Safety Tip Mountain flying 101 by Gary Pelach Flying in and around mountains can offer fantastic views, but it can be dangerous if you aren t familiar with flying at higher elevations. If you ve never flown in mountains, it s a good to take a mountain flying course that includes both ground training and flight training. Flight schools in highterrain areas usually offer hands-on training to help us flatlanders fly safely in the mountains. Not understanding the effects of high density altitude on aircraft performance is a major factor in mountain flying accidents. DENSITY ALTITUDE is the pressure altitude corrected for nonstandard temperature caused by increases in temperature, decreases in atmospheric pressure, and/or increased humidity. High density altitude makes the air thinner, leading to less lift and reduced thrust, which have negative effects on performance. The mountains generate unusual and unpredictable weather patterns, with conditions changing in a matter of minutes. Strong winds across mountain ranges can cause extreme turbulence and create dangerous mountain waves and microbursts. And at night, mountain valleys are often filled with thick fog that limits visibility. As you plan your flight, be sure to pay close attention to forecasts and contact local airports to get the most current conditions. If the forecast or preps leave any doubt, SIT it OUT...! Letter from EAA Air Academy Dear EAA Chapter 289, Inc. The EAA Air Academy celebrated its 35 th Anniversary this year and it is because of your support that we are able to provide an excellent aviation camp for young people. On behalf of the EAA Air Academy we would like to say thank you for helping young people from around the United States and the world attend EAA Air Academy 2018 camps. This summer 2018 over 275 young people were able to experience one of our EAA Air Academy camps. Your generosity is truly appreciated. We appreciate your involvement in the Young Eagles program as it helps young people experience the thrill of flight. Sincerely Experimental Aircraft Association, Inc. September 2018 Page 4
