antasia on KANG DING LOVE SONG was comosed in the summer o 2008 or the Shanghai Conservatory o Music azz Ensemle directed y Proessor Zhang, Xiaolu The iece is to e remiered at a secial concert in Octoer 2008 conducted y Dr Gene Aitken The intent was to use a well known Chinese olk song as a oint o dearture or a iece that comines the Chinese olk tradition with the language o contemorary Western azz and art music in a new and exciting way In an eort to create the aroriate instrumental colour or the oening statement o the melody eginning at measure 1, a well-known Chinese vessel lute known as the xun is eatured All xun assages are cued into the 1 st Alto Saxohone art and can e erormed on alto saxohone or lute An otional Solo Alto lute art is included as well In the event a xun is not availale, the alto lute can cature some o the timral eauty o the xun The oening o the iece should e very ruato and erormed with an orchestral aroach As noted in the score, all o the sextulet and 1 th note igures in the harmonmuted trumets and iano should e layed without strict adherence to the rhythm The intent is to create an Imressionistic lur At numerous oints in the score (m79, 97, 109 et al), this syncoated rhythm occurs: I your ensemle is comortale with quadrulets, an otional rhythm is cued in at all o these oints: The quadrulet rhythm creates a more nuanced sense o rhythmic low in these measures 122: OPEN SOLO SECTION This section o the iece is or imrovised solos and is designed to e very user riendly in regard to the chord changes The entire solo section can e negotiated with ust two scales, D natural minor and D Dorian (or Ami9 ), as oints o dearture or imrovisation It is hoed that even the xun soloist will eel insired to imrovise here! I the xun soloist does wish to lay in this assage, the rhythm section should lay much lighter and the drum set layer should switch to rushes The assage rom mm 122 17 and mm 18 19 can e reeated as needed with the ensemle ackgrounds rought in as desired 188 This contrauntal assage uilds gradually to the climax o the iece at m 2 Please ensure all o the individual lines can e heard clearly It has een a leasure to work on antasia on KANG DING LOVE SONG I hoe you enoy it!
