Learner Profile Thinkers Friday, October 16 AGENDA 5 min Enter the classroom silently and find your seat. 1. Take out pencils, HAWK card, agenda, and elements notes (drawings of ice cream) 2. Everything else gets put by the back wall 3. Write down homework (Finish packet) in your agenda. 4. Pass your agendas to the front 5. Do Now 6. Wait silently for instructions DO NOW: Four Square Questions Objective(s): 1. SWBAT identify that a substance is a compound by its chemical formula, absence on the Periodic Table, and that it contains two or more types of atoms.

Statement of Inquiry/IB Trait STATEMENT OF INQUIRY: Everything in the universe, including us, is made of matter and elements are the building blocks of all matter. Discovering elements has helped scientists identify the things that everything in our universe has in common and the relationships we share. Discovering the benefits and harms of certain elements and compounds has helped us understand our universe and the way in which it works. IB TRAIT: INQUIRERS

Elements vs. Compounds I. Do Now II. Quiz III. Video IV. Elements vs. Compounds V. Chemical Formulas VI. Guided Practice VII. Independent Practice VIII. Exit Ticket IX. Closing and Questions You re here, you take up space, you matter. It s just Science, man! Kid President

Turn and Talk How would an individual identify an element?

Elements An element is a pure substance that contains only one type of atom. Elements are found on the Periodic Table of Elements. Elements are represented by chemical symbols. The first letter is always uppercase and if there is a second letter, it is always lowercase. A pure substance that contains only one type of atom. Found on the periodic table, represented by chemical symbols ELEMENT Hydrogen H, Oxygen O Water H 2 O, Salt NaCl

Compounds A compound is a substance that contains two or more types of atoms/elements. Compounds are not found on the Periodic Table of Elements. Compounds are represented by a chemical formula. The formula acts as a recipe for the compound. A substance that contains two or more types of atoms. Not found on the periodic table, represented by a chemical formula COMPOUND Water H 2 O, Salt NaCl, Carbon Dioxide CO 2 Hydrogen H, Oxygen O, Carbon - C

Compounds Compounds are not found on the periodic table of elements. If you cannot find a substance on the Periodic Table, it is not an element. For example Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is very common gas found in the air around us. But, it is a compound made up of carbon and oxygen. Carbon dioxide is not on the Periodic Table.

Stop and Jot What is the difference between an element and a compound?

Elements vs. Compounds I. Do Now II. Quiz III. Video IV. Elements vs. Compounds V. Chemical Formulas VI. Guided Practice VII. Independent Practice VIII. Exit Ticket IX. Closing and Questions You re here, you take up space, you matter. It s just Science, man! Kid President

Chemical Formulas Compounds are represented by chemical formulas. Each capital letter represents one element. Subscripts represent the number of atoms of each element.

Chemical Formulas {Examples} H 2 O Number of elements: 2 Hydrogen and Oxygen Number of atoms for each element: 2 of Hydrogen, 1 of Oxygen

Chemical Formulas {Examples} Si 3 N 4 Number of elements: 2 Silicon and Nitrogen Number of atoms for each element: 3 of Silicon and 4 of Nitrogen

Practice Use your own Periodic Table of Elements to answer the questions in your guided notes. How many elements are in the compound H 3 PO 4? How many atoms of each element is present in the compound, HNO 3? How many elements are in the compound C 2 H 5 OH? How many atoms of each element is present in the compound, C 2 H 4 O 2?

Three ways to identify a compound 1. Made of more than one type of atom or element. 2. Not located on the Periodic Table of Elements. 3. Represented by a chemical formula.

Turn and Talk How would an individual identify a compound?
