2018 Issue No. 4 - Week 6 (as of 13 February 2018) HIGHLIGHTS Global Polio Certification Risk Assessment Face-to-Face Meeting, Malta, 30-31 January 2018 The Global Commission for Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (GCC) at its 16th meeting in July 2017 requested the WHO secretariat to develop a global polio risk assessment model, which will be tailored to assessing risks for global certification. The GCC secretariat in collaboration with the WHO Regional Offices drafted a single set of globally defined indicators to assess certification risk in countries using existing data sources. In order to refine and facilitate the endorsement of the global certification risk assessment by the GCC, a face-to -face meeting between the GCC secretariat and the WHO Regional Offices was convened on 30-31 January 2018 in Malta. The main objectives of the meeting were: 1. review the polio risk assessment process utilized in each of the six WHO Regional Offices; 2. agree on indicators and their definitions, scoring, weighting and final categories of risk; and 3. obtain consensus on a harmonized risk assessment method for use by the GCC in the certification process. The global certification risk assessment is not meant to replace regional risk assessment. The purpose of the global certification risk assessment and regional risk assessment are different and the regions will continue to conduct their region-specific risk assessments. 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.5 0.0 Chart 1.
