FRANCHI I. Issues for Great Britain Italy 00 90s? Type. Perf. /2. () maroon....00 () carmine....00 FRANCIS, DAY & HUNTER Great Britain Founded in 877 by William and James Francis and David Day (as W & J Francis and Day, then Francis Brothers & Day); Day had experience in music publishing and the Francis brothers needed a publisher for their songs. Harry Hunter joined in 880, and the present name was coined. Starting out in Oxford St, they moved to Charing Cross Rd in 897, becoming the first of the popular music publishers in what became London's 'Tin Pan Alley'. About 900 David Day formed the Musical Copyright Association and was at the forefront of the battle against the sheet music piracy rampant at the time. Offices were opened in New York (90), Paris (920) and Berlin (928). After World War I Francis, Day & Hunter became one of the most important publishers of educational, classical and popular music in Great Britain, a fact attested to by the abundance of their stamps. In 9, the firm bought out the catalogue of B. Feldman & Co, and in 972 became a subsidiary of EMI Music Publishing Ltd, but exist as a separate entity to the present day. Designs of Types & 2 have 7 latitude lines and show the West Indies. They differ from each other in the layout of the corner spray ornaments. Types & 4 (see below) have 9 latitude lines, omit the West Indies and in addition have LTD after the company s name. Where two colours are given, the first is the map colour. 00 92-. Type.
