On the Schrödinger Equation in under the Effect of a General Nonlinear Term A. AZZOLLINI & A. POMPONIO ABSTRACT. In this paper we prove the existence of a positive solution to the equation u + V(x)u = g(u) in, assuming the general hypotheses on the nonlinearity introduced by Berestycki and Lions. Moreover we show that a minimizing problem, related to the existence of a ground state, has no solution. 1. INTRODUCTION This paper deals with the following equation: (1.1) u + V(x)u = g(u), u>0. x, N 3; An existence result of nontrivial solutions for this kind of problem has been obtained by Rabinowitz [8] assuming that g is superlinear and subcritical at infinity and satisfies the global growth Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition t (1.) µ>suchthat0<µ g(s)ds g(t)t, for all t R. 0 This condition is used to get the boundedness of Palais-Smale sequences. In [7], L. Jeanjean and K. Tanaka have been able to remove the hypothesis (1.) by means of an abstract tool, consisting in a suitable approximating method (see [4, Theorem 1.1]). POMPONIO On the other hand, in the fundamental paper [], Berestycki and Lions proved the existence of a ground state, namely a solution which minimizes the action among all the solutions, for the problem u = g(u) in ; (1.3) u H 1 ( ), u 0, under the following assumptions on the nonlinearity g: (g1) g C(R,R), g odd; (g) < lim inf s 0 + g(s)/s lim sup s 0 + g(s)/s = m<0; (g3) < lim sup s + g(s)/s 1 0; (g4) there exists ζ>0 such that G(ζ) ζ g(s)ds >0; 0 here = N/(N ). So it seems that the natural assumptions on the nonlinearity do not require the superlinearity at infinity. In view of this result, the aim of this paper is to study the problem (1.1) preserving the same general assumptions of [] on g. Moreover we assume the following hypotheses on V : (V1) V C 1 (, R) and V(x) 0, for all x, and the inequality is strict somewhere; (V) ( V( ) ) + N/ < S; (V3) lim x V(x) = 0; (V4) V is radially symmetric; here ( V(x) x) + = max { ( V(x) x),0 } and S is the best Sobolev constant of the embedding D 1, ( ) L ( ), namely S = u inf u D 1, \{0} u. Our first main result is the following Theorem 1.1. Assume that (g1) (g4) and (V1) (V4) hold, then the problem (1.1) possesses at least a radially symmetric solution. Up to our knowledge, this is the first result on a problem as (1.1), where exactly the same general hypotheses of Berestycki and Lions [] are assumed on the nonlinearity g. As a consequence of Theorem 1.1, we can prove the following

Assuming that (g1) (g4) and (V1) (V4) hold, then the problem (1.1) possesses a radial ground state solution, namely a solution minimizing the action among all the nontrivial radial solutions. Remark 1.3. We can generalize the hypotheses (V1)and(V3), requiring: (V1) V C 1 (, R) and V(x) V 0 > m,forallx, and the inequality is strict somewhere; (V3) lim x V(x) = V 0 ; and supposing that the function g(s) = g(s) V 0 s satisfies (g1) (g4). Remark 1.4. The geometrical hypotheses on the potential V do not allow us to use concentration-compactness arguments as in [7]. As a consequence, we have to require a symmetry property on V to prevent any possible loss of mass at infinity. In the second part of the paper, we are interested in solving a minimization problem strictly related to the existence of a ground state solution for (1.1). Let I(u) = 1 u + V(x)u G(u), u H 1 ( ). When the nonlinearity g satisfies (1.), a standard method to look for the existence of a ground state solution for an equation as (1.1) is to study the minimizing problem (1.4) I(ū) = inf u N I(u), ū N, where N is the Nehari manifold related to I. In[8] the geometrical assumption on V (1.5) V(y) lim x V(x), for all y is used to solve such a minimizing problem. Moreover, in [7] it has been proved that, assuming (1.5), there exists a ground state solution for (1.1) also without the condition (1.). On the other hand, it is well known (see for example [1]) that if g satisfies (1.), and (1.5) holds with the reverse inequality, the minimizing problem (1.4) cannot be solved. In fact, a contradiction argument deriving from the comparison of the level η inf u N I(u) with η 0 inf u N0 I 0 (u) (here I 0 and N 0 are the functional and the Nehari manifold of the problem at infinity) is used and the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition plays a fundamental role. Actually, when we do not assume such a type of growth condition on g, these arguments do not work any more. However, a similar study can be done by replacing the Nehari manifold with a more suitable one. Indeed, if we define by { (1.6) P 0 u H 1 ( ) \{0} N } u = N G(u),

POMPONIO the Pohozaev manifold related to (1.3), and we set S 0 {u H 1 ( ) \{0} uis a solution of (1.3)}, it is well known that S 0 P 0.Moreover, in [9] it has been proved that P 0 is a natural constraint for the functional related to (1.3) I 0 (u) = 1 u G(u), u H 1 ( ). In order to look for a ground state solution, a very natural question arises: is the infimum I 0 P0 achieved? Following two different ways, Jeanjean and Tanaka [6] and Shatah [9] have given a positive answer to this question, showing that (1.7) min u S 0 I 0 (u) = min u P 0 I 0 (u). Inspired by these papers and observed that each solution of (1.1) satisfies the following Pohozaev identity: (1.8) N u + N V(x)u + 1 ( V(x) x)u = N G(u), we indicate with P the Pohozaev manifold related to (1.1): (1.9) P= {u H 1 ( )\{0} usatisfies (1.8) } and we wonder if there exists a minimizer for I P. Proceeding in analogy with [1], we get the following result Theorem 1.5. If we assume (g1) (g4), (V1), (V3) and (V5) ( V(x) x) 0, for all x ; (V6) NV(x) + ( V(x) x) 0 for all x, and the inequality is strict somewhere, then b inf u P I(u) is not a critical level for the functional I. Requiring something more, instead of (V6), we have a further information on the level b: Corollary 1.6. Assuming the same hypotheses of Theorem 1.5,ifin(V6) we have the strict inequality almost everywhere, then the level b is not achieved as a minimum on the Pohozaev manifold P. Acknowledgment.
