Second Grade First Nine Week ELA Study Guide 2016 Second grade students will take their nine-week tests the week of October 17, 2016. For the ELA Test, students will read 3 passages (a fictional selection, a poem and a non-fiction selection) and answer questions based on the passages. In addition, they will be required to read a Table of Contents and answer comprehension questions. Many of the questions will include grammar, parts of speech and vowel questions. This study guide outlines the standards that will be on the first nine-week test. Examples of test questions are also included in this study guide. At the end of the study guide, you will find a practice passage. Phonological Awareness 2.FS.1- Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis in decoding words: a. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. b. Know spelling sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams. The words team and meat have the vowel team /ea/. What sound does the vowel team /ea/ make? Integration of Knowledge and Ideas 2.L.7- Use information gained from illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters setting or plot. Look at the picture. Who is the character from the story in this picture? Look at the picture. What season is it in the picture? What do you think the character will do next? Conventions of Standard English 2.LS.1-Demonstrate the command of conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Collective Noun- a word used to name a group of objects, animals or people n a unit. (ex. school of fish, army of soldiers, team of players, etc.) Common Noun- A person, place, thing, object or idea (ex. tent, girl, boy) Proper Noun- A specific person, place, thing, object or idea (ex. North Carolina, Mr. Lazar, etc.) Which word from the story is a collective noun? What part of speech is the word..? What is the plural form of the word? Production and Distribution of Writing 2.W.5- With guidance and support from peers focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. 2.LS.2- Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. a. Capitalize holidays, product names, and geography names. e. Consult reference materials, including beginning dictionaries, as needed to check and correct spelling. Students will have to write a describing paper. (ex. Describe your favorite sport. Describe your favorite animal.) Teachers will be looking for the following: Sentences must have 6 or more words. You must have 6 or more sentences.

Use capital letters. Use punctuation. Do not start a sentence with the words And or ME. Use descriptive words (adjectives) Make sure you reread your story to make sure it makes sense. PRACTICE PASSAGE Day and Night Every day the sun comes up. And every night the sun goes down. Why? The Sun The sun doesn t move around the Earth. The Earth spins as it goes around the sun. The part of the Earth facing the sun has day. The part of the Earth facing away from the sun has night. It takes 24 hours, or one day, to spin around once. The Moon Sometimes we see the moon at night. Sometimes we see it in the day, too. The moon is always in the sky. But the sun is so bright we usually can t see the moon during the day. The moon goes around the Earth. It takes the moon 27.3 days to go around the Earth one time. Seasons The Earth is just not spinning. It is also following a path around the sun. This path is called an orbit. It takes the Earth one year to go all the way around the sun. During that time it has different seasons. The seasons are based on where the Earth is on its path around the sun. 1. What text features are used in the passage Seasons?
