Second Grade First Nine Week ELA Study Guide 2016 Second grade students will take their nine-week tests the week of October 17, 2016. For the ELA Test, students will read 3 passages (a fictional selection, a poem and a non-fiction selection) and answer questions based on the passages. In addition, they will be required to read a Table of Contents and answer comprehension questions. Many of the questions will include grammar, parts of speech and vowel questions. This study guide outlines the standards that will be on the first nine-week test. Examples of test questions are also included in this study guide. At the end of the study guide, you will find a practice passage. Phonological Awareness 2.FS.1- Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis in decoding words: a. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. b. Know spelling sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams. Conventions of Standard English 2.LS.1-Demonstrate the command of conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Collective Noun- a word used to name a group of objects, animals or people n a unit. (ex. school of fish, army of soldiers, team of players, etc.) Common Noun- A person, place, thing, object or idea (ex. tent, girl, boy) Proper Noun- A specific person, place, thing, object or idea (ex. Production and Distribution of Writing 2.W.5- With guidance and support from peers focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. 2.LS.2- Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. a. Capitalize holidays, product names, and geography names. e. Consult reference materials, including beginning dictionaries, as needed to check and correct spelling. Students will have to write a describing paper. (ex. Describe your favorite sport. Describe your favorite animal.) Teachers will be looking for the following: Sentences must have 6 or more words. You must have 6 or more sentences.
Use capital letters. Use punctuation. Do not start a sentence with the words And or ME. Use descriptive words (adjectives) Make sure you reread your story to make sure it makes sense.
