decy mechnism. Constrint fit with g ηπ =.85g K+ K [5] gives the following vlues of (98) meson prmeters: M = 986 +23 1 MeV/c2, gk 2 + K /4π = (1.5±.5) GeV 2. 4 Conclusion In this work evidence of the new decy φ ηπ γ with rnching rtio of (.83±.23) 1 4 is presented. The oserved enhncement in the ηπ invrint mss spectrum t lrge m ηπ is consistent with domintion of γ decy mechnism, while reltively high decy rte grees with the theoreticl predictions sed on 4-qurk model of (98)- meson [1], [2]. 5 Acknowledgements This work is supported in prt y Russin Fund for Bsic Reserches, grnts No. 96-2- 19192 nd 96-15-96327, nd STP Integrtion No.274.
