Due Date: 12/12/18 Name: Lesson Five: Biomes 6.LS2.2.4 Using evidence from climate data, draw conclusions about the patterns of abiotic and biotic factors in different biomes, specifically the tundra, taiga, deciduous forest, desert, grasslands, rainforest, marine, and freshwater ecosystems. Directions: Read pages 112 125, watch the videos on Mr. Walls Weebly, and answer the following questions as they guide you in understanding biomes. Read Page 112 1. What word matches the definition below? A group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms 2. What are the six major biomes? 3. How does climate influence plants and animals? Read Page 113 4. Define desert. 5. True or false, a desert is always very hot. Explain your answer. 6. What adaptations does an organism need to live in the desert biome? Watch, Deserts 7. Fill in the chart below for the desert biome using your text and video. Read Page 114 & 115 8. Define rainforest.

2 9. Why do you think plants are everywhere in a rainforest? 10. What are two kinds of rainforest? What s the difference? 11. Why do you think there are so many species of animals that live in the tropical rain forest? Watch, Rainforest 12. Fill in the chart below for the rainforest biome using your text and video. Page 116 13. Define grassland. 14. What are two different types of grasslands? Watch, Savanna grasslands 15. Fill in the chart below for the grassland biome using your text and video.

3 Watch, Prairie grasslands 16. Fill in the chart below for the grassland biome using your text and video. Read Page 117 17. Define deciduous forest. 18. Explain how hibernation is an adaptation in a deciduous forest. Watch, Deciduous Forest 19. Fill in the chart below for the deciduous forest biome using your text and video. Read Page 118 20. Define boreal forest. 21. How are coniferous trees adapted to the boreal forest biome?

4 Watch, Boreal Forest 22. Fill in the chart below for the boreal forest biome using your text and video. Read Page 119 23. Define tundra. 24. What is permafrost? Watch, Tundra 25. Fill in the chart below for the tundra biome using your text and video. Read Page 120 & 121 26. What two places are not considered biomes? Why? 27. What are some of the different biomes you would pass through when hiking a mountain?

5 Do The Math 28. Answer the questions in this section. 1. 2. 3. Read Page 122 29. What tare the two major aquatic ecosystems? 30. What abiotic factors affect all aquatic ecosystems? 31. Why is sunlight important for aquatic ecosystems? Read Page 123 32. How much of the Earth s water is freshwater? What are the freshwater ecosystems? 33. What are some of the different biomes you would pass through when hiking a mountain? Watch, freshwater 34. Fill in the chart below for the freshwater biome using your text and video.

6 Read Page 124 & 125 35. Draw and diagram the following ocean zones: Intertidal, Neritic, Surface, Deep. Figure 2 36. Using the clues, determine at which depth each organism belongs. Anglerfish: Females have a lighted lure to help them attract prey in the dark. Yellowfin Tuna: Found in open waters and has been known to eat squid Tripod Fish: This fish has three elongated fins to help it stand Blue Whale: Feeds on shrimplike creatures at depths of more than 100 meters during the day Swordfish: Often seen jumping out of the water to stun smaller fish Watch, Marine 37. Fill in the chart below for the marine biome using your text and video.

7 Evaluate Identify the biome below using the information you learned from your lesson. 1. warm summers, cold winters; receives at least 50 cm of precipitation per year; trees shed their leaves and grow new ones each year. 2. hot in daytime, cool or cold at night; very dry; organisms are adapted to extreme temperatures and dry conditions. 3. warm, rainy summers; very cold winters with heavy snow; trees produce cones with seeds that are eaten by many animals. 4. warm temperatures do not vary much throughout the year; very wet and humid; greater variety of species than any other biome. 5. extremely cold winters, warmer summers; windy; very dry; no trees, only growing plants. 6. receives between 25 and 75 centimeters of rain each year; populated by grasses and many large herbivores. 7. ecosystems include streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. 8. ecosystems located in the ocean. factors include sharks, squids, and whales. Watch, Biome Video and determine the correct biome for each of the following clips. Identify one abiotic and biotic factor that allows you to determine what biome the movie takes place in. 9. Aladdin 10. Monsters, Inc.

Ask Mr. Walls for the extension activity and fill in the map, using the Biome Map on Mr. Walls Weebly as a guide! Locate and color code the biomes you just learned and examine where they can be found throughout our world!
