VANISHING VISCOSITY IN THE PLANE FOR NONDECAYING VELOCITY AND VORTICITY ELAINE COZZI Abstract. Assuming that initial velocity and initial vorticity are bounded in the plane, we show that on a sufficiently short time interval the unique solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations converge uniformly to the unique solution of the Euler equations as viscosity approaches zero. We also establish a rate of convergence. 1. Introduction We consider the Navier-Stokes equations modeling incompressible viscous fluid flow, given by t v ν + v ν v ν ν v ν = p ν (NS) div v ν = v ν t= = vν, and the Euler equations modeling incompressible non-viscous fluid flow, given by t v + v v = p (E) div v = v t= = v. In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity limit. The question of vanishing viscosity assumes v ν equals v and addresses whether or not the velocity v ν solving (NS) converges in some norm to the velocity v solving (E) as viscosity tends to. This area of research is active both for solutions in a bounded domain and for weak solutions in the plane. We focus our attention on the latter case. The vanishing viscosity problem is closely tied to uniqueness of solutions to the Euler equations, because the methods used to prove uniqueness can often be applied to show vanishing viscosity. One of the most important uniqueness results in the plane is due to Yudovich. He establishes in [19] the uniqueness of a solution (v, p) to (E) in the space C(R; L 2 (R 2 )) L loc (R; L2 (R 2 )) when v belongs to L 2 (R 2 ) and 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification. For this uniqueness class, Chemin proves in [2] that the vanishing viscosity limit holds in the L p -norm, and he establishes a rate of convergence. (In fact, the author only considers the case p = 2; however, the proof of the result can easily be generalized to any p <.) In this paper, we consider the case where initial velocity and initial vorticity are bounded and do not necessarily belong to L p (R 2 ) for any p <. The existence and uniqueness of solutions to (NS) without any decay assumptions on the initial velocity is considered by Giga, Inui, and Matsui in [8]. The authors establish the short-time existence and uniqueness of mild solutions v ν to (NS) in the space C([, T ]; BUC(R n )) when initial velocity is in BUC(R n ), n 2. Here BUC(R n ) denotes the space of bounded uniformly continuous functions on R n (see Theorem 1 for details). In [9], Giga, Matsui, and Sawada prove that when n = 2, the unique solution can be extended globally in time. Under the assumption that both initial velocity and initial vorticity belong to L (R 2 ), and with additional assumptions on the pressure, Serfati shows in [14] that a unique weak solution (v, p) to (E) exists in L ([, T ]; L (R 2 )) L ([, T ]; C(R 2 )) (see Theorem 2). We prove that the vanishing viscosity limit holds for short time in the L -norm when initial velocity and initial vorticity belong to L (R 2 ) (see Theorem 3). To establish the result, we consider low, middle, and high frequencies of the difference between the solutions to the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations separately. Letting n be a function of ν so that as n approaches infinity, ν tends to, we show that each of the three terms in (1.1) converges to as n approaches infinity. The estimate of the term S n (v ν v) L ([,T ];L (R 2 )) relies on the structure of the integral equation satisfied by the solution v ν to (NS) (see (3.1) in Section 3). To bound the high frequency term, given by (Id S n )(v ν v) L ([,T ];L (R 2 )), we apply Bernstein s Lemma and Calderon-Zygmund theory. To estimate the L -norm of (S n S n )(v ν v), we observe that this term has Fourier support in an annulus with inner and outer radius of order 2 n and 2 n, respectively. Breaking this support into 2n smaller

We proceed to show that v ν converges to v in the Ḃ-norm as viscosity approaches (see Lemma 8). One expects this problem to be easier than convergence in L (R 2 ) since L (R 2 ) embeds into Ḃ (R 2 ); however, the convergence rate in the Ḃ -norm must be sufficiently fast to ensure that (S n S n )(v ν v)(t) L (R 2 ) converges to as well, despite the extra factor of n on the right hand side of (1.2). By reducing the problem of vanishing viscosity in the L -norm to that in the Ḃ -norm, we eliminate some of the general difficulties one encounters when proving estimates for the fluid equations in L (R n ). For example, Calderon-Zygmund operators are not bounded on L (R n ) but are bounded on Ḃs (R n ) for all s R (see [17]). We can then use the relation v = 1 ω(v), the boundedness of Calderon- Zygmund operators on Ḃs, and Lemma 2 below to see that the Ḃ-norm of v and the Ḃ 1 -norm of ω(v) are equivalent. This equivalence allows us to prove the main result by using the vorticity formulations of (NS) and (E) to show that the vorticities ω(v ν ) converge to ω(v) in the Ḃ 1 -norm as viscosity tends to. The paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, we introduce the Littlewood-Paley theory, Bony s paraproduct decomposition, Besov spaces, and some useful technical lemmas. In Section 3, we discuss known properties of nondecaying solutions to (N S) and (E). In Section 4 and Section 5, we state and prove the main result; we devote Section 5 entirely to showing that the vanishing viscosity limit holds in the Ḃ -norm. 2. A Few Definitions and Technical Lemmas We first define the Littlewood-Paley operators (see [7] for further discussion of these operators). Properties of Nondecaying solutions to the fluid equations In this section, we summarize what is known about nondecaying solutions to (NS) and (E). We begin with the mild solutions to (NS) established in [8]. By a mild solution to (NS), we mean a solution v ν of the integral equation (3.1) v ν (t, x) = e tν v ν t e (t s)ν P(v ν v ν )(s)ds. In [8], Giga, Inui, and Matsui prove the following result regarding mild solutions in R n, n 2. Theorem 1. Remark 3.2. In the above theorem, one can assume vν L (R n ) and draw similar conclusions. Indeed, with this weaker assumption the theorem is still true as long as one replaces C([, T ]; BUC(R n )) with C w ([, T ]; BUC(R n )), where C w denotes the space of weakly continuous functions. For the main theorem of this paper, we assume that ω is bounded on R 2, which, by Lemma 4, implies that vν belongs to C α (R 2 ) for every α < 1. Therefore, the statement of the theorem with vν BUC(R 2 ) applies in our case. Remark 3.3. Note that when the velocity v ν belongs to L r (R n ) for r <, the pressure can be determined from v ν up to a constant, giving uniqueness of (v ν, p ν ). However, without any decay assumption on the velocity, uniqueness of p ν does not necessarily follow. As a result, in [8] Giga, Inui, and Matsui include the relation p ν (t) =

In [9], Giga, Matsui, and Sawada show that when n = 2, the solution to (NS) established in Theorem 1 can be extended to a global-in-time smooth solution. Before we state the main theorem of the paper, we prove a result giving Holder regularity of the velocity vector fields v ν and v which solve (N S) and (E), respectively, when initial velocity and initial vorticity belong to L (R 2 ). Statement and Proof of the Main Result We are now prepared to state the main theorem. Theorem 3. Remark 4.2. The constant C 1 in (4.1) is equal to A ω L, where A is an absolute constant. Therefore, one can conclude from Theorem 3 that the vanishing viscosity limit holds on a time interval with length inversely proportional to the size of ω L. Moreover, the smallness of ν required to conclude (4.1) depends on T (and therefore on ω L ). Specifically, larger T requires smaller ν for (4.1) to hold (see Remark 4.1). Remark 4.3. In what follows, to simplify notation we refer to the solution of (NS) by v ν rather than (v ν, p ν ); similarly, for the solution of (E) we write v in place of (v, p). It is important to keep in mind, however, that the solution to (NS) is actually the pair (v ν, p ν ) given to us in Theorem 1 and that the solution to (E) is the pair (v, p) given in Theorem 2.
