Mr. P s Planet Profile Project PLANET PROFILE PROJECT (part 1) Research 3-5 (print and electronic) sources for the planet assigned. Write a one-page research report (Google Classroom assignment: Google Doc). Submit assignment via Google Classroom when complete. DUE: Dec. 12 PLANET PROFILE PROJECT (part 2) Create a "Planet Fact File" slide show presentation (separate Google Classroom assignment: Google Slides). Submit assignment via Google Classroom when complete. DUE: Dec. 12

Part 1: Planet Research Report Your task is to research the planet assigned to you. Once you are all done researching, you will then create a Google Doc (in Google Classroom). This will eventually be made available for the class to read and study. You will be graded that you have included the following: Getting Started: Use the library to read and research about your planet. Include both print and electronic resources. You may try these suggested Internet sites linked below: http://education.jpl.nasa.gov/k12/kids.html http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/planets/ http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/index.cfm http://www.space.com/planets/ http://www.nasm.si.edu/etp/ Suggestions on What to Include: As you read, take notes on important information such as: 1. Planet s name, what it means, or if it was named after a god from mythology. 2. Planet s position in the solar system, how far it is from the sun? (AU) What other information about the planet s orbit is important? 3. How long does it take for your planet to rotate on its axis (day)? 4. How large is your planet in relation to the other planets in the solar system? (biggest, smallest) How does it compare in relation to the Earth? 5. What is the force of gravity on the surface? 6. How long does it take for the planet to orbit the sun? 7. What makes up the atmosphere of your planet? Is it thick or thin? 8. What is the temperature range on your planet? 9. What type of planet is it? (rocky, gas giant) What does it look like? 10. Does your planet have moons and rings? How many? 11. Could humans live on your planet, why or why not? 12. Is there anything special or unusual about your planet? 13. If your planet is not visible using the naked eye, tell when your planet was discovered and by whom. Structure of the Report You must have an introductory and closing paragraph. The report should be at least five paragraphs long and should clearly describe your planet. The report should also include a Bibliography that lists the internet sites and books you used. Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable research site.

Planet Report Rubric A: (93-100) I have created a report on the planet assigned containing the following information: the planet s name, position in My entire project is submitted on time, spelling and punctuation are perfect, the presentation is neat and an example of my VERY BEST work. B: (85-92) I have created a report on the planet assigned containing the following information: the planet s name, position in My entire project is submitted on time, spelling and punctuation are almost perfect, the presentation is neat and an example of GOOD work. C: (77-84) I have created a report on the planet assigned containing the following information: the planet s name, position in My entire project is submitted on time, spelling and punctuation are fair, the presentation is neat and an example of ADEQUATE work. D: (70 76) I have created a report on the planet assigned containing the following information: the planet s name, position in My entire project is submitted on time, however, there are numerous spelling and grammar mistakes, information is missing or incorrect and the entire presentation is below standard for a sixth grade magnet school student.

F: (50-69) I have created a report on a Planet that is incomplete. My report is poorly crafted, with numerous errors, and does not include much of the information required. My report is not 5 paragraphs long and does not cite the books used or the Internet sites used for gathering information. I have not submitted my project on time, and the entire presentation is below standard for a sixth grade magnet school student. MISSING: 0 I did not submit a Planet Report or make any attempt to do so.

Part 2: Planet Fact File Slide Show Planet Project Rubric Slide Show Must Include Points How long does the planet takes to rotate and orbit the Sun?... 10 Features of planet (moons/rings) & interesting facts... 20 Relative size and distance of the planet... 10 Could people create a civilization there and support your answer?... 10 At least 2 library database links used & cited... 20 At least 1 print resource used & cited... 10 At least 3 charts or pictures... 10 Creativity... 10 Total Points 100 A Suggested Format* Slide 1: Title Page-Planet (ex: Saturn) Slide 2: Distance from the sun-how far is it from the sun? What other planets is it near? Slide 3: Size-how big is your planet compared to other planets? Slide 4: Moons-does it have any? How many? Name a few. Slide 5: Orbit-how does it orbit? How many days? Slide 6: Rotation-how does it do this? Slide 7: Temperature-what is this like? Does it have an atmosphere? Slide 8: Interesting facts about your planet that others might not know. Slide 9: Could people create a civilization there and support your answer? Slide 10: Resources (Where did you get your information?) *Good Resources* 1. Science Book 2. www.kidsastronomy.com 3. www.solarsystem.nasa.gov 4. nineplanets.org
