A sampling of articles currently seen on Solar Novus Today Products Smart Homes & Storage: The latest trend in residential solar Eight PV Design Solutions The future of solar lies in intelligent energy management, with new products that integrate PV, storage, monitoring and control. The challenge to the installer is that PV systems of all sizes are variable, intermittent sources of power that require unique solutions for grid integration. This article describes how the smart home works, the major components to an installation including energy storage, cloud-based monitoring and an EV charging station. The many PV design software solutions available today have similar features, such as taking shade into account in energy production modeling. Yet others provide more robust designs and report capabilities. Most are cloudbased and several enable seamless integration with popular design tools such as CAD and Energy Toolbase. This article describes 8 of the latest versions of today s PV design solutions. Business Research Reshuffling of the European Solar Market CPV System with Microcells and Embedded Microtracking In 2016 Europe was the first region of the world to achieve 100GW of cumulative installed solar, however, Europe is no longer in the lead. China is expected to add more than 100GW through 2021 and India could install over 60GW in that same time period. This article looks at how politics and policy has affected European solar installations, and as the market tapers off, where the opportunities lie. A CPV system developed at Penn State University tracks the sun with nearly unnoticeable movement. The microcells convert 600 times concentrated sunlight with 30% efficiency, producing 50% more than an average solar cell in a single day. Case Study Five Solar Hybrid Microgrids in Colombia The Colombian government issued a mandate to expand the availability of electricity to the remote area of Acandi by building five solar hybrid installations, or microgrids. The only access that residents had to electricity was from power provided just a few hours a day by diesel generators. The five off-grid systems, which include Trina solar panels, Trojan batteries and SMA inverters, covers most of the residents electrical demands and reduces dependence on diesel fuel.
