VOLCANO PROJECT Summary For the next project of the year, you will research, report on, and create a sculpture of a famous volcano. This will be a group project. It is important to share the work as evenly as possible. At the end of the project, each of you will provide feedback on your group performance during the project. You will present your volcano to the entire school on Wednesday, October 24 th during main lesson and your volcano must erupt! You will research and work with your group on a report for your volcano at school. Most or all of the work for building your volcano will take place outside of school. A note to parent helpers This is a student project! Parents may help buy materials, use major power tools (i.e. saws), drive you to meet your group, and coordinate meeting times. As fun as it may be, it is important to allow the group to build the volcano on their own. The following are the major benchmarks for the project: Date September 24 th September 26 th October 12 th October 19 th October 22 rd October 24 th October 26 th Benchmark Project Assigned and Preferences Submitted Volcanoes/Partners Assigned Group Research Due Group Research Report Draft Due Volcano Sculpture Due/Practice Presentations Presentation to school (around 9:45AM) Final Copy of Report Due (in Main Lesson Book) Research Report Outline 1) Type and Facts, 2) Geography and Geology, & 3) Volcanic Activity. An introduction and conclusion statement will be expected along with proper final draft format (see below): correct spelling, punctuation, typed writing, with complete and interesting sentences. Type and Facts: What type of volcano is it? Be descriptive: define its type and the characteristics of its type. Any other facts such as the elevation and/or size that you can provide would also be beneficial to your report. 1
Geography and Geology: Where is it located (country, city)? What does the landscape look like? Which geographic plate(s) does it sit on? (Refer to the Plate Tectonics handout.) Volcanic Activity: How active is your volcano? When was the last time it erupted? How frequently does it erupt? Has it had any major eruptions causing destruction to people and/or its landscape? Format Your report should be between one and two pages double-spaced using 12-point Times New Roman Font. Each section must be a full paragraph. At least 1 outside source is required and 2-3 sources are recommended (think about 1 different source per person in the group). It is even better if you can have different types of sources, such as a periodical/magazine, encyclopedia, book, and Internet site. You will keep track of your research on the RESEARCH BRIEFS provided, which will be turned in with your research report. Your report should include a title page that lists: the name of your volcano, your group members, and the date, and it should include a separate ending page listing your reference sources. Sculpture of your Volcano You will construct a scale model of your volcano with your group. Your platform of your volcano must be a maximum size of 30 x30, although may be smaller than this. The materials you use are up to you but it should be something that can be kept easily in the classroom and will not spoil or decompose. Your volcano must erupt. We will be erupting the volcanoes outside and your volcano must erupt in a safe manner. No flammable materials or fireworks are allowed. You must give a proposal to Mr. Kinney on how you plan to create your eruption. There are several different types of volcanoes. The principle types of volcanoes include the 1) Lava/Plug Dome, 2) Cinder Cone, 3) Shield, and 4) Composite. 2

Preferences The following are my preferences for my group s volcano: 1 st Choice: 2 nd Choice: 3 rd Choice: 4 th Choice: Mr. Kinney will try to incorporate one of your group member preferences but cannot guarantee this. The better your explanation, the more likely you will work with that person. The following are my preferences for my volcano project partners: I would prefer not to work with on this project: because (be constructive) 7
