TANGENT SPACES OF MULTIPLY SYMPLECTIC GRASSMANNIANS arxiv:131.1657v [math.ag] 15 Oct 014 NAIZHEN ZHANG Abstract. It is a natural question to ask whether two or more symplectic Grassmannians sitting inside one ambient Grassmannian intersect transversely. In this note, we take a new perspective and answer the question in the case of two symplectic Grassmannians. The original motivation comes from the study of higher-rank Brill-Noether problems. Our new perspective leads to a new and much simpler proof of a theorem in [Oss13] underlying an expected dimension formula for certain rank two Brill-Noether loci with special determinant. We also hope this new perspective has further implications for other Brill-Noether theoretic problems. 1. Introduction Brill-Noether theory studies the moduli space of vector bundles of fixed rank, with a given amount of global sections, over algebraic curves with given genus. Based on the theory of determinantal varieties, the expected dimension of the moduli stack of vector bundles on a genus g curve, of rank r and fixed determinant L, togetherwith a k-dimensional spaceof sections is (r 1)(g 1) k(k d+r(g 1)). When L = ω is the canonical line bundle and the rank of the vector bundles is, this number simplifies as 3g 3 k. However, utilizing the symplectic form induced by the determinant map, Bertram, Feinberg in [BF98] and Mukai in [Muk95] obtained asymptotically much larger expected dimension in this particular case, namely, a lower bound for the dimension of the corresponding moduli stack which is 3g 3 ( ) k+1. For a wide range of (g,k), this is known to be a sharp lower bound. (See [TiB04], [Zha14].) More generally, when the determinant L is special and m = h 1 (L) > 1, there are m independent maps from L to the ω. This further induces m independent symplectic forms on the space of sections (as compared to the symplectic form in the canonical determinant case). In [Oss13] and [Oss], Osserman generalizes the idea of Bertram, Feinberg and Mukai to obtain new expected dimensions for some more general cases with special determinant. There, a main machinery is the theory of multiply symplectic Grassmannians, which plays a similar role as the theory of symplectic Grassmannians in the canonical determinant case. Due to the existence of more than one symplectic form, multiply symplectic Grassmanians (unlike symplectic Grassmannians) are not necessarily smooth: it is 1
NAIZHEN ZHANG the intersection of various symplectic Grassmannians inside an ambiance Grassmannian and one needs to analyze whether these symplectic Grassmannians intersect transversely. More concretely, we shall analyze when the tangent space of a multiply symplectic GrassmannianMSG(k,E,, 1,...,, m ) has the expected dimension k(n k) m ( k. Thefollowingpropositionisakeyresult in [Oss13] (seeproposition 4.6, [Oss13]): Theorem 1.1. Consider the doubly symplectic Grassmannian, MSG(k,E,, 1, ). The tangent space at a point [V] has dimension ( ) k dim(t V MSG(k,E,, 1, )) = k(n k) if and only if for every linear combination, of, 1,,, there does not exist a -dimensional subspace V of V such that, V E/V = 0. This theorem is crucial for one of the main results in [Oss13]: Theorem 1.. Let C be a smooth projective curve of genus g, and L a line bundle of degree d on C. Denote G(,L,k) to be the moduli space of the following data: a rank vector bundle of degree d (with determinant L), together with a k-dimensional space of global sections. Suppose that h 1 (C,L). Then every irreducible component of G(, L, k) has dimension at least ( ) k ρ L (k,g) := ρ(,d,k,g) g +. In this note, we give a new proof of 1.1, which is shorter and simpler than the original one in [Oss13]. This answers the question of transverse intersection for two symplectic Grassmannians. We hope to generalize our new approach to the general context with several symplectic Grassmannians in question and consider its consequences for other Brill-Noether theoretic problems. In particular, it may shed light on the study of linked symplectic Grassmannians, which has been shown to be useful for proving existence results in rank two Brill-Noether Theory (see [OTiB14]). Acknowledgements. The author would like to thank his advisor, Brian Osserman, for introducing this problem and his tireless instruction. This note is made possible through his help and support.. Notation and Terminology Hereafter, we work over some base field K. The object of interest in this note is the multiply symplectic Grassmannian: Definition.1. Let E be an n-dimensional vector space over some algebraically closed field K. Suppose, 1,...,, m are m independent symplectic forms on E. The multiply symplectic Grassmannian, MSG(k,E;, 1,...,, m ), is defined to be
TANGENT SPACES OF MULTIPLY SYMPLECTIC GRASSMANNIANS 3 the sub-scheme of Gr(k, E) parametrizing all k-dimensional subspaces V of E which are simultaneously isotropic with respect to, 1,...,, m. Remark.. Since V is isotropic with respect to, t, for any v V, v, t naturally induces an element in (E/V). Consequently, fixing v,v V, the map Hom(V,E/V) K : g v,g(v ) t defines an element in Hom(V,E/V). Asmentionedearlier,weseektostudytangentspaces,T V MSG(k,E;, 1,...,, m ), of MSG(k,E;, 1,...,, m ). So we first give a concrete description of them. Lemma.3. Let V be a subspace of E which is isotropic with respect toasymplectic form, over E. Then, T V MSG(k,E;, ) can be identified with {f Hom(V,E/V),f( ) S (V) }. Proof. The tangent space, T V Gr(k,E), of the Grassmannian Gr(k,E) can be identified with Hom(V,E/V). By first-order infinitesimal calculation, f is in the tangent space of the symplectic Grassmannian if and only if the following holds: 0 = v 1 +ǫf(v 1 ),v +ǫf(v ) = v 1,ǫf(v ) + ǫf(v 1 ),v = v 1,ǫf(v ) v,ǫf(v 1 ) = ǫ( v 1,f(v ) v,f(v 1 ) ) This concludes the proof. Corollary.4. The tangent space at [V] of MSG(k,E;, 1,...,, m ) can be identified with the subspace of elements in Hom(V, E/V) which are simultaneously symmetric with respect to, 1,...,, m. ( k The condition that f Hom(V,E/V) is symmetric with respect to, i imposes ) many linear conditions on Hom(V,E/V). Fixing a basis v1,...,v k for V the conditions can be described as follows: v s,f(v t ) v t,f(v s ) i = 0, s < t. Thus, the dimension of T V MSG(k,E;, 1,...,, m ) is at least k(n k) m ( k. Define g i s,t = v s,( )(v t ) v t,( )(v s ) i Hom(V,E/V), s < t. To study when the above expected dimension is obtained is then tantamount to understanding when g i s,t are independent. Throughout the note,, will denote a set of finitely many symplectic forms, and m always denotes the number of forms in it. 3. A New Perspective towards the Problem Recallthedefinitionofg i s,t fromprevioussection. DenoteΩ = span(, 1,..,, m ). The set of elements {g i s,t i = 1,...,m;s < t} in Hom(V,E/V) naturally corresponds to a linear map φ : Λ V Ω Hom(V,E/V) sending (v v ), to
4 NAIZHEN ZHANG v,( )(v ) v,( )(v) and extending by linearity. Obviously, T V MSG(k,E;, ) is of expected dimension k(n k) m ( k if and only if φ is injective. We give an equivalent formulation of this condition: Proposition 3.1. Define j V : V Ω (E/V) : v, v,. φ : Λ V Ω Hom(V,E/V) fails to be injective if and only if ψ : V V Ω = Hom(V,Ω) not zero such that ψ(v)(v ) = ψ(v )(v) for all v,v V and j V ψ = 0. Proof. One has the following natural identification: Λ V Ω = {f Hom(V,V) v (f(v)) = v(f(v )), v,v V } Ω = {ψ Hom(V,V Ω) ψ(v)(v ) = ψ(v )(v), v,v V } (We also identify Hom(V,V Ω) with Hom(V,Hom(V,Ω)).) With this identification, φ can be thought of as a map sending ψ to j V ψ. Hence, the result follows. 4. Application to the Case m = We are now ready to prove Theorem 1.1 as a corollary of Proposition 3.1. Proof of Theorem 1.1. The if direction is trivial. To show the only if direction, recall the definition of j V in 3.1. Consider a non-zero linear map ψ : V V Ω such that j V ψ = 0. Fixing a basis of V, ψ can be presented as M 1, 1 +M,, where M 1,M are two anti-symmetric matrices and, 1,, are the two symplectic forms spanning Ω. By Thm XV.8.1 in [Lan0], up to a choice of basis {v 1,...,v k } for V, one can assume that rank(m 1 ) = m [ (ψ ] 0) and M 1 is block diagonal, where diagonal 0 1 blocks are either of the form or are zeros. 1 0 Denote M 1 = (a i,j ),M = (b i,j ). j V ψ(vi ) = v1 i, 1 + vi,, where vi 1 = j a i,jv j,vi = j b i,jv j. If the i-th row of M 1 is zero, so is the i-th row of M ; otherwise one gets vi, = 0 for some non-zero vi, which violates the assumption that, is nondegenerate. Therefore, by replacingv with span({v i } m i=1 ) (such that the i-th row of M 1 is non-zero) if necessary, one can assume that M 1,M are both non-degenerate of the same (even) rank. In this case, there is an element GL(V) sending vi 1 to vi. Under the fixed choice of basis, this linear map is presented by the matrix M M 1. We claim the eigenspace associated 1. Let d be an eigenvalue of M M1 1 to d is even-dimensional. Indeed, tosolve(di k M M1 1 ) X = 0isequivalenttosolving(dM 1 M1 1 ) X = 0, where dm 1 1 is a singular k k anti-symmetric matrix. By Thm XV.8.1 in [Lan0] again, one can conclude dm 1 1 has even rank. Since we started with the assumption dimv is even, one can conclude that the solution space of (dm 1 1 ) X = 0 is even-dimensional. This proves the claim.
TANGENT SPACES OF MULTIPLY SYMPLECTIC GRASSMANNIANS 5 Therefore, there exists 0 d K such that, 1 +d, vanishes on V E/V, where V V is some non-zero even-dimensional subspace of V. We have thus proved Theorem 1.1. [BF98] References A. Bertram and B.
