Philosophy graded Question: What is a non commutative (=NC) scheme? Grothendieck, Manin,... : NC scheme = abelian category classical scheme X Qcoh(X) Drinfeld, Kontsevich,... : NC scheme = triangulated category class. scheme X derived category D(Qcoh(X))

From philosophy to mathematics graded NC scheme = triangulated category Problems: 1. Tensor product is not triangulated 2. category with triangulated target is not triangulated 3. Hochschild homology, cyclic homology... not defined Partial solutions:..., Bondal-Kapranov (1990),... Complete solution: Toën (2004), based on Drinfeld... Main aim: Construct the closed tensor category of following Toën. NC = enhanced triangulated cat.

Outline graded

Complexes form a closed monoidal category k is a commutative ring. C(k) is the category of complexes of k-modules... d C p d C p+1 d..., p Z. is the tensor product of complexes over k. Lemma (C(k), ) is a tensor category (i.e. monoidal and symmetric). Moreover, it is closed, i.e. it has an internal Hom-functor HOM defined by graded Hom(C D, E) = Hom(C, HOM(D, E)).

DG category = cat. enriched in complexes graded Definition A differential graded (=dg) category is given by a class of objects obj(a), complexes of morphisms A(X, Y ), X, Y obj(a), composition maps A(Y, Z ) A(X, Y ) A(X, Z ), X, Z obj(a), which are associative and unital. A dg functor F : A B is given by... Example (dg cat. A with one object ) = (dg algebra A = A(, )) In particular, each ordinary (non com.) algebra A = A 0 is a dg category.

Example: of complexes Example M a k-linear category (e.g. a category of modules) A = C dg (M) = dg category of complexes over M objects: complexes of objects of M morphisms: C dg (M)(X, Y ) = HOM M (X, Y ) HOM M (X, Y ) n :... d Y d... X X p d X X p+1 d X... f f Y p+n d Y Y p+n+1... d Y graded Differential: d(f ) = d Y f ( 1) n f d X.

form a closed tensor category graded Definition The tensor product A B of two dg is the dg category with objects: (U, V ), U A, V B, morphisms: A(U, U ) B(V, V ) Lemma The category dgcat of dg endowed with is a closed tensor category with HOM(A, B) = {dg functors A B} Note: HOM(A, B) has many objects even if A and B only have one. This is the main reason for working with rather than algebras.

Zero-homology graded Definition The zero-homology category H 0 (A) has objects: same as A, morphisms: (H 0 A)(X, Y ) = H 0 (A(X, Y )). Example H 0 (C dg (M)) = C(M)/(homotopy) = H(M) Definition An object N of A is contractible if N becomes a zero object in H 0 (A). Remark N is contractible iff 1 N is a coboundary in A(N, N).

DG modules A a dg category A op its opposite: f op g = ( 1) f g g f. Definition A dg A-module is a dg functor M : A op C dg (k). A morphism of dg modules f : L M is a morphism of dg functors such that fx : LX MX is a morphism of complexes for all X in A. Example A an ordinary algebra: graded dg A-module = complex of right A-modules. A a dg category: For each X A, we have the free A-module X : Y A(Y, X).

The derived category graded Definition f : L M is a quasi-isomorphism if fx is a quasi-isomorphism for all X in A. The derived category DA is the localization of the category of dg modules with respect to the class of quasi-isomorphisms. Remark DA is a triangulated category with shift induced by the shift of complexes and triangles coming from short exact sequences of complexes. The Yoneda functor X X induces an embedding H 0 (A) DA.

Saturated dg graded Definition The perfect derived category per A DA is the triangulated subcategory closed under retracts generated by the free modules. The dg category A is saturated if the Yoneda functor induces an equivalence H 0 (A) per(a). Examples The dg category of complexes C dg (M) is saturated. A non zero dg algebra A is not saturated. Definition (Bondal-Kapranov) An enhanced triangulated category is a saturated dg category A. The associated triang. cat. is per A.

Definition A dg functor F : A B is a Morita morphism if it induces an equivalence F : DB DA. Example Let A be an ordinary algebra and proj A the category of finitely generated projective A-modules. The inclusions are Morita morphisms. A proj A Cdg b (proj A) graded Definition The category NCS of non commutative is the localization of the category dgcat of dg with respect to the Morita morphisms. Two dg A, B are derived equivalent if they become isomorphic in NCS.

Model structure and tensor product graded Theorem (Tabuada) The category dgcat carries a Quillen model structure whose weak equivalences are the Morita morphisms, fibrant objects are (certain) saturated dg. Consequences NCS is well-defined, each object of NCS is isomorphic to an enhanced triangulated category (=saturated dg category), NCS becomes a tensor category via the derived tensor product.

graded Problem The HOM-functor of dgcat cannot be derived to yield a HOM-functor for NCS (ultimate reason: tensor products of free NC algebras are not free NC!). Main Theorem 1 (Toën) The tensor category NCS does have an internal HOM-functor. If k is a field and B saturated, then HOM(A, B) = A Fun(A, B) where A Fun is the A -functor category (Fukaya, Kontsevich, Lyubashenko,... ).

Quotients 0 N A A/N 0 Main Theorem 2 (K, Drinfeld) B If N A is a full dg subcategory, there is a universal morphism Q : A A/N 1 in NCS such that Q(N) = 0 in H 0 (A/N ), N N. If k is a field, then A/N is obtained by adjoining to A a contracting homotopy for each object of N (Drinfeld). We have per(a/n ) (per(a)/ per(n )). 0 graded

From to NC graded Definition The dg derived category of an abelian category E is Remark D dg (E) = dg category of complexes over E dg subcategory of acyclic complexes The theorem yields H 0 (D dg (E)) D(E). Via X Qcoh(X) D dg (Qcoh(X)), we obtain {classical } {abelian } {NC }

Mukai Question What are the morphisms between the NC associated with classical? Let X, Y be quasi-compact, separated, flat. Put D dg (X) = D dg (Qcoh(X)). Main Theorem 3 (Toën) We have a canonical bijection {isoclasses of D(X Y )} graded bijective {continuous morphisms D dg (X) D dg (Y )}, where a morphism of NCS is continuous if the associated triangle functor D(X) D(Y ) commutes with infinite sums. Compare with Orlov s theorem.

Cyclic homology I Suppose for simplicity that k is a field. Let A be a dg k-category. Let C 0 (A) = X 0 A A(X 0, X 0 ), C 1 (A) = X 0,X 1 A A(X 1, X 0 ) A(X 0, X 1 ), C p (A) = X 0,...,X p A(X p 1, X p )... A(X 0, X 1 ). For example, for p = 5, C p (A) is formed by sums of diagrams X 0 X 1 X 5 X 2 graded X 4 X 3

Cyclic homology II Definition The Hochschild (-Mitchell) complex C(A) is the sum-total complex of the bicomplex... C p (A)... C 1 (A) C 0 (A) 0 with the horizontal differential given by p 1 b(f 0,..., f p ) = ±(f 0,..., f i f i+1,... f p ) ± (f p f 0,..., f p 1 ). i=0 graded The Hochschild homology HH (A) is the homology of (C(A), b tot ). The cyclic actions on the C p (A) yield a mixed complex M(A) and the cyclic homology HC (A).

Invariance and localization Theorem (K) a) Cyclic homology extends to a functor NCS Vec(k). b) Each exact sequence 0 N A A/N 0 of NCS yields a long exact sequence... HC p (N ) HC p (A) HC p (A/N ) HC p 1 (N )... graded Remarks An analogous theorem holds for K -theory (Thomason-Trobaugh). Sequences as in b) arise when X = U Z, X a commutative (quasi-compact quasi-separated) scheme, U open.

The Hodge-to-de Rham degeneration conj. graded Definition (Kontsevich) A dg category A is smooth if the bimodule (X, Y ) A(X, Y ) is in per(a op A). It is proper if it is isomorphic in NCS to a dg algebra whose homology is of finite total dimension. Endow M(A) k[[u]], deg(u) = 2, with the differential d = d 1 + d u. Hodge-to-de Rham degeneration Conjecture (Kontsevich) If A is a smooth proper dg category over a field k of characteristic 0, then the homology of M(A) k[[u]]/(u n ) is a flat k[u]/(u n )-module for all n 1.
