Problem 5.58: (a) It does not matter if the rotating object on figure 5.65 is a donut, or a ring, or any other kind of a toroid, as long as it s thin compared to its length l = 2πR, and both the charge and the mass are uniformly distributed along the length. For the rotation around the symmetry axis z as shown on the figure 5.65, the moment of inertial of the thin toroid is I = MR 2, (1) so its angular momentum is L = I ω = MR 2 ω (2) At the same time, rotating charged toroid carries electric current I = Q net rotating period = Q 2π/ω = Q ω 2π, (3) and this current loop encloses area A = πr 2, hence magnetic dipole moment m = IA = Qω 2π πr2 = 1 2 QR2 ω (4) Comparing formulae. For the electron in an atom, there are two sources of angular momentum the orbital angular momentum L = r m e v due to electron s motion around the atom s nucleus, and its spin S around its own center of mass. (13) The electron s spin S does not have a classical explanation, it is purely quantum in origin, and the spin s magnitude is completely fixed to the 1 2 of the unit of orbital angular 1 momentum, S = 2 h. Also, the spin does lead to a motion-independent magnetic moment of the electron, but the gyromagnetic ratio for the spin is twice as large as the classical ratio (5), m spin = 2 e 2m e S. I say magnitudes rather than magnitudes because in quantum mechanics the magnitude of a vector whose components cannot be measured at the same time is ill-defined. The precise statement about the orbital angular momentum operator ˆL is that its square ˆL 2 = ˆL 2 x+ ˆL 2 y + ˆL 2 z has discrete spectrum of allowed values of the form ˆL 2 = h 2 l(l+1) for integer l = 0,1,2,3,... (10) For the students who have not yet taken a quantum mechanics class, I an simplifying this quantum formula to magnitude L = h an integer. The naive classical explanation in terms of a finite-size electron spinning on its axis require rotation speeds much faster than the speed of light, so this cannot be right! 3

The best explanation for the gyromagnetic moment for the electron s spin comes from the quantum field theory, in particular from the Quantum ElectroDynamics (QED). It turns out that g spin naive (e/2m) = 2 (16) is only a leading approximation. The leading correction to this ratio was calculated in 1948 by Schwinger, Feynman, and Tomonaga, and by now the ratio (16) has been both calculated theoretically and measured experimentally to the incredible precision of 13 significant figures, g spin naive (e/2m) = 2.0023193043615(5). (17) Problem 6.8: Since the magnetization field M(r) is not uniform, the bound currents flow in the colume of the magentized cylinder as well as on its surface. In terms of the magnetic intensity field H, this means H 0 everywhere, which agrees with the absence of any free currents anywhere in the system. However, the absence of free currents does not guarantee that H 0. Indeed, any permanent magnet has only bound currents but no free currents anywhere, yet it does create both B 0 and H 0. In particular, outside the magnet itself, H = µ 1 0 B 0. 5

In general, in the absence of any free currents but in presence of magnetized materials, we have H = 0 but H 0. For example, see the magnetized ball example in my notes on magnetization and H field. To make the H field vanish just as it did in problem 6.8 we need symmetries which make both the magnetization M and the B field parallel to to the outer surface of the magnet. (Or to any other interface between different magnetic materials, if any.) Without such symmetries, we would have H 0 and hence B µ 0 M. Problem 6.10: As a warm-up exercise, consider the uniformly magnetized iron rod bendtinto a complete toroid, without the gap. Uniform magnetisation means no volume bound current, but there is a surface bound current of density K b = M n. For the original (un-bent) rod, the magnetization M was in the axis direction, hence the surface current K b of magnitude M in the circular direction ˆφ around the rod. For the rod bent into toroidal shape, the magnetization M points in the toroidal direction (blue arrow on the diagram below) while the surface current flows in the poloidal direction (red arrow): Such poloidal surface current is similar to the free current in the toroidal coil, so we get a 6

similar magnetic field: inside the toroid B = µ 0 n K = µ 0 M, (27) outside the toroid B = 0. (28) Now let s make a small gap in the iron toroid. The two sides of the gap are to the magnetization M in the iron, so the normal vectors to those sides are parallel to the M and hence M n = 0. Consequently, there are no bound surface currents along either side of the gap. On the other hand, the gap disturbs the poloidal bound current on the outer surface of the toroid: This current flows around the rod s perimeter along its whole length, except in the gap. Thus, we may view the gapped toroid as a superposition of a gapless iron toroid, and a narrow square around the gap which carries the counter-current K = K b in the opposite direction from bound current around the toroid. The net counter-current around the square loop is I counter = K b w = M w, (29) and the magnetic field of this counter-current inside the gap is of the order B[I counter ] µ 0I square a µ 0 M w a. (30) Note: this field is not uniform, but this is its typical magnitude (except very close to the outer surface of the gap), and in the w a limit this magnitude is negligible compared to the toroid s field B = µ 0 M. Problem 6.20: two solutions. Solution#1: Consider the textbook diagram 6.28 (page 290). To make a piece of un-magnetized iron into a permament magnet, you put it inside a solenoid, then apply a strong H field to bring the iron s magnetization to saturation point (b) on the diagram. Thanks to hysteresis, when you turn off the H field, the magnetization M is stuck at non-zero value called the permanent magnetization point (c) on the diagram. To de-magnetize the permament magent, you bring it back into the solenoid and slowly turn on the H field in the opposite direction to the magnetization M. Dn not make the H field too strong, just bring it to the point (d) on the diagram where the magnetization crosses zero. (The magnitude of H at points (d) and (g) is called the coercive force.) Once you get to the M = 0 point, you turn off the H field, and the magentization stays at zero value. Solution#2: The other way to de-magnetize a permanent magnet is to heat it up to a high temperature above the Curie point, and then slowly cool it down to the room temperature in the absence of external magnetic field. Indeed, above the Curie point, the ferromagnetic material the magnet in question is mage of becomes paramagnetic, so each ferromagnetic domain looses its spontaneous magnetization, and the whole domain structure disappears. When this material is later cooled down below the Curie point, the spontaneous magnetization at the sub-domain scale is restored, but the domain structure has to be rebuilt from scratch. The original domain structure (before heating the magnet) was biased in favor of domains magnetized in a particular direction, hence net overall magnetization of the permanent magnet. But the new domain structure arizing after cooling down below the Curie point has no memory of the original domains. Instead, it s built from scratch in the absence of an external field, hence no bias in favor of a perticular direction of magnetization. Consequently, we end up with no net magnetization at the long distance scale (i.e., distances much larger than the typical domain size). And that s how the permanent magnet becomes de-magnetized. 11
