LIMITING FRACTIONAL AND LORENTZ SPACES ESTIMATES OF DIFFERENTIAL FORMS JEAN VAN SCHAFTINGEN arxiv:0903.282v [math.ap] 2 Mar 2009 Abstract. We obtain estimates in Besov, Lizorkin-Triebel and Lorentz spaces of differential forms on R n in terms of their L norm.. Introduction The classical Hodge theory states that if u C c (R N ; l R n ), if < p <, one has () Du L p C( du L p + δu L p) where du is the exterior differential and δu the exterior codifferential. This estimate is known to fail when p = or p =. When p =, J. Bourgain and H. Brezis [2,3], and L. Lanzani and E. Stein [5] have obtained for 2 l n 2 the estimate u L n/(n ) C( du L + δu L ), which would be the conseuence that would follow by the Sobolev embedding from () with p =. When l = or l = n one has to assume that du or δu vanishes. I. Mitrea and M. Mitrea [6] have in a recent work extended these estimates to homogeneous Besov spaces. Using interpolation theory, they could replace the norm u L n/(n ) by with p s n = n and = 2 s. The goal of the present paper is to improve the assumption on by relying on previous results and methods. We follow H. Triebel [0] for the definitions of the function spaces. The first result is the estimate for the Besov spaces Ḃs (Rn ): Theorem. For every s (0,), p > and >, if (2) p s n = n, then there exists C > 0 such that for every u C c (R n ; l R n ), with moreover, δu = 0 if l = and du = 0 if l = n, one has C( du L + δu L ). In particular, since u Ẇs,p = p,p, one has the estimate (3) u Ẇs,p C( du L + δu L ). In Theorem, we assume that >. If it held for some (0,], then the embedding of F,2 (Rn ) Ḃ0 n/(n ), (Rn ) would hold. This can only be the case 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. 35B65 (26D0; 35F05; 42B20; 46E30; 46E35; 58A0). Key words and phrases. 2 JEAN VAN SCHAFTINGEN when. Therefore, the only possible improvement of Theorem would be the limiting case = : Open problem. Does Theorem hold for =? The estimate of Theorem follows from the corresponding estimate for homogeneous Lizorkin Triebel spaces F (R s n ): Theorem 2. For every s (0,), p > and > 0, if (2) holds, then there exists C > 0 such that for every u C c (Rn ; l R n ), with moreover, δu = 0 if l = and du = 0 if l = n, one has u Ḟs C( du L + δu L ). Note that here there is no restriction on > 0. Finally, the latter estimate has an interesting conseuence for Lorentz spaces. Theorem 3. For every >, then there exists C > 0 such that for every u C c (Rn ; l R n ), with moreover, δu = 0 if l = and du = 0 if l = n, one has u L n n, C( du L + δu L ). In Theorem 3 the case = and l = 0 is euivalent with the embedding of W, (R n ) in L n n, (R n ) which was obtained by J. Peetre [8] (see also [5]). This raises the uestion Open problem 2. Does Theorem 3 hold for = and l? The proof of the theorems rely on the techniues developed by the author[,2], and on classical embeddings and regularity theory in fractional spaces. 2. The main tool Our main tool is a generalization of an estimate for divergence-free L vector fields of the author []: Proposition 2.. For every s (0,), p > and > 0 with sp = n, there exists C > 0 such that for every f (C c L )(R n ; n R n ) and ϕ C c (Rn ; R n ), if df = 0, R n f ϕ C f L ϕ Ḟs. The proof of this proposition follows the method introduced by the author [4,,2,4] and followed subseuently by L. Lanzani and E. Stein [5] and I. Mitrea and M. Mitrea [6]. The extension to the case = p in a previous work of the author [, Remark 5] (see also [4, Remark 2] and [4]); the proposition can be deduced therefrom by following a remark in a subseuent paper [3, Remark 4.2]. Proof. Writeϕ = ϕ dx +ϕ n dx n andf = f dx 2 dx n + +f n dx dx n. Without loss of generality, we shall estimate f ϕ. R n Fix t R, and consider the function ψ : R n R defined by ψ(y) = ϕ (t,y). Choose ρ Cc (R n ) such that R ρ = and set ρ n ε (y) = ε ρ( x n ε ). For every α (0,), there is a constant C > 0 that only depends on ρ and α such that and ρ ε ψ L Cε α ψ C 0,α (R n ) ψ ρ ε ψ L Cε α ψ C 0,α (R n ),
FRACTIONAL AND LORENTZ SPACE ESTIMATES 3 where ψ C 0,α (R n ) is the C 0,α seminorm of ψ, i.e., One has on the one hand ψ(z) ψ(y) ψ C 0,α (R n ) = sup. y,z R z y n f (t, )(ψ ρ ε v) C f (t, ) L (R n )ε α ψ C 0,α (R n ). R n On the other hand, by integration by parts, and since n i= if i = 0, f (t, )ρ ε ψ = f i (t,y) i (ρ ε ψ)(y)dtdy R n R n R + i=2 C f (t, ) L (R n )ε α ψ C 0,α (R n ). Taking ε = f L (R n )/ f(t, ) L (R n ), one obtains (4) f ψ C f α L (R n ) f (t, ) α L (R n ) ψ C 0,α (R n ). R n Now, by the embedding theorem for Lizorkin Triebel spaces, one has the estimate ψ C 0,α C ψ Ḟs (R n ) ; with α = p ; hence from (4) we deduce the ineuality f ψ C f p L f (,t) p L ψ Ḟs R n (R n ). Now, recalling that, as a direct conseuence of the Fubini property that is stated in [0, Theorem 2.5.3] [, Théorème 2], [9, Theorem 2.3.4/2] ( R ϕ(t, ) p Ḟ s,p (R n ) dt ) C ϕ p F s,p (R n ), one concludes, using Hölder s ineuality that f u C f ( p L f (,t) p L ϕ(t, ) F s,p (R )) dt C f n L ϕ Ḟs,p (R n ). R n R Proposition 2.2. For every s (0,), p > with p + s n =, > and l n, there exists C > 0 such that for every f Cc (Rn ; l R n ) with df = 0, one has C f L. f Ḟ s,p Proof. The proposition will be proved by downward induction. The proposition is true for l = n by Proposition 2.. Assume now that it holds for l+, and let f Cc (Rn ; l R n ). Since d(f dx i ) = 0, Proposition 2. is applicable and f Ḟ s, n n s i= f dx i Ḟ s, n n s C A useful corollary of the previous proposition is f L = Cn f L. Corollary 2.3. For every s (0,), p > with p + s n =, > and l n, there exists C > 0 such that for every f Cc (Rn ; l R n ) with df = 0, one has f Ḃ s,p C f L. Proof. This follows from classical embeddings between Besov and Lizorkin Triebel spaces; see the proof of Theorem below. i=
4 JEAN VAN SCHAFTINGEN We begin by proving Theorem 2: 3. Proofs of the main results Proof of Theorem 2. To fix ideas, assume that 2 l n. Recall that one has u = d ( K (δu) ) +δ ( K (du) ), where the Newton kernel is defined by K(x) = Γ(n 2 ) 2π n 2 x n 2. By the classical elliptic estimates for Lizorkin Triebel spaces, K (δu) Ḟs+ C δu Ḟs and K (δu) Ḟs+ Now, since d(du) = 0, Proposition 2.2 is applicable and yields K (du) Ḟs+ C δu L. C δu Ḟs. Since δ(δu) = 0, one can by the Hodge duality between d and δ treat K (du) Ḟs+ similarly. We can now deduce Theorem from Theorem 2: Proof of Theorem. First assume that p. Then one has C u Ḟs, andtheoremfollowsfromtheorem2. Otherwise,if < p, then bythe embedding theorems of Besov spaces, C u Ḃr, = C u Ḟr, with r = s+n( p ) and Theorem also follows from Theorem 2. We finish with the proof of Theorem 3. It relies on the Lemma 3.. For every s > 0, p > and > with s < n and (5) p = s n, there exists C > 0 such that for every u C c (Rn ), Proof. One has u L C u Ḟs,2. u = I s (( ) s 2 u), where the Riesz kernel I s is defined for x R n by I s (x) = Γ( n α 2 ) π n 22 s Γ( s 2 ) x n s. One has then by Sobolev ineuality for Riesz potentials in Lorentz spaces of R. O Neil [7] (see also e.g. [5, Theorem 2.0.2]), u L r,p C ( ) s 2 u L p. One concludes by noting that ( ) s 2u L p and u Ḟs p,2 are euivalent norms [0, Theorem 2.3.8 and section 5.2.3]. Proof of Theorem 3. Choose s so that (5) holds with p = n n. Since s n = n, one can combine Theorem 2 and Lemma 3. to obtain the conclusion.
