Giverelativelyprieitegersa 1,...,a, thefrobeiusuberg(a 1,...,a ) is defied as the largest iteger which caot be expressed as x 1a 1 + +x a with x i oegative itegers. I this article, we give the Frobeius uber of priitive Pythagorea triples. That is, g( 2 2,2, 2 + 2 ) = ( 1)( 2 2 )+( 1)(2) ( 2 + 2 ). 1. Itroductio Thehistroy of Frobeius ubersgoes back to J. J. Sylvester. He proposedaproble to fid the largest uber for two relatively prie itegers a ad b which caot be expressed as ax+by with x ad y oegative itegers [6]. His aswer was ab a b. F. G. Frobeius ephasized this proble ad asked to study such a uber for ore tha two itegers. That is, give relatively prie itegers a 1,a 2,...,a, he asked to fid the largest iteger N = g(a 1,a 2,...,a ) for which a 1 x 1 + a 2 x 2 + + a x = N has o oegative iteger solutios. The uber heceforth has bee called Frobeius uber. May atheaticias have studied Frobeius ubers ad foud soe algoriths to copute the, evertheless o oe foud a geeral exact forula. I actual, ulike Sylvester s elegat forula, there are o polyoial solutios for ore tha two itegers [1]. I geeral, it is NP-hard to fid the Frobeius ubers for the uber of give itegers [4]. So, lots of the studies have focused o specific sets of itegers. For exaple, forulas for arithetic progressios ad geoetric progressios were foud [5], [3]. The forula for Fiboacci ubers F i,f i+2,f i+k was foud [2]. I the preset article, we give a forula for priitive Pythagorea triples. 2 GIL, HAN, KIM, KOO, LEE, LEE, NAM, PARK, AND PARK 2. Mai result We have that ( 2 2,2, 2 + 2 ) is a priitive Pythagorea triple if two itegers > are realtively prie ad have opposite parity. Theore. The Frobeius uber for a Pythagorea triple is For coveiece, let g( 2 2,2, 2 + 2 ) = ( 1)( 2 2 )+( 1)(2) ( 2 + 2 ). A = ( 1)( 2 2 )+( 1)(2) ( 2 + 2 ) = ( 2 +2 2 2 2). First, we prove that g( 2 2,2, 2 + 2 ) A. To do this, we show that A caot be expresssed by 2 2, 2, ad 2 + 2. Suppose that there exist oegative itegers x, y, ad z satisfyig (*) x( 2 2 )+y(2)+z( 2 + 2 ) = A. Dividig both sides by, we obtai that ( x+z) 2 0 (od ). Sice ad are relatively prie, we ca set z = x+k. Plug it ito the above expressio ad divide by. The k 2 +2x+2y+k 2 = 2 +2 2 2 2 k( 2 + 2 )+2(x+y) = ( 2 2 )+2( ) ad we ca coclude that k is odd sice 2 + 2 ad 2 2 are both odd. Settig k = 2l+1, we obtai If l 0, the l 2 +l 2 +x+y+ 2 =. (l+x)+(l+y +) =, but this is absurd because g(,) = by Sylvester. It follows that l 1. Set l = l 1 0. Chagig roles of x ad z, pluggig x = z k ito the above expressio (*) yields k( 2 2 )+y(2)+z(2 2 ) = ( 2 +2 2 2 2). Divide both sides by ad rearrage. k( 2 2 )+y(2)+z(2) = 2 +2 2 2 2 Usig k = 2l+1 = 2( l 1)+1 = 2l 1, we ca write l (+)( )+y+z = ( l ( )+z ) + ( l ( )+y ) =.
FROBENIUS NUMBERS OF PYTHAGOREAN TRIPLES 3 This is also absurd. So it was proved that g( 2 2,2, 2 + 2 ) ( 1)( 2 2 )+( 1)(2) ( 2 + 2 ). Now, we prove that g( 2 2,2, 2 + 2 ) A. That is, we show that every iteger greater tha A is expressed as x( 2 2 )+y(2)+z( 2 + 2 ) with x,y,z 0. To do this, we eed a lea. Lea. For a fixed [ positive ] iteger b, we defie y to be the sallest positive iteger such that the iterval b+y, y cotais a iteger, ad we also defie x to be the sallest iteger cotaied. The, the iequality holds. (y+x)( 2 2 ) A+( 2 2 )+b(2) Proof. The existece of y is guarateed fro < 1 <. Fro the coditio, if y = 0, the x ad b also vaish. Thus the iequlity holds for y = 0 trivially. Let us cosider whe y 1. We have that x 1 < b+y fro the iiality of x. Also, b+(y 1) = b+y > b+y 1 > x 2. We divide two cases accordig to copariso of x 1 ad b+(y 1). Case 1: x 1 < b+(y 1) < x. Note that (1-1) (x 1)+1 = x +1 b+(y 1) = b+y. If x (y 1) (y 1) < x or, the b+(y 1) < x (y 1) ad it cotradicts the iiality of y. Thus, (1-2) (y 1)+1 = y +1 x. Cobiig the above two iequalities (1-1) ad (1-2), we obtai (x +1+ b) y (x+ 1). This iequality yields a ew boud for x. That is, (1-3) x 2 +b 2 2.
4 GIL, HAN, KIM, KOO, LEE, LEE, NAM, PARK, AND PARK Now, we ca coclude that (y+x)( 2 2 ) (x+ 1+x)( 2 2 ) by (1-2) ( ) 2 2 +b 2 2 + 1 ( 2 2 ) by (1-3) = b(2)+( 2 2 )+( 1)(2) ( 2 + 2 ) = A+( 2 2 )+b(2). Case 2: x 2 < b+(y 1) < x 1. We already verified that x 1 < b+y at the start of the proof. Thus, (2-1) x +1 b+y. If x 1 (y 1), the b+(y 1) x 1 (y 1) < x 1 or Thus (y 1) ad it cotradict the iiality of y. (2-2) (y 1)+1 = y +1 (x 1) = x. Fro the above two iequalities (2-1) ad (2-2), ad thus (x +1 b) y (x + 1) (2-3) x 1+ +b 2 2. The, (y+x)( 2 2 ) (x+ 1+x)( 2 2 ) by (2-2) ( 2 +b ) 2 2 ++ 1 ( 2 2 ) by (2-3) = b(2)+( 2 2 )+( 1)(2) ( 2 + 2 ) = A+( 2 2 )+b(2). Hece, the proof of Lea was copleted. Let us resue the proof of Theore. Let k be a arbitrary positive iteger. We ca choose two positive itegers a ad b such that If a is chose to be egative, cosider for sufficietly large t. a( 2 2 ) b(2) = A+k. (a+2t)( 2 2 ) ( b+( 2 2 )t ) (2) = A+k
FROBENIUS NUMBERS OF PYTHAGOREAN TRIPLES 5 Recall x ad y i Lea. Fro b+y x y, If a+1 y+x, the b+x y 0 ad y x 0. 1 k = a( 2 2 ) b(2) A (y+x 1)( 2 2 ) b(2) A = (y+x)( 2 2 ) ( 2 2 ) b(2) A A+( 2 2 )+b(2) ( 2 2 ) b(2) A = 0. by Lea This cotradictio yields y+x a. Theferefore, A+k = a( 2 2 )+( b)(2) = (a y x)( 2 2 ) +( b+x y)(2) +(y x)( 2 + 2 ) ad a y x 0, b+x y 0, y x 0. We coclude that g( 2 2,2, 2 + 2 ) = A.
