SOUTHEAST BY NORTHWEST PROGRAM NOTE In the summer o 2016, my dear riend and colleague Maestro Arnaud Caumeil o the Harmonie de Limonest asked me to coose a secial iece o music to be erormed in collaboration with the Soulants de St Priest, under the direction o Maestro Quentin Degeorges These two French cities are suburbs o Lyon, St Priest to the Southeast, and Limonest to the Northwest The resulting work relects my iressions o these beautiul laces, incredible eole and colex culture INTRODUCTION FORMAL ANALYSIS M1-8, Allegro, Bb Major tonal center, Industrial Pulse is established in ercussion M5 - The undulating, churning, incessant low o the Saône and Rhone rivers in reresented in the woodwinds M21 - Moti [A] is orecasted in a brie call rom the horns, the [B] Moti is heard in resonse rom solo truet M29 - [A] and [B] motis continue to be constructed as the Industrial Energy builds M7 - [A] Moti begins to develo harmonically, tonal modulation begins M45 - [C] Moti in relative minor is established M5 - The River Energy begins to build again towards an ierect authentic cadence EXPOSITION M61 - The [A] Moti is ully realized and exressed harmonically in the woodwind amily exclusively This is the St Priest exression o the [A] Moti, in reerence to the large numbers o woodwind layers in their ensemble, as well as the bustling energy o the Renault engine actories and nearby city center o Lyon M69 - The [B] Moti ollows in similar orchestration M79 - The brass layers join the woodwinds, symbolically reresenting the Limonest layers joining in, as the [A] Moti is restated M87 - The [B] Moti ollows again, ully orchestrated across the ensemble as the Exosition concludes DEVELOPMENT 1 (THE CITY) M95 - The River Energy aears again as the melodic ragments rom both [A] and [B] Motis begin to multily and exand, both in rhythmic and harmonic colexity M10 - Tonal center modulates to Eb Major, continues to build M111 - Modulates to C then F, M1 - The develoment is interruted by a bold brass anare transition RECAPTITULATION (1) M5 - The [A] Moti is recaitulated owerully, ollowed by the [B] Moti at M1 DEVELEOPMENT 2 (THE COUNTRY) M144-4, Teo slows by hal, ragments o the [A] Moti slow the momentum, modulation to Eb Major M15 - The [A] Moti transorms into a lyrically exressed rendition, becomes more harmonically colex, this is the Limonest exression o the [A] Moti, in reerence to the slower, rural setting The surrounding Beaujolais country is ainted here, with snashots o Villeranche-sur Saône, Lachassagne, Charnay, Chatillon, Civrieux-d'Azergues and inally Limonest M161 - The [C] Moti emerges again in the relative minor M169 - Modulation to Gb The Limonest Church Bell is heard ringing out over the town as the [A] Moti continues to become more harmonically colex M179 - The [B] Moti ollows as usual, with a rhythmically diminutive statement o the Limonest Harmony as the climax o the hrase M187 - Modulation to Bb Major, Fragments o the [A] Moti again build to a cadence, M19-8, Allegro, DS al Coda M61-94 RESTATEMENT OF EXPOSITION (as inal RECAPITULATION) M196 Coda, ending with the same sark o lie as the beginning

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE A GRAMMY nominated music educator and accolished multi-instrumentalist, conductor, and cooser, Andrew David Perkins (b1978) holds a secialist certiicate in Orchestration rom the Berklee College o Music, a Master o Music degree rom the University o Michigan, and a Bachelor o Fine Arts degree rom Michigan State University For over a decade he has been actively arranging, coosing and conducting nationally and abroad Born in Royal Oak, Michigan into a musical amily, Perkins began coosing on the iano in his early childhood His orchestral training accelerated at the Interlochen Arts Academy, and soon thereater he began undergraduate studies ocusing on music education and coosition Mr Perkins sent several seasons as a marching member and conductor o the Phantom Regiment Drum Bugle Cors rom Rockord, Illinois He esecially enjoys writing music or younger musicians, on which he has ocused or the ast ew years Perkins has served as an adjunct roessor o Film Scoring at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan, and is currently the Director o Instrumental Music and Music Technology at Fenton High School in Fenton, Michigan He additionally serves as the Music Director and Conductor o the Fenton Community Orchestra Mr Perkins is a member o the American Society o Coosers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and his music is exclusively ublished through APOLLO STUDIOS (ASCAP) Andrew David Perkins currently resides in Michigan with the love o his lie whom he married in 2010, and their daughter His interests include theology, hotograhy, cinema, vintage instruments, gear, gastronomy, and crat-brewing
